Microsoft has formally denied it will deactivate its Games for Windows Live service for PC at the beginning of July, as had been rumored since August of last year and anticipated as developers - including a studio owned by Microsoft - stopped using it.
In a statement to Game Informer, Microsoft said "We are continuing to support the Games for Widows Live service," and "We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future."

Back in March, Phil Spencer the head of Microsoft's Xbox division, said Microsoft was working toward "a renewed focus on Windows and PC gaming." However, he indicated that the company wasn't looking "to go compete with what Valve has done."
He said then that "you will get a clear answer from us very soon," indicating there would be more to come in the summer. "It's just whether what we have to day is the core of what we have [in the future] and it's probably not."

LOL @ GFWL.

*Goes back to using Steam*

They REALLY need to overhaul the entire GFWL experience before I even begin to think about using it. I guess better late then never.

When Microsoft's own games migrate from GFWL to Steam, you know they are abandoning GFWL and are only maintaining it to support those that cannot migrate unlike others.

Despite several developers abandoning the service and rumors of the service shutting down on July 1, Microsoft has stated that Games for Windows Live will continue.

Last fall, Microsoft closed the service’s marketplace and since then developers have been moving over to Steamworks to manage matchmaking, user content, and achievements. The latest developer to make the switch was Twisted Pixel, who transferred management of Ms. Splosion Man from GFWL to Steamworks last week.

Back in August, Microsoft said on the support page for Age of Empires Online that the service would be discontinued on July 1, 2014. That section of the post was quickly removed, and nothing has been said of it since.

When questioned about the July 1 shutdown recently, Microsoft told Game Informer: “We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service. As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.”

:smash: what a out of touch company
