Good to know, they need everything they can get.

平井CEO「PS4はすでにハードウェア単体で利益を計上しており、従来のプラットフォームビジネスとは異なる事業体制となっている」

Google translate:

"PS4 has recorded a gain in hardware alone already has a business structure that is different from the traditional business platform" Hirai CEO

Is Kaz Hirai saying that PS4 hardware is profitable already?

Not surprising. That was the whole point of the more conventional hardware and lack of power. Sony had no real choice though;finacial woes dictated such actions

Unfortunately I have nothing witty to say. So I guess I'll simply say...cool.

Oh wait, also please get rid of TV Kaz. It's not ever going to work for you guys, stop trying.

Good. I like the 3 console manufacture approach we've been in for a while and hope all 3 can maintain profitability.

I used to LOVE SONY televisions and still regard them as quality products, but that price point became too much.

Thats awesome, hopefully they make a few lakes full of cash to make the ps5 a little beefier.

This makes me wish the hardware was a bit more powerful. To have room to spare with production costs like this, they definitely could have.

lets hope this continues and the price drops quickly over the next 2yrs. We may be able to get new gen consoles around the 5yr mark. if they all keep with same partners so we have full B/C.

They're never going back to loss leader model, you guys should make peace with that.

well what's funny is at the time PS3 was more then PS4 and 360 that was cheaper run games better so just cause something cost more does not mean it will perform as well as something cheaper.

I've parsed this post three times and I'm still not sure what you said. But I agree I think. :3

This is a more accurate translation:
Hirai CEO PS4 has already posted profits in the hardware division, because the business model differs from the conventional electronic device business. Such as simply selling a television. When you sell a game console you're selling the ecosystem that goes with it, Sony's is vibrant, healthy and profitable. They're doing good.

I think he's say that the PS3 was more expensive than the 360 and the PS4, and that the cheaper 360 ran games better than the more expensive PS3. Sometimes the more expensive product is not the better/more powerful.

My interpretation/translation of logic flow here:

When they launched, PS3 cost more than Xbox 360.
Xbox 360's rendering performance was superior to PS3's.
Therefore, a higher cost doesn't necessarily mean better performance.

That said, I'm not sure it's relevant to Ketto's statement... and there seems to be some underlining implication that I'm missing, and perhaps that's what would make it relevant?

In any case, from all I can deduce - I agree as well. :-)

...and to Ketto's point, he's absolutely right. The loss-leader model just isn't likely to ever come back. It really sucks to dig a deep financial hole just by 'succeeding' (i.e. selling a bunch of units), and in the event that you 'fail' (i.e. sell far fewer than you manufacture), then your losses are even more paramount. Yeah, it's just not worth it. As a console maker, you've really got to be profitable on day one (or close to it) on the hardware alone, otherwise win or lose - you're losing - and it's too risky to take that approach these days.

Sony can't seems to do any wrong current gen.

A good E3 showing, & my money is yours.

I do not know where to put this, but Jesus, PS4 is still selling out at gamestop & Mediamarkt at my area.

yes and thats why they are such underpowered piece of hardwares (X1 included just so people dont jump on me)

That's good for Sony. Hope they make enough to keep up with everything.
