We've known for some time that a sequel to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor was likely in the works, and today new details regarding the follow-up were leaked.

Revealed in a listing on Target's international website (as discovered by NeoGAF member DeathByBacklog), the new game is called Middle-earth: Shadow of War. The page features box art for it and a brief description.

"Go behind enemy lines to forge your army, conquer Fortresses, and dominate Mordor from within," it reads. "Experience how the award-winning Nemesis System creates unique personal stories with every enemy and follower, and confront the full power of the Dark Lord Sauron and his Ringwraiths in this epic new story of Middle-earth."

PS4 and Xbox One versions are both listed. The original Shadow of Mordor was also available on PC, though the absence of a PC version on Target's website doesn't preclude it from also being in development.

A release date is stated as August 22. That might prove to be true, but early release dates on retailers' websites don't always pan out.

In addition to the standard version of the game, a Gold Edition will also apparently be available. Here's what that includes, based on the description:

  • Slaughter Tribe Nemesis Expansion
  • Outlaw Tribe Nemesis Expansion
  • The Blade of Galadriel Story Expansion
  • The Desolation of Mordor Story Expansion
  • Gold War Chest
  • Over $125 in total value
The two Nemesis expansions feature "a new Orc Tribe featuring new enemies, followers, missions, abilities, weapons, Fortress, and wilderness updates, and a Mythic Gear Set." The story expansions, meanwhile, have "a new campaign, playable character, and abilities, side missions, enemies, allies, and more."

The Gold Edition page also reveals slightly more about the game itself, teasing the ability to "[f]orge a new Ring of Power, conquer Fortresses in massive battles, and dominate Mordor with your personal Orc army."

Great news and I hope it pans out. The first one was a brilliant game.

The first one was great but I hope the sequel has a bit more variety in the environments and that they kick up the quality of the graphics a bit more.

I can't wait to see this at e3!!! First is a classic!
I still need to try this game. It was a no-name game for me, so I never tried it despite the praise. And the e3 demos didn't impress me

The Nemesis system is truly original and as far as I know, unduplicated. It's got a great fight system, and taking on hordes of baddies is a blast. It has a cool (if a bit cliche by LotR standards) story. The game flows well from stealth to all-out action. Loved every minute of it and I still go back to it periodically.

Game will be a Xbox Play Anywhere Game for those in the Microsoft ecosystem.

I guess that means no Steam release? If it's Windows Store only my excitement has just been reduced by half.:really:

I fell for the hype, bought it, played it and was left wondering what everyone else saw in the game.

Day one. Shadow of Mordor is one of my favorite games this gen. Can't wait for the sequel.

I

I am all over this like a preist on an alter boy.

*insert 'i am touching myself' gif here•
I find this hideously offensive, and you should be banned.

As an altar boy who never got touched, even though I was the thinnest, sluttiest one, I can only assume that it's a deliberate racist attack against me.

In saying that, when I first played SoM, I didn;t enjoy the game that much. But after forcing myself 10 hours into it, 'IT' clicked, and I loved it.

I hope they include base building in some way in this one.

good god game looks like a great step up from the first one. I may pull a day one again like the first one.

Never played the first. I was always interested in it and followed it (videos, etc.). Will be onboard this one though.

Oh good lord that looks amazing. Hey Mass Effect team, this is how you do a sequel.

Holy crap, where did this come from/? Publisher did a great job keeping a lid on this one which is really difficult with leaks or promos so far out before release. I love getting a surprise game announcement like this especially for one that looks so good. I've had the first one for a long time after getting it for really cheap but I never gave it a chance. Its doubtful I'll get to it anytime soon with all the games I still want to play. But after watching that Siege preview this game is now on my radar in a big way.

HOLY s*** THIS LOOKS AWESOME!!

This woman's voice is better!

I wonder if it will be more purely war now, and less of the free roaming, do-what-you want type situation.

If your comrades are getting slaughtered on the field, it doesn't leave you much time to mingle with the slaves, and pick herbs.

Those dudes are annoying. Of course it is scripted and stylized to a certain degree, they are trying to show all the features and systems at work.

As for the game, it looks awesome. Glad to see the Nemisis system back, expanded on and still the heart of the game.

Also, am loving the greater RPG sill up focus, and the extre focus on loot & rewards.

I know. GB's blase style can get irritating. The game is my number one watch now.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Phil gets on stage and says "you didn't know it, but you've already seen a game running on Scorpio... Shadow of War!" ? It's obviously not running on base Xbox One or PS4 (Shadows are the biggest give-away, but it's looking pretty crisp). I might have said Pro footage, but it has Xbox control prompts. Now it is probably PC footage, but I imagine the Scorpio version will look like that.
