Official Thread Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Started spending more time on this over the past few days, liking it more now than I did initially but it really does seem like you are just doing the same thing constantly. Graphically it's a mixed bag, some nice textures here and there along with some otherwise average looking stuff, sad there is no dynamic time of day and that the skybox is totally static with no moving clouds etc, it's the only modern open world game I can think of that still does that. The human character models have really odd looking faces and the hair isn't very good either, often times it looks like a re-master of an older game to me than something that's was just released.

Was going to start this but decided to do a quick playthrough of Metro 2033 again. Wanted to play those two games again before the new one came out and figured I'd spread them out over the year.

Are you still in that first city? Because I thought that area pretty ugly. The next area (half-cave area) is much nicer to look at. That said, it vacillates between "woah" and "meh" for me. Very oddly inconsistent, but it has to handle a wide variance in computational load. I also can't decide (much with Tomb Raider) if I like the 4k mode or the Enhanced mode better. It says a lot for resolution that it's even a consideration, but man, I love it when it's super clean. It makes all the assets and lighting pop much more, and most of the time, the refinements fade into the background.

No I've been through a few areas now and it really is a mixed bag visually, the textures look nice in some areas but often times they seem to be on very mediocre models, same with things like the trees etc. There are some angles where the lighting hits just right and can look good from afar but when you close in on the main characters face he looks like someone who's had way too much cheek filler and it spilled into other parts of his face lol. I stuck with the enhanced mode because it reduces LOD pop in quite a bit compared to 4K where that seems to be pretty bad, also resolution isn't going to fix the things that I find disappointing graphically about the game.

Must be playing this incorrectly. Yet to be asked to pay real money.
Haha, I know right? I always felt, and especially after getting it & playing it, that the level at which they push the 'lootbox marketplace' on you was majorly blown out of proportion by some of the 'youtuber' channels & such. I remember seeing multiple of those 'opinion piece' youtube channels whinging on about how terrible it is, but when I got the game I never felt the slightest temptation or need to spend any additional money on the game...

Yep. On act 2 and at No point have i felt the need to spend real money.

Great game and looks great in 4k. Noticed the 4k cut scenes are pre rendered. Is that the same without the 4K dl?

Yeah all the major cutscenes were pre-rendered. I always hate games that have armor variety doing pre-rendered scenes. I want to see my character in whatever gear I've equipped them with dammit!

Just saw this is an Xbox Play Anywhere title.

Been playing this off and on, I can never seem to stay into it for too long though but I'm determined to finish it. I think my issue with it aside from it just looking a bit dated in many ways is that it just doesn't have a lord of the rings feel.

I hope their next game features an entirely new protagonist, I'd much rather have the option to play as a dwarf or a Wizard. I'd love for them to get out into more open and colorful areas and feature a dynamic day/night and weather system.

This game has far more color than the first game but the static skies, lifeless environments and lack of variety in the enemies just holds it back IMO. I also don't like that it's a bunch of smaller "open areas" instead of one true large open world, it just feels like a game that was built for last gen consoles and then dressed up.

I'd love to see the shire, Isengard, lothlorien, Rivendell, Rohan and maybe a dwarf mine. The combat feels fine but I'd be ok with reducing the number of enemies and allowing different types of combat. Allowing you to play as Gandalf, Saruman or even the Blue Wizards that nobody knows much about would be cool but they wouldn't be able to play like the character in this series, neither would a dwarf or a regular human.

I also would like to see them allow you to fly on those giant eagles or ride an Ent instead of just using the creatures in Mordor. LOTR just features so many characters, different types of landscapes etc it just seems a shame to keep it all focused in Mordor and on just one character.

I gave up with the game. Something about just made me want to stop playing. I might go back to it one day.

One thing I forgot to write is that they need some non enemies in some villages/cities as well, hopefully if they take it out of Mordor and have places like minas tirith, rohan, the shire etc they'll be able to let you interact with people you don't have to kill lol. I know that's far more ambitious than what that studio has done to this point and they may not be up for it but I think a real lord of the rings game needs to have some exploration and some non violent encounters here and there. I just want to feel a bit of a sense of wonder or awe when I walk into a new place, that's not something this game ever makes me feel.

I love the game, but I made a super Orc that I can't effing kill, and each time I die, he gets like, Bees, and then the bees become poisonous bees, and then those poisonous bees learn to summon dogs that can bark bees.

Cool video

I've yet to finish the game but have been going back to it now and then.

WB are looking to patent the system so hopefully another is planned? But the patent process started 5 years ago
