At Bungie, we consider ourselves lucky. Every day, we get to do what we love in an amazing place, alongside people we respect and admire. No one embodies that more than Joseph Staten. Few have contributed as much to our success. To that end, it is with no small degree of sadness that we say “Godspeed” to more than just a Grizzled Ancient, but an old, dear friend. And it is with no small degree of delight and intrigue that we imagine what worlds he might take us to next.
Here are a few words from the man himself.

Dear community friends,

After fifteen great years at Bungie, from the battlefields of Myth to the mysteries of Halo and beyond, I'm leaving to tackle new creative challenges. While this may come as a surprise, fear not. It's been my pleasure building Destiny these past four years, and after the big reveal this Summer, our hugely talented team is on track for greatness. I'll be cheering all of them, with all of you, when the game launches next year. Thank you for your support of me, and your continued support of Bungie. We couldn't have done it without you.
Per Audacia Ad Astra!
Joseph Staten
It’s been an honor serving with you, Joseph. Thank you for everything.

He said "tackle new creative challenges". I don't think churning out Halo games for Microsoft fits that bill.
Sure it does. How can he make a ton of money off a enduring franchise and mange to not get called a "sell out" or "creatively bankrupt money grubber" by ten year old tweeters.

Damn I thought he would stick with Bungie forever :meh:

Someone definitely is after his writing talent.

I keep reading joseph stalen haha.yes i know it's stalin.

Hopefully this doesn't do anything to negatively affect Destiny. It's one of my most wanted games.

I never thought he was that creative, so it would be funny if Activision hired him aboard to write the next eight Call of Duty games.

Staten's former role at Bungie was director of cinematics and was responsible for the in-game movies for Bungie's Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo 3. Work on the games at "crunch time" involved 80 hour weeks and stretches without sleep maxing out at 72 hours.

I can see why he left.

I always considered Staten kinda the heart of Bungie. I'm not as huge a Bungie follower as I used to be (Destiny sounds awesome but will have to prove itself first) but man this news really sucks. :/

So he "directed" their cinematics?

I always thought Halo's weren't very good anyways. I know they are well loved, but I loved me some Halo for the tight gameplay / great level design not the cinema.

He was also lead writer, and authored 1 (maybe 2?) of the Halo novels. The storyline/canon/whatever was his baby

Oh, and he was the voice of the grunts in the first 5 halo games

That's what I was thinking too.

Halo's cinemas were much better after 343i took over.

That's cool.. also was never big on the story is what I meant.

It was well liked so I know my opinion certainly isn't the consensus, but I always found it to be.. overrated for lack of a better word.

Fair enough, people like different things :). I perhaps misread what your comment meant, thought you were asking what his relevance to halo was lol
