Travel industries definitely got hit the worse from COVID. Hotels, cruises, airlines etc.

Hope you guys recover.

But back on topic, there are thousands of game studios that are hit by COVID around the world, 343 Industries started development around what, 2015 or earlier?

On top of that, they are heavily supported by MS and have like 750+ employees, double, triple, even up to 7x more employees than other game studios (didn't the Medium have only 100 employees or something?). You really giving them a pass?
Yup. I give them a pass any day of the week. Year. Decade.

Just like God of War 2 delayed due to Covid as well. It’s a pandemic.

God of War came out in mid 2018.

They probably started production for the sequel soon after that. So closing in on almost 3 years now development time wise.

343 Industries has like a 3 years headstart on them so double the time.

Communication alone is one way. Far easy to communicate with 100 people than 700 people.

There are pros and cons.

Efficient communication in the studio would be down to management and project leaders IMO. If they allocate their resources well enough, then the developmental load would be much lighter on the company as a whole since they can have more people working on multiple aspects of the game and speed things up.

Halo would have released if the reaction to it wasn't so bad

No way on that. They didn't even talk about anything multiplayer. Not even any info at all. That game was never going to come out. Clearly someone made the (bad) decision to push out something to help hype the XSX. It wouldn't have taken them a year to simply improve the graphics.

A game a few months from launch with zero multiplayer info should have been obvious. This year they are rumored to launch a beta soon. That's a game that is actually coming out.

Not a chance. They weren’t happy where they were when they did the demo. They were still in alpha and multiplayer wasn’t even a thing.

Santa Monica =\= 343. Different games, different teams. 343 is working on a large campaign, an eSport multiplayer, and a forge creation tool.

They already told us Covid affected the release. Santa Monica told us Covid affected the release.

They would have announced it as a 2021 game right there

My parents wanted to push me into engineering. I got one look at some of the crazy stuff and realized it was too much for me. I worked my way through the basic Calc I had to do and that was it. I know people in that field too and it is nuts. The big thing is though, get yourself an engineering degree from a decent school, and jobs will be calling you up asking if you have time for them to sit down and maybe offer you a job.

IT is easy. Google + copy/paste from Stack Overflow. Nobody has written one new line of code since 2014! ;)

Lol. In my college Java 2 class we had to code Minesweeper from scratch..everyone googled the Minesweeper code from Stack Overflow.

Actually benefits PS/PC gamers more with this strategy since you can experience both worlds' console exclusives on launch date which is a win/win in my book.

...yes but at inferior settings on PC. The vast majority of PC gamers don't have hardware better than an XSX and most still game at 1080p.

Santa Monica also has 1/3 the manpower that 343 Industries does and 1/2 the amount of development time.

The PC will have inferior settings to the XSX? I doubt it. There will be scales for the power difference between the low PC and high end PCs. Look at Cyberpunk 2077 on a 3090 vs an Xbox One.

There was talk of the game being released in sections, and the fact that the MP is free to play means it's two different packages anyway so the MP could have been delayed and the single player portion released at launch had the pushback from fans not been so strong.

What I'm saying is that the XSX GPU = ~ 2080SUPER.

According to the recent Steam survey....most PC gamers have a GPU that isn't even close to that powerful. Hence MOST PC gamers CAN play XSX games, but MOST will be playing at LOWER settings so the VISUAL experience will be inferior.

While that is true, like you said most PC gamers are still playing at 1080p so that may explain why the 1060-1080's are still so popular. They would still be able to play at medium to high settings at that resolution comparable to the XSX. The only thing missing may probably be raytracing.

The PC community is also a community with different expectations. Most PC gamers would also probably favour higher framerate than settings in their games since they love their MP games. Those PC gamers who like visual fidelity probably already own higher end specs like the 2 and 3 series.

Don't forget we are also at the beginning of the gen where the consoles are considered the high end specs, as we move through the gen, I don't doubt we will have mid gen refreshes again and by that time there'd probably be the RTX 4 and 5 series/ AMD's equivalents that would be much more powerful than what's powering the XSX and PS5 now.

Is it still the 6GB Geforce 1060? Most PC gamers play at 1080P, so the Series S is likely a better benchmark.

I play PC games at 4K, 60 (never above 60 fps due to my monitor being 60hz), just to put this info out. ;)

For sure most gaming PC are less powerful than next gen console, but within a few years, this will change.

I am happy for consoles fans that this time, Next gen consoles are not gimp like last where they (particularly G xbox 1) were underwhelm compare to gaming PC then when they were launch.

I am sure covid has impact, but game development is one of the LEAST affected (in fact it positive as more people buy games in lockdown) industry from covid, in terms of job lost & schedule effects.

I work in the automotive industry & much more impact by covid, but there is literally NO chmage in schedule due to covid. We just adjust how we work.

Every company and every industry was affected differently. What we do know is that both 343 and Santa Monica publicly stated they were delaying their games due to Covid.

So clearly it affects developers in a negative way.

Game devs is all about productivity interruption. From an economic and job safty view point they were fine. So, yeah, in the big picture I agree with starseeker.

Yes, but I doubt its significant (like a year delay signifcant), or their companies are poorly run.

No way you can convince me that Automotove can producet phyical cars, that required phyical people assemblying cars & components in factories, phyical parts that produce those components, R & D & testing of Phyiscal parts that required on site can do MUCH better on schedule than game developments that can easily do 90% of tasks from home with a VPN connection to company database.

I’m gonna go with what Sony and MS told us.

I doubt Santa Monica and 343 lied. Covid hit our corporate massively and we have 10s of thousands of employees.

Then they are poorly run then.
