Microsoft opens up Xbox Music catalogue to developers
http://www.xboxmad.net/x/index.php?page=news

The developer preview of Windows Phone 8.1 did away with the integrated Xbox Music hub, and was replaced with a crippled mess that drew the ire of Windows Phone users everywhere. Whilst it has enjoyed fortnightly updates, it still leaves a lot to be desired compared to offerings by Spotify and other services.

Xbox Music has now opened up its entire catalogue to developers via the Xbox Music API. Developers will be able to pull 30 second preview clips and meta data like album art, artist info etc., directly into their apps, as well as grant users full access via the Xbox Music subscription.

Devs will also be able to earn a commission from Microsoft for any songs or subscriptions purchased via their apps.

There doesn't appear to be any restrictions in particular with regards to what type of app you could tap in to the Xbox Music catalogue for, in theory you stream the the music to enhance games and other things.

It's free to apply for an API key, so devs please, start making an Xbox Music app that won't make me want to insert my Lumia forcibly into my eye socket.
