Mini-Review/Backlog Destruction Thread

Finished Ghost-Recon: Wildlands. While not a ghost recon game in the traditional sense, I did enjoy the change in game-play. The Story is nothing to write home about but there's enough there to stay interested, especially the ending if you 100% the game. I played the game on the most difficult difficulty and with that, its a tale of 2 games. If you play with friends online it lives up to the difficulty. 1 mess up and the Bolivan Army and Cartel are on you and chasing you for miles. Although there's nothing like you and 3 buddies trying to assault a base and it goes to hell and you're scrambling for an extract. With 3 AI partners, surprisingly, the game is much easier and forgiving especially with the use of drones and sync shots.

Some things I would fix:
1. if playing co-op I'd like it if one of us tagged a supply we'd all receive it instead of all of us having to individually tag things.
2. No more super sight AI enemies. Literally once you're seen by 1 person the entire base knows your position.
3. A little more variation in missions. There's only so much Intel you can pick up in a highly guarded base or choppers that need stealing before that gets old.

All in all though it was a fun game that held my attention. It sold well enough to get a sequel and I hope they get one.

See Horizon thread for my thoughts on that game. In a nutshell, best game I've played this generation. Loved it.

Last Guardian -- was hoping this would be good, but I just couldn't get past the awkward controls. I liked the setting and the atmosphere. It was just the dorky controls that messed it up for me. Sold it. Maybe I'll go back and try again later. Somehow I doubt it, though. Disappointing.

Gravity Rush 2 - I enjoyed the first half of the game a lot -- same charm as the first one, same joy in flying, same quirky Japanese atmosphere -- but by about the 2/3 mark, it started to feel very repetitive, and I quit. The game could have used some good editing. There were too many repetitive "tablet challenges." I came to dread those. And there was a boss you had to fight about 5 or 6 times -- you would "win," but then she'd fly away, and then she'd appear again later in the story for another boss battle, which you would "win," and she'd fly, and this repeated itself over and over. It was dumb game design -- it completely removed the sense of victory.

In general, they just tried too hard to pad the content. The smaller, more modest game that came before it (which appeared on the Vita) was much better. I still thought I got my money's worth with GR2, and I enjoyed the first half plenty. It just didn't have enough to go the distance.

The Uncharted Collection: a great kick to play through these again. I thought they held up very well. Nathan Drake is one of my favorite game characters. I like Elena and Scully a lot, too. The action is fun, especially the second time around where I could breeze through rather than getting stumped or stopped.

I was planning to do this run-through and then carry on to Uncharted 4, but by the time I finished all 3, I was burned out on the series, so I need to give it a rest and wait until the spirit moves me.

Went back and finished the technical mess that is Telltales Batman game.

The opening of episode 5 in particular is really jumpy. It has some good moments but they need to add real gameplay now as their games are getting stale.

Little Nightmares. Not really helping the backlog since it just came out. Anyways really wanted to love the game but only enjoyed it. The game looks beautiful and definitely has a good erie atmosphere to it. Great dreadful music to go with it as well. That said the gameplay left a bit to be desired. I felt like the 3D levels in a 2D view made it hard to gauge just where you were moving and it got me dead a few times. Game is extremely short at five levels and maybe half hour per level on a first time trip. There are some collectables that will help me get a bit more out of it. Otherwise $20 probably a bit steep but worth a try when it's on sale if you enjoyed games like Limbo or Inside.

I'm trudging through that game. There are only maybe two or three minutes of cool scenes per episode. The rest is pretty boring. It would help tremendously if we could quickly advance through the lines of dialogue.

Fallout 4: Far Harbor (PS4 Pro):
Similar to the Fallout 4 main game, I loved everything about this game until the last mission. A bit of a dud of an ending, but that may have just been based on my own choices. Regardless, loved the new location, the weather, the new enemies, new weapons, new factions, everything. Good stuff. I'm going to take a break before I get to Nuka World, sad it's the last piece of Fallout 4 I'll have to experience.

Just finished Halo wars 2 campaign. If I didn't know any better, based off the endings to 1 and 2, it would seem that MS wants to make Halo wars its own franchise.;)

My review:
Its more Halo Wars. If you didn't like the first one, the second one isn't going to sway you. 343 Industries and Creative Assembly managed to make the gamepad controls even better than the first. The story was interesting enough but in true Halo fashion ends on a cliff hanger. The campaign is short only 12 missions which took me roughly 6.5 hours playing on solo normal difficulty. Times may vary depending on the difficulty or if playing co-op. Some of the later mission were tough on normal so I can't imagine legendary difficulty. They added more leader powers and different kinds of troops this go round to keep thing fresh and challenging.

Cut-scenes were amazing again thanks to Blur studios. Haven't touched the multiplayer so I might give that a spin. Overall what I played was solid and I hope they do more with the Halo Wars franchise and not let another 8 years go by between games.

I've been playing through alot of different games on MS game pass. The one that stuck out for me was Shantae and The Pirate's Curse.

Its metroid-vania platforming goodness wrapped in an aesthetically pleasing package. It was so good, I bought the sequeal Shantae: Half-Genie Hero immediately after finishing the game.

Oh, great thread idea! I've been playing alot of one game lately...It's called OVERWATCH. It's one of the best damn games I've ever played and all of you should have it in your catalogue. If you don't own it, you are the video game equivalent of a guy who has never seen a James Bond movie. Go watch a Bond flick! Go buy Overwatch!

+ It's a competitive, team based multiplayer shooter that is actually inviting to gamers who suck at these games. Mercy, Symmetra, and my personal favorite...Reinhardt require next to no twitchy FPS skill to use and actually contribute to team wins. Brilliant!

+ It's Blizzard which means two things. Its polished as all get out, and they're going to support it better than all other games in existence. They're constantly adding new content and balancing the game on a weekly/monthly basis. Overwatch will be a thing in 5 years. Other games won't.

+ It's video game the video game. If you like video games, you will like this one. As much as me? Probably not. It's a game where you control a super hero and you must eliminate other super heroes. Isn't that why we're here?

+ It's the perfect game to pick up after setting it down for X amount of time. Have you played 15 hours of The Witcher III, set it down for 6 months, and trying to come back to it? Lol, f#$@ you. The Witcher III isn't having any of that s$#t. Overwatch welcomes you back with open arms. Overwatch loves you. Overwatch loves us all.

+ Overwatch League. Just google it. Crazy stuff is happening.

- You will have to hear blow hardy people say "Oh the story in Overwatch is brilliant". It's not brilliant and the way it's delivered sucks.

- Loot boxes. Loot boxes kind of stink.

10/10. It's a must own game IMO.

I've almost purchased Overwatch several times. I love the look of it and its gameplay is fun. I played the free weekend a while back. But it seemed really deep with all those characters to have to master which put me off because of my backlog.

I really wish they would produce an animation of it. It seems perfect for a Netflix show I can binge watch.

Good enthusiasm for Overwatch but I just can't get into it. Friend I used to play with only wants to do ranked and there's too much meta for me to enjoy it. You pretty much have to play one of a handful of characters, or be pressured into it by the toxic community, that Blizzard decides to buff for that season.

BUSTERMAN and Viktor I must help you, for reading your posts make me weep.

- "It's too deep". It's 26 characters who have a primary fire, secondary fire, and an ultimate. It's not exactly Dota 2, or even Street Fighter V in terms of having to know things to be effective.

- "All those characters to have to master". I've played over 500 hrs of Overwatch at this point and have mastered exactly 0 heroes. With that being said, I do think one of the main hooks of this game is the learning itself. It's straight cocain when you learn you have to size up the enemy Tracer to determine how tight you can bunch your Symmetra turrets. Crappy Tracers can get popped if you set up a microwave room. If you do that to a solid Tracer, you've basically put your team down a man during the next team fight. You learn things like that and your SR instantly goes up. Progress!

- "Friend only wants to play ranked". Overwatch is ranked. Quickplay is where nightmares are born.

- "Too much meta for me to enjoy"...If you don't want to deal with the meta you do this. Instalock the hero you want as soon as hero selection pops up. 90 to 95% of the time, you'll be able to get that hero. Let your teammates pick around you. If you're in Diamond rank or lower, meta heroes don't matter. Just pick heroes you're at least decent with.

- "Pressured into it by the toxic community"... Option 1, which is the far more enjoyable prescription, you give better than you get. I love the trash talk. I thrive on it. If your teams Tracer is yelling at you to get off Widow, you show that Tracer what headshots look like. When the social pressure is there, the intensity goes up. When the intensity goes up, you know you're playing a damn fine game. Or option number 2, turn team chat off and pretend your playing a quiet single player game with the most advanced human like AI in existence. That's no fun though.

Overwatch is like baking a cake. Each team has six ingredients, you being one of the six. Sometimes your cake needs more eggs, sometimes it needs a higher quality egg. Maps like Dorado and Route 66 are the ovens. Two cakes enter, one cake leaves. If you got a little Gordon Ramsey in you, and you like analyzing, playing with, and assessing ingredients then it's only a matter of time before you show up on google image search for "real Overwatch tattoos". Or if you just like yelling at 14 year olds for choosing Torb on attack.

Killing Floor 2 - PS4 Pro - I loooooooooove this game. Platinum trophied it yesterday, and kept playing for hours leveling up other classes. Fun and addicting horde wave coop game with tons of different unique classes. This is easily one of the bloodiest and most violent games I've ever played, lakes of blood will be covering everything if you hole up in a specific spot with your team. The graphics are really nice on the Pro, and it runs fantastically even with explosions and armies of zeds blowing up into tiny pieces around you. I love that strategic retreats (AKA running like a pansy) are a huge part of being good at this game, and that no team is going to be successful with out teamwork and a diverse set of classes. Love this game, can't wait for the summer DLC to hit PS4. If anyone here wants to play, let me know!

Thumper - PS4 Pro - This is a beautiful music game with an awesome sense of speed and beautiful arty graphics. Unfortunately my old man reaction skills couldn't get very far into the game, and I'm not sure how much more I"ll play it because of that. I'm sure this game would look incredible in VR.

Nex Machina - PS4 Pro - This game makes me feel old like Thumper, but never feels too difficult. Constant action, beautiful graphics, bullet hell awesomeness. Housemarque is the best.

Unfinished Swan - PS4 - Unique game with fantastic art and style. A children's fairy tale about death and mortality. Finished it in one sitting, cool experience.

I completed Persona 5 last night. It was an 135 hour adventure that I won't soon forget. That game has the longest boss battles I have ever encountered. I kid you not, the last boss battle went on for over 90 minutes. It was just a long epic battle where it went in two phases and I had to use almost all my items that luckily I had been hording up to that point. The last phase involved the boss growing to the size of a building, haha. I've been hanging out with the Persona crew for almost 3 months and I'm a little sad that its over. I really grew attached to many of the core characters because the writing and story presentation was so well done. I'll miss the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.

It now time for my next adventure. I'm having a hard time deciding which game to start between Nioh, Mass Effect: Andromeda and Final Fantasy 15. I've been in RPG mode for a while now so I'm leaning towards FF15. The last game I played had turn based combat so a switch to real-time combat should be nice.

Finished Ico HD this weekend. Really wasn't a fan of it. I can play older games without issue but there was just too much wrong with it, namely the controls, camera, and combat. I did enjoy the story and atmosphere though. Not sure how similar Shadow of Colossus or The Last Guardian is but after playing Ico my interest in either of those games went way down.

I really felt the same way when playing the original.

The game really stuck with me for some reason though. Looking back, I can't honestly say the game is enjoyable, but I'm really glad I got to play it.

It's weird when you feel obligated to experience games.

I finally got around to finishing my second play through of Dragon Age Inquisition. This time around I was a female Qunari mage. If you ignore all the side quests that are MMO fetch quests or quest that exist just for padding and focus just on the story missions and companion quests, then you have a solid game that has aged pretty well.

I've been trying (and mostly failing) to knock some of my backlog down before all the fall games come out.

I did finish Farcry 4. I had started it ages ago and never finished it. Actually ended up replaying it, as I kind of forgot how much I love this series.

Now off to start and hopefully finish Primal.

So is it safe to say you will be Far Cried out by the time five releases?

Not a backlog as it just came out, but Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice was great. Strong story based game with light puzzles and combat. Definitely worth a playthrough in my opinion. Bonus if you can play it with headphones as it uses binaural audio.

Finished Agents of Mayhem on PS4. Its ok. I don't think its as good as Saints Row 4 but its not terrible. Story wise, I think there were too many characters and you couldn't really focus on the plot. Plus they seemed like they were trying a bit hard with all the over the top personalities. With that said the dialog between squad-mates, especially those meant to be teamed together, was spot on. I chuckled a good number of times. Gameplay wise, it felt like a slower Crackdown with hints of Saints row sprinkled in.

All in all not a bad showing for a pseudo new franchise but there is a lot they can fix next time around.

Finished The Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel on PC. The game surprised me with how much I enjoyed it. The port was superbly done by Xseed. 21:9, 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio native support, full controller/ keyboard support, 5000 new lines of voiced dialogue was added to the game, Solid 60fps optimization, and an inclusion of a turbo mode to skip through scenes. Needless to say it shows that alot of work went into this port.

As for the game itself, the character development was surprising for what I initially thought would be a cliche filled JRPG. And the story twists and turns in ways I wouldn't have expected.

The music I thought was pretty stellar and fit the theme of the game well.

The actual combat gameplay takes some getting used to but after you get through the tutorial stages, it all comes together.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game. My only criticism would be the ending. The game ends on the mother of all cliffhangers and there has been no word on a release date for the next game in the series for the pc.:(

Halfway through Doom and while it looks nice, it's repetitive and kinda boring. What am I missing?

I felt the same thing. I loved it at first. It was a great retro experience. I got about mid way through and stopped. Killing the same enemies over and over just gets old.

Nostalgia is great for a time, then it just gets repetitive.

I tried playing DOOM as well, & I think I'm just burnt out on FPS games... I heard so much good about it, but it made me realize how much I missed DooM III's slower atmospheric survival horror vibe

Shame

Awesome thread. I have been going through a lot of games trying to complete them and these are my verdict on each game:

Batman Arkham Knight: My first Batman and I LOVED it. Gotham is fantastically designed and crafted and is full of meaningful and interesting content such as penguin weapon missions, stopping two face robbing banks, taking out watch towers etc. The campaign is great and the level design really does facilitate to the sense and feeling of Batman. Each character is represented well and you see the turmoil of being Batman and how it impacts Bruce Wayne. The gameplay is fantastic and there is so much variety with stealth, combat, an array of gadgets and the batmobile.

Watch Dogs 2: A huge improvement over Watch Dogs in terms of how to create an exciting and fun open world. They have nailed all the locales in the game and captured the entrepreneurial vibe of San Fran and Silicon Valley. The campaign is just good lighthearted fun and does not take itself too seriously. There are a lot more options in tackling missions and the hacking now feels like it has some depth to it and it always fun to mess around with the A.I by calling in gangs or the police. Best open world since GTA V for a GTA type game but won't win any awards for story or characters.

Horizon Zero Dawn: I echo the sentiments of Andy, best game this gen bar none.

MGSV
Divinity 2 (50% done)
Deus Ex: Mankind (50% done)

Arizona Sunshine (VR)
Superhot (VR)

Yikes! I thought I was bad with 15-20 games not including arcade titles. Including games like Skyrim, Bioshock Infinite, New Vegas, Far Cry 3, Metal Gear Rising, Alien Isolation, etc where I have NO excuse for not playing and/or finishing them. I NEED to get through some of these games that I know I will love before they become outdated to the point of diminishing the experience!

You guys with 100+ backlog are basically collecting video games like baseball cards at this point. lol I feel you though. I have to force myself to be really selective and research games to make sure I will like them before I buy, otherwise I too would have 50 or more unplayed games!
