Major Nelson speaks about Native 1080p 60fps...

Devs are just CHOOSING to make their games 720p on the xb1 because it's cooler. Open your eyes guys! 1080p is just a fad.

I take it as devs are choosing 720p because they don't have a full understanding of the hardware yet. So like he says it is a developers decision.

I am sure both COD and BF can do 1080p, but there would be problems in other areas of the game.

Like I said earlier. If this continues next year then we have a problem.

Because not forcing resolutions is insulting?

Perhaps that is a question for the devs, as they are the ones who made the call...I don't think MS called them up and said hey...only do 720p...it'll get people in a right tizzy.

No, but once they found out that it was and that their competitor's version was 1080p, why did they let it stand? And after reaping the benefits of having an easy to develop for machine last generation, why did they deviate this coming generation? That is the mind boggling thing here.

Does kind of remind me of what was going on with the PS3 vs 360 in multiplatform games. In fact...I think it was a COD game that ran at a higher res on the 360 as opposed to the PS3.
Not that the PS3 couldn't do it. Just that the devs couldn't utilize all of its strengths and didn't take the time to...yet we had games like Uncharted that ran at higher resolutions and looked better to boot. Seems roles are reversed and Sony fans have taken up the jeering.

Sounds like exactly what is going on here. The problem is 1 part Microsoft tools, 1 part dev familiarity with the Xb1, 1 part launch timeframe.
Seriously....when you think about it that way it makes sense.

I don't know how anybody can say it is a hardware limitation when we have games on the Xb1 that are at a higher res and look better.

Major Nelson is right....no matter how poorly worded it is. Devs have the choice. Just this time....they didn't have the time to work it all out. Fits right in place with folks saying that the Xb1 dev tools were BEHIND Sony's.

Well....part of the answer is that Microsoft said early on that they were not going to mandate the resolutions to devs. They did with the 360 and it backfired. I'm fairly sure in saying that they wanted devs to make their own games at their own pace and make it look the best in whatever res they could do. The problem arises when you add in that esram and up the complexity of your console.

+1 to this and your previous post. That is what I'm understanding from all of this. PS4 is built more like a PC, and easier to develop for, for now. It will also hit it's development peak sooner. The question is how long it will take devs to take full advantage of X1, and how high its potential really goes.

Personally I'm still betting on MS, although I can't wait to see how the next TLOU and GOW look. Hopefully by that point the PS4 has dropped in price.

It just makes sense man.
I think it is funny that a couple of weeks before all of this resolution talk came about we had multiple reports from devs and 'insiders' saying that the dev tools for the PS4 were more 'mature' than the XB1's.
All of a sudden we have some hard evidence to support this claim with 3rd party launch game resolutions being all over the place, and the jeering turns to...'LULzz....teh XBONE isn't powerful enough'

People just don't use common sense anymore.
Also...just look at COD:G. o_O
Is someone going to honestly tell me that Ryse & Forza that run at higher res and look better are less demanding than COD:G????

Its the dev tools/launch time plain and simple. Sony went with the most PC like design of the two. Nobody wants to admit it but it is a fact. Microsoft opted for a more mysterious design, albeit more complex...and it shows. I expect this resolution disparity to vanish fairly soon.

MS is absolutely taking it on the chin and this is their best defense? I'm glad I'll only be out a few bucks on my preorder and not the whole $500. I think I'll just wait and make my decision around the time Destiny launches.

listen this is not MS fault this is the developer to choice to make it a 60fps with 1080p MS have nothing to do with it

Still though, you cant help but wonder why so many fail to see this . Whether your playing on the XO or the Ps4 the game is going to look great. I've watched comparisons a couple of times and I can assure you, no one on either side is going to complain. People are making this out to be a HUGE graphical downgrade; as if the XO version of BF4 and CoD will look more like the 360 version compared to the Ps4. This isnt like that at all. Its a few pixels......thats it.

I'm starting to really dislike this guy.. he said he can't wait for truth to be revealed about xbox vs ps4 regarding the 50% power difference... well it's already showing.. COD 720p BF4 720p, Ki 720p and Assasins creed and NFS might be next..this guy has no shame.

Mcmasters,

You realize that resolution just as bit depth scales linearly with power? It has always been that way. People are making a big deal about it because it is. Double the pixels requires double the FLOPs. Have you not gamed on a PC? It takes a massive upgrade to your GPU in order to double the resolution. If the PS4 wanted with COD it could halve the resolution to the X1's 720P and do it using literally half of its power--that is how resolution works. THAT is why people are making a big deal out of this.

If you are happy with weaker hardware so be it. The games will look great and be really fun. But I don't see why you would even want to get involved in "console warz" and "comparisons" with weaker hardware. It's a game you will never win. Oh I know Ryse looks great at 900P/30fps but we don't have a Ryse on PS4 to compare to. If they are as good as a developer as DICE, one of the most respected out there, it would be a higher resolution and higher frame rate on PS4 just like their game is (and probably have better particle effects and lighting according to Jack Frags who has played BF4 on both). Unless you think DICE is a lazy dev? Or the world's largest software development company has worse software development tools? Is this where we've come to with excuses?

How about you just face facts and accept the reality that the specs are actually real. Let's stop this silly madness I've been hearing all spring, summer and into fall that a Radeon 7790 with DDR3 memory is somehow going to match a 7870 with GDDR5. Stop lying to yourself. Accept the great games and great exclusives and move on.

I find it humorous that when people say things like 'but Microsoft is a software company how could they have worse tools?'

I don't know if this is a lapse of judgement or just ignoring some other useful facts. Such as:
Sony has always been a hardware company...yet look at how terrible the PS2 & PS3 were to develop for. Only now are they getting it right with their hardware design.

Some people just want to give Sony the crown in every argument.
Hilarious.

Mcmasters,
Play the Xb1. Enjoy it. Know that it is powerful, and that someone on a gaming forum telling you to 'accept reality' doesn't negate your personal opinion.

Let get this out of the way here: I dont game on PC. Not a fan. Never have been. I exclusively game on my wide screen television. Mmk? Mmk!

So for the 15,999,999.00 time, its been said the Resolution choice was left up to the devs. IT IS IN NO WAY INDICATION OF POWER PERFORMANCE! Do you need me to spell this out in crayon for you Yoyo? You can't claim victory over friggin pixel counts mate. To even attempt to do so is desperate. Because a game has a higher resolution does not equal a better game. These small, insignificant little arguments over resolution is a strawman argument. I get it. Your HOPING the XO shows to be the weaker console, but its not. Its appears to be weaker, but how did the weaker console still hold its own against the allegedly more powerful PS4 (not to mention looking better overall in my opinion) Granted, the PS4 is powerful. But isn't it boggling how the supposed less remarkable XO still holds its own? You tout your crap like that's the way its supposed to be because specs are specs and you can't argue with those. But again, how is the XO version still holding its own?

How many games do we know of that are 1080p @60 fps on the X1? I can name one or two off the top of my head. Still think its weaker, Yoyo? Forza 5 shoots your entire argument full of holes, and so does NBA 2K. Your trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. And the hole "RYSE would look better on the PS4 argument is moot. I'm not indulging in the "what if's" here. Fact of the matter is, RYSE is XO exclusive and looks amazing.

I agree that the games will be great and a lot of fun to play. But the pixel counting is ridiculous mate. I dont agree. Again, if 720 was the universal resolution for the XO, then yes I'd agree. The hard facts are however, its not. End of story.

I'm COMPLETELY COMFORTABLE with my first console choice. Always have been. But its the miniscule arguments over trivial things that inevitably get blown up into digital genocide that becomes hard to stomach. Never have been a fan of petty things... Ever.

I dont know why people feel the need to argue with whether or not its weaker. Of course it is but that doesnt mean you have to cancel your preorder.

I don't think any body is denying this. No.
The point of contention has always been...'how much weaker?'

We have heard from industry vets/developers that both consoles are pretty much equal in capabilities. Both have pros & cons.

Then we hear from 'armchair' engineers that it is a '50%' difference

...then yet again we hear it is more '30%'

Who to believe.

The Xbox One has weaker specs. So far it's showing to be a hindrance to third party developers and it's showing in the numbers. Visually remains to be seen. Will third party developers get more comfortable with the console like first part developers are doing, I hope so. Will this change anything about my next-gen plans, absolutely not. I sit 4ft away from my 52" so I would see some difference. Everything the Xbox One will do far outweigh what I hope is just growing pains.

As I typed this CoD: Ghosts commercial just came on during the Bulls game. Man, I can't wait for that game!

I understand your point, however I did not wait for years and years for the next gen to finally arrive, searching and reading any scrap of info that I could find, scouring TXB daily for rumors and news, dreaming of the killer new graphics, to finally get to play a new game on a $500 console at less than half the resolution that should be STANDARD at this point. It's ridiculous!

And I think that is a fair reason to not buy the Xbox One or at least not yet. I think they dropped the ball on this but there are plenty of reason to still get it. Its just a question of how comfortable you are with lesser multiplatform games.

Are you angry with both the PS4 & Xb1 then?
Neither have all announced games at 1080p standard.

I'm mainly angry with MS because they are making me consider a PS4!

I'm certainly not thrilled with Sony at all. My first HD TV was a Sony. It cost me $2400 dollars and that was a boat load of money for me at the time. The screen turned blue after the warranty ran out (I think in had an extended warranty from BB) $2400 for a TV that lasted 4 years . . . I surely don't want to turn around and hand them more cash!

Maybe some gamers are expecting a bit too much for next gen. o_O Eh?

Next generation is showing HUGE potential. But maybe some are right: if resolutions matter all that much, get a PC.

More like they just like to use fud to advance their own ideas, however wrong or misinformed they are.

Hoping for 1080p, the standard res of most TVs nowadays, is expecting too much? No. Hoping for an Xbox One game to match the res of the PS4 version, that apparently is expecting too much.

I think everybody knows that most developers are going to stick to 720p/30FPS outside of a few key titles. Of course Xbox One can do higher, but developers usually use 720p/30FPS in their titles because they can make their games look better in other ways by turning other effects on that wouldn't let the game run well at 1080p/60FPS. Developers usually don't care about the higher res/framerate because the trade off for having to increase the resolution/framerate means the game may look worse to the average consumer. They usually go the 'eye candy' route, people are more interested in things that look more realistic usually when announcing a new game...it sparks a buzz.
