Like a Dragon: Ishin - Feb 21st 2023

I've been playing this over the weekend and I really like it. I didn't know this had any connection to the Yakuza series until I started looking into this game. So, this is my first in the series although I've read that these main characters do resemble their counterparts from previous games but the tone of Ishin is a little more serious. But I've already had some hilarious moments happen so its not all serious.

Anyway, I was drawn to this title because its a period Samurai game and we don't get enough of those. There are some dated mechanics in this remake/remaster of a game like short loading screens when entering buildings, or text dialog for all the secondary characters and the camera can be a little wonky sometimes. But this game shines in its combat, there are 4 styles that you can switch between at any time. Brawler, Gunner, Swordsman and Wild Dancer which combines swordplay with firearms and its my favorite style to use. However, Swordsman is really useful in one on one duels like boss battles. Speaking of Boss Battles the few I've encountered have been awesome, filled with funny banter and over the top cinematic moves.

I'm only about 5hrs into this game and I have a few awesome looking moves already and there's an extensive skill tree for all 4 styles of combat. And the great thing is, all you need to do to get upgrade points for a certain style is by using it. This is a revenge story and while its not deep there are a lot of other things going on that make things interesting.

Pretty good reviews so far

No surprise, big upgrade on the original cut scenes but dated in the environment.

All versions have some FPS issues that need fixing.
