Mini-Review/Backlog Destruction Thread

Since I last posted I've finished Monkey Island Special Edition and Limbo on Xbox. First time ever playing either of those and enjoyed both. I thought some of the puzzles in Monkey Island were a bit of a stretch, but that's just a product of the time.

I also beat Fatal Frame Maiden of Black Water on the Switch and Ioved it. Can't wait to play more from that series.

Also just finished Wolfenstein The Old Blood. Saved that game for last in the series (not counting Youngblood) and I think it turned out to be my favorite.

Next up to get in the spooky spirit I'm going to play yet another game I've wanted to play for a while but never did, Murdered Soul Suspect.

My gaming tastes are all over the place right now.

I'm erratically playing Horizon Forbidden West (PS5). I might be 3 hours in.

Started Plague Tale Requiem on PC and XBSX via gamepass. Very pretty and well put together game especially give the size of the studio. Given their prowess on this and Flight Simulator I think its a lock that they get acquired. Question is by whom?

For some odd reason I started and finished Batman: The Telltale series on XBSX. Was very surprised how much fun the game was and how invested in the story I was.

Murdered Soul Suspect was actually a great game. Was totally engrossed in the story and thought the atmosphere was spot on.

Next up I'm finishing up my playthrough of the Metro series with Metro Exodus.

Bought Triangle Strategy AGAIN, this time on PC and completed it. Still my GOTY. PC version loads much faster and that's it. Wanted to get the good ending this time and I did. What I didn't know is that the good ending is alot harder than all the other endings. But it was still worth it and I enjoyed it again.

Finished Metro Exodus today after about 25 hours of gameplay.

Honestly, when I first started I didn't think I was going to like this game very much. The first 10 hours are slow and didn't feel like a Metro game. But once I got to Yamantau it really turned around. Yamantau and Taiga were my favorite overall levels but also the ending of the game was fantastic. Overall a good ending to a great series.

Next up is Monkey Island 2 Special Edition.

Playing through A Plague Tale Requiem. Hugo and Amicia's mom is truly in the running for terrible video game mom.

Finished up Monkey Island 2 Special Edition today. Overall, I liked the first game a bit more. This one was still enjoyable, but I had to use hints pretty generously throughout the entire thing. I just thought the puzzles were too disconnected in a lot of cases. Ending was interesting though.

Next up I'm planning on starting a Bioshock series playthrough. I've played the original and Infinite when they first came out, but never played 2 and never did any of the DLC. So decided that now would be a good time to work through the series.

Just finished the Supraland campaign (played it as soon as I saw it was set to leave Game Pass). Game was very cleverly designed, despite a few frustrating secrets. I don't have the mental fortitude to 100% it, but I enjoyed the gameplay.

Finished Bioshock today and I'm not sure if it's just the nostalgia talking or what but wow that is a good game. So fun to just take it slow, explore, and really take in the atmosphere. I did a wrench build and it was a blast.

Next up I'm on to my next Resident Evil game in the series, Resident Evil 2. Playing the remake (RE2Make).

I was thoroughly impressed by Bioshock 1. I never played anything after.

Gotham knights and Sonic Frontiers

Both fun but both could have been better. GK should have been better considering they had the Arkham games to go off.

Sonic team finally nailing 3D Sonics controls and should hopefully nail it next time.

Haven't been playing much the last few months. Might have been the fact I broke my left index finger in August so made it hard to game obviously and had to relearn using my middle finger instead. Still don't have much range with the finger but used to it now. Played Resident Evil 1 remake and enjoyed that, but tried a few other games including Biomutant and Guardians of the Galaxy and gave up in boredom.

That said, I recently started Bloodstained Ritual of the Night and really enjoying it. Also really liking Warzone DMZ so hopefully getting the interest in gaming back just in time for Callisto Protocol and new NFS.

Finished Resident Evil 2 Remake today. Never played the original so I can't compare this to anything, but in my opinion it was super high quality survival horror. Played Leon A and then Claire B both on standard, and I couldn't put the game down.

Next up I'm going to be playing Inside. Played Limbo a couple months ago and while I know they aren't sequels or anything, I enjoyed Limbo a lot and am sure I'll like Inside too.

Over Thanksgiving break I've knocked out a few small games - Inside, Call of the Sea, and Slender The Arrival.

All fun in their own way. Inside was definitely a step up from Limbo and I thoroughly enjoyed just how weird it got at the end. Call of the Sea was excellent, an interesting take on a Lovecraftian story. Probably one of my favorite games I've played in the last few months or so. And Slender The Arrival, while I understand why it gets criticism, I liked it for what it was.

Next up I'll be moving on to Bioshock 2. The only Bioshock I never played, but after recently experiencing the greatness that is Bioshock 1 again, I'm excited to play 2. Will also be going through Minerva's Den.

Somehow got addicted to Assassins Creed Syndicate. This game is really fun, surprising I never got around to playing it. Combat is different, though I found it funny that enemies went from tanky to pushovers in just a few upgrades. Liking the story quite a bit too.

Starting a play through of Avengers as well since I never checked out the Series X update. The gameplay is meh but man does this game look great. I liked the quality of life improvements as well, such as auto updating gear with a single button press.

Been rolling through Horizon FW. I’m more than halfway through and should finish it soon. Really loving it overall but there is a lot of open world bloat. I typically enjoy a good healthy amount of side content, even the standard rote open world bulls*** (I 100% Ghost of Tsushima’s map), but… man, I have so many other games to get to, that I find myself just mainlining the main quest.

Still really having a good time. If they do DLC again, I can see myself coming back down the line and putting another 10-20 hours in.

PS5: Horizon Forbidden West
I'm slowly making my way through the game. Its well crafted and made with care, I'm just overwhelmed with all the other stuff in my backlog

XBX/PC: Pentiment and Plague Tale Requiem.
Pentiment is really good. Better than I ever hoped it would be. If it were not for Triangle Strategy, it would be my GOTY. Plague tale is beautiful but getting a little long in the tooth. Maybe should have ended a few hours ago. Still a good game though.

Switch:
Thank god nothing right now.

Realised I never finished As Dusk Falls so went back to that. It's a fun story if you can get past the art style and annoying child acting

everyone but one of the brothers survived (think he dies no matter what?) I would go back and mop up the achievements to see the other outcomes but no dialogue skip is a massive turn off.

3/5

Finished Pentiment. Really great game. Far exceeded my expectations. Shows Obsidian still has narrative chops. Its going to end up one of Microsoft's vastly underrated first party releases EVER next to Gears Tactics.

Any Breath of the Wild stans in here?

I picked it back up for the first time in a year tonight. I was only like ten hours in but I do want to beat it. Once again though I am just not getting the appeal (yet). I haven’t played a Zelda game since Wind Waker but historically I adore the series. I’m finishing HFW on PS5 right now and going from that to BotW was such a jarring difference not just in framerate and graphical quality but just overall feel.

Played for maybe 30 mins and shut it off. Wondering if I’ve just outgrown Nintendo games or what. Felt similar with Mario Odyssey. Or maybe I just need to throw a few more hours in and see how I feel then.

Either way, made me kinda sad.

Finished up Bioshock 2 + Minerva's Den yesterday. First time ever playing either, and I can't understand the negativity I sometimes see Bioshock 2 get. Felt very much like Bioshock 1 to me and I mean that in a good way. Both it and Minerva's Den are gems.

Next up I'm playing Beyond Good and Evil. Never played it, have always heard good things, decided its time to give it a try.

Playing High on Life ( PC/XBSX). Very nice change of pace game from everything being super serious to a game that doesn't take itself serious at all.

Went back to Cyberpunk 2077 to clean some stuff up before the Expansion drops. I still believe that if the game had been originally released in the 1.6 patch state, it would be talked about in Game of a Generation type discussions but they obviously dropped the ball.

Finished Beyond Good and Evil today. Another game that I wonder why I ever waited so long to play. I know as each year passes by its probably more and more unlikely that they'll ever release Beyond Good and Evil 2, but here's to hoping because I'd love to get more time with this series.

Next up, Batman Arkham Knight.

I loved Beyond Good and Evil. Bought it for the original Xbox and again when they did the remaster. I too fear that the sequel will never actually come out but that may not be such a bad thing. From what they're previously shown, I'm afraid that what they have right now is so far removed from what made the original game so good that it would be Beyond good and evil in name only.
