You are not replacing anything in the PS5 that's an expansion bay, the actual internal SSD is soldered to the motherboard I don't know where you guys are getting the idea that you are replacing it lol and there are a few already listed that have heat sink which does fit, again I don't know where you read they don't but several do fit with the heat sink.

Xbox's expansion solution is more convenient for sure but if you want more than 1TB you'll have to swap cards from the back, you can put an internal 2TB in the PS5 that costs under $500 right now (on sale). The ones Cerny is putting in his has the 2TB on sale for under $500 with the heat sink. Once you have that in you'll have 2TB of extra storage and not need to worry about swapping anything as long as you can afford it. Either way the only truly inconvenient thing about expanding either is the price of these things, it's not hard to use a screw driver, you aren't even opening the main part of the console it's just a small expansion bay on the bottom.
Replacing the extra internal SSD (the one you need to install). I know the internal SSD (that came with the PS5) is soldered on the PCB.

You need to replacing when your 1 or 2T SSD (that you installed) ran out of room.

For XBox you just swap card (5 sec). You buy 3 1T cards, you get 3T storage. For PS5, you buy 1T storage, then you buy another 2T SSD, you get only 2T, The internal extra SSD slot is not design to be swappable.

Just think of it like the XBOX external card is USB sticks, while the internal SSD card is like a harddisk.

No you don't. You buy 3 1 TB cards you get 1 TB of storage. You can only use 1 at a time. The PS5 solution is no different other than it takes 20 seconds to swap.

Oh ok I got ya I misunderstood what you were saying. How much money do you think people are going to spend on expanding storage? The sale price for a compatible 2TB WD SSD with heat sink is $449.00 right now, that's $120 off the normal price. I highly doubt people are going to start spending several hundred dollars to expand even more, at some point they'll have to start deleting games or using cheaper external storage and swapping them in and out.

Each 1TB card for the Series X costs $219, at most I see people buying 2 of those over time, maybe they'll start selling larger ones but either way I don't see many people willing to spend over $500 for expanding storage on either platform. You can install a 2TB upgrade on the PS5 which I've seen done in videos in less than 2 minutes and be done with it or buy 2 cards for the Series X and swap them back and forth which will be less convenient long term but again complaining about either solution as being difficult is just being lazy. I can see someone being intimidated when they hear about how you do it on PS5 but once you see the video you'll realize it's just as easy as replacing the batteries in a kids toy that requires a screw driver.

A video I saw brought up a good point, these drives you'll be putting in the PS5 generally have 5 year warranties, the one for the Series X only has a 2 year warranty so that's something that people should consider as well. MS says they'll have other options from other manufacturers as time goes on, I don't know how many 3rd parties are going to want to make proprietary drives for the Series family of consoles but we'll see.

It will take far moer than 20sec. 2 mins if I am generous. It inconvience.

Of course you can use 1 T at a time, but you can has as much storage as you have cards to storage your game since swapping card takes 5 sec. People in general do not swap SSD cards on PC (they install one or replace one), & people will not swap SSD on PS5 due to the inconvience.

Keep in mind that soon you will be able to use any storage card for Xbox as the current one was a years deal.

After that it will still simply be a case of plugging it in.
They are proprietary aren't they? how many companies are going to want to bother making them when they only work with one product?

You can have up to 4TB installed in the PS5 and not worry about a thing other than that initial 2 minute installation. You also don't have to worry about losing or damaging a card or remembering which games are on which card etc. I really don't think people will buy more than 1 of those cards anyway for the most part, it's awesome that we have SSD's in these new consoles but cost is still a big issue no matter which way you go.

What are you smoking? The PS5 case is like a PC case. You just push it off. That takes like 2 seconds. Undo a screw is a few seconds. Insert SSD a few seconds. it doesn't take minutes at all.

Off the power
remove the cables
Move PS5 to a table,
pick a screw driver
open the case
unscrew the SSD take it out
replace an SSD & screw it
Snap case back
Put the PS5 to TV stand
insert cable
on the power

I am confidence my 2 mins estimation is accurate than your 20 sec. I am taking about typical real world dissembly/assembly time, not speed run time.

From what MS said after the first year any SSD will be acceptable and I dare say a connector will come out that let's you have multiple connected to the console at once.

PS5 (and earlier ps gen) has the worse solution, how is this even debatable lol
Worst, sure. But bad, nope. and worst depends how you look at it. Sure, the Xbox way is simpler, but the PS5 has more options.

From twitter it seems its the removing of the PS5 panel that causes the main problem as many scratch it when removing.

I wouldn't count on that but we'll see.

If you aren't careful it can, at the same time you'll never see the scratch once the cover is back on.

I assume that "any" part is limited to the same or greater speed as the internal one

Worst, sure.

If it’s like the PS3 and PS4, you have to format each time you replace it back and forth. That wipes out any games you have on it each time you swap them around. So add downloading all your games again to it each time.

Someone wake me up when the topic gets to how many jigglyflops are in the screwdrivers needed to install the SSDs so I can look for another poop gif.

Yeah, that wouldn't be good.

We tried some below-spec Gen4 M.2 drives as well and saw up to 15% slower loading in the most SSD-stressing areas of the game. Not too shabby, but keep a close eye on technical specs if you’re making an SSD purchase, as our game does rely on high-quality storage.

How do you even scratch it when all you are doing is pushing down on the panel with your hands? What is Twitter going to say next, don't know how to use nail trimmers? 🤦‍♂️

A Reddit user also gave us similar results where transferring a game to a Samsung 980 Pro was faster than doing it the other way around.

This suggests the Samsung 980 Pro's write speeds are faster than the internal SSD. This should not be much of a surprise as they are rated up to 7gb/s and 5.1gb/s read and write speeds respectively. So these would be higher specs than the internal one used in the PS5. Following the same scale, the internal SSD spec could be somewhere around 5.5gb/s and 3.6gb/s read and write speeds.

This brings us to another point where the SSDs you are buying to expand the PS5 storage could actually be faster SSD's than the internal one whereas the XS storage are slower than its internal counterpart. Meaning you will get at least the same performance in the PS5 whereas the XS is not quite as fast as the internal SSD.
