Mini-Review/Backlog Destruction Thread

At this point, I'll buy what I think I'm interested in.. spend a few hours in the game and if it doesn't hold me, it goes in the unfinished list. Otherwise, I either finish, or continue to buy newly released games. Rinse and Repeat.. Sure it's a lot of money, but it beats drinking, I guess.

My backlog is ridiculous too:

Horizon: Zero Dawn
God of War 3
Nioh
Dark Souls 2/3
MGSV
Divinity 2 (50% done)
Deus Ex: Mankind (50% done)
Dragon Age Inquisitor
Mass Effect: Andromeda
All the Telltale games
MadMax
Age of Barbarian
Bloodbourne
Resident Evil 0
Lone Echo (VR)
Arizona Sunshine (VR)
Superhot (VR)

How’s Deus Ex? I regret not picking it up for $9 during Black Friday.

I tried playing DOOM as well, & I think I'm just burnt out on FPS games... I heard so much good about it, but it made me realize how much I missed DooM III's slower atmospheric survival horror vibe

Shame

I keep trying to fire up this game as well. It’s just not sticking and I’m a FPS fan. It’s not bad. Just a little bland in terms of gameplay.

Finished Wolfenstein 2. Great ride. First one was better, but second one was still good....except for the ending.

This game....

Highly recommended. You can finish the whole thing in about 6 hours, just keep playing until you're sure you finished it, it'll be very obvious*.

Don't read anything about it, especially reviews or user reviews (until you finish it, you don't want any spoilers), just hit download and go with your gut on gameplay though the warning in the beginning of the game is there for good reason. I'd say don't prejudge the game based on aesthetics, it's pretty solid.

It's FREE. This game just celebrated 1 million downloads last week.

why are you looking at this spoiler? no spoilers, the ending won't be really obvious actually.

Both have great art styles.

Best played with pants down?

Get Even - Really enjoy this one! Had a good mix of stealth, gunplay, and exploration. The story is really twisty, and it kept me interested until the end. Not a lot to complain about other than some bugs that kept me stuck in the environment a few times, but reloading a checkpoint always worked. Definitely recommended.

Guns, Gore, and Cannoli - Really fun, challenging, short side scrolling shooter. Loved the art style too, but would only recommend on a sale due to the length.

Assassins Creed Origins - I love this game! To me it’s a real return to form for the assassins creed franchise. The graphics are freaking amazing, quests are mostly interesting, and I love the overhaul they did on the combat. This is my game of the year 2017.

Finished Tales of Berseria (PC) and Super Mario Odyssey (Switch) in mid December. Both were great ways to end the previous year. Bersira's story was a little darker than what I expected from a Tales game but other wise solid. I think I still favor Tales of Xilla more than anything but this one was still pretty good.
What more can be said of Mario Odyssey. It was fun for the whole family to play or watch someone play.

I JUST finished Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on Switch. Impressions and maybe slight to major spoiler in the Xenoblade thread in the Nintendo section soon.

I found Berseria really lacking. I found that I had to force myself to finish it.

But the art style was rad.

I get what you are saying. It was standard revenge fair that I thought was a bit dark for a tales game with ALOT of back tracking. Not their best outing for sure but like I said still a solid game. The art style was pretty good. More surprised there would be more jokes about Velvet and her lack of clothes on for the entire game but whatever.

Wolfenstein: The New Order - (X1X) - Played the first 25% of this game at launch on PS4. Was enjoying it, but moved on to some other new game at the time and never came back. Bought a New Order / Old Blood combo pack when it was on sale during the holidays, and finally made my way through this game. Loved most every second of it. So well done, so much fun. Immediately started the Old Blood after finishing it.

Played through Firewatch the other night. Great game, loved the dialogue and the atmosphere of the game, though the ending was kinda a let down. Great game to put on and tune out the world for a while, one of the best "walking simulators" this gen. Easily one of the best $10 purchases in the last year.

Finished up Shadow of Mordor today. Game was alright. Story was really good, combat was good and usually pretty good flow with the combo system. Outside of that the controls were hit or miss honestly. Too many buttons that did multiple things inside or outside of combat, it seemed like I fought the controls more than the actually enemies. Still not sure I would bother with Shadow or War though. Maybe when it's $10 or less like I paid for this game.

Played through Gone Home today. Cool little game with a pretty neat story, totally different than what I thought it would be. I totally dug the atmosphere of the game and the "creepy" old house (reminded me of the house I grew up in, complete with old servants quarters and creepy "secret" passages). While super short, I think it only took me 2hrs, the story is really engrossing and well done.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Good game with interesting little story, clever aural game mechanics, puzzles, and dark souls combat. Also stellar graphics. Played on PC.

I recently finished up the main campaign in Shadow of Mordor too, and have the same feelings. The game was really good, cool story and some pretty good visuals. The combat was pretty fun, but was marred by some clunky controls. I still have to play through the DLC for it, though I am in no hurry to do so now, I think I've had my fill of the game for a bit. No way I'd even think of the sequel at this point. I think it was my buy of the year during the spring (or summer) sale for $4

Yea I have the GOTY edition or whatever it's called and haven't tried any of it. Like you I have no interest in it at this time. Way too much of a backlog. That said I did get like 25 hours out of the game I think? So easily got my monies worth.

I need to play that again. Partly because I missed one achievement, but also because I played it pre new PC so I wasn't able to max out the graphics. Even so it was amazing on medium, medium-high.

Finished The Legend of Heroes: Cold Steel 2 (PC). For my money Legend of Heroes and the Tales of Series are the best JRPG series going right now. Only problem is waiting for the next game in the series to come over to the US. Both Nihon Falcom and Namco Bandai respectively don't do simultaneous Japan and US releases for these series, so the wait can be 1-2 years at a time.

Completed Kingdom hearts 1.5. For an early PS2 it holds up surprising well, combat is fun, the story is great and engaging and the worlds are full of charm. It is quite a meaty game and challenging in parts but the game design is obtuse and will perplex you in where to go. If you are jumping into Kingdom Hearts 3 all I will say is don't do it, the story is not about Disney characters and is far more frigging complex. The story continuing into 2 is already confusing me and I guess I am paying the price for not playing rechain memories I think. The combat, visuals and animation is much improved in the second game and the worlds are more open. I am really stoked for Kingdom Hearts 3 now.

Also started playing inFamous First Light and so far it is a highly polished, enjoyable and tight experience. Fetch is fantastic to control and I really like the punch to the combat. The story so far is alright and nothing special but Fetch is an interesting character.I bought it for £4 and think it is easily worth £10-£15.

LEGO Ninjago Videogame - Got it on sale at BB and had low expectations but I was pleasantly surprised. This one is more about combat than puzzles which I found refreshing. It helps I took a long break from LEGO games. Recommend it on the cheap.

Dying Light The Following - Haven’t finished yet but a fun expansion for sure. The buggy is really well implemented and the core gameplay remains fantastic. I think Dying Light is one of the best games ever so more of it is always a good thing.
