Mini-Review/Backlog Destruction Thread

Finished God of War (2018 ) . The game deserves every bit of praise it received Storytelling, graphics and game-play were all superb. It sets itself up well for the inevitable sequels and even other mythologies. Easily a GOTY candidate for 2018.

I’m about 35 hours into Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and its so awesome. I played about the same amount of time with Origins which I put down for Red Dead 2 but when I lost interest in RDR2 I didn’t have strong motivation to go back to Egypt. But Odyssey is hitting all the right notes for me with its beautiful world, fun combat and quests. Also, I was able to re-enable HDR for this game and fixed the washed-out look with some tweaking of the in-game HDR settings. Who knew a couple of nudges to the HDR sliders would produce such results but I’m thankful Ubi went the extra mile to provide this option.

Is Ubi the publisher giving gamers the best bang for their buck? I’m not sure yet because Capcom has also been incredibly good at post launch support for their games most of which has been free. But the Assassins Creed games offer incredible amount of content with no scummy microtransactions that mess up the game. Its all cosmetic stuff and sure it’s a bit pricey but none of it is mandatory and chances are high you’ll find something just as good or even better just by playing the game.

Haven't posted here in a while. Looks like my last update was I still playing Bloodborne. Never did beat the game, just kind of ran out of steam and needed a break. I'm towards the end of the game (Lecture Building) but wanted to make sure I hit all the optional areas before finishing, plus the DLC. Sometime...

I'm currently playing through Ocarina of Time 3D. It's not bad but not sure where all the hype is over it. Maybe back when it released it was really something, but at this point it's just a generic adventure game to me and control wise the 3DS probably doesn't do it any favors.

Honestly, I never understood the love for the game even at release. It was fine, but no masterpiece imo. It hasn't aged well either, as most 3d games from that generation. Mario 64 still plays okay and would be great with better graphics and dual stick control though, I'd play it today on og hardware and still appreciate it.

I second that. I played Ocarina of Time when it was new on the N64. It was well put together like most Nintendo games are but I didn't see it as anything out of the normal.

I'm not with the gaming media's 10/10 scores , but 6/10? Maybe if we scored games as we should (today a 6/10 really is a 1/5 in most regards) I should maybe agree but that's a bit harsh lol

It's good and I really liked the 2D bits but I have no desire to play it again. Still much better than Sunshine.

I will probably play RE2 remake after I reached my target for Diablo 3 & got bored. For a 6 years old game, its still surprisingly value. It is still fun to play in group when pushing the limit.

I finally finished Fallout 4 at 91 hours. I could have easily spent another 50+ hours in this world with more to do and explore. I chose to side with the BoS and it was cool marching into battle with Liberty Prime again. This game is up there with Fallout 3 for me I really enjoyed my time with it.

I bought RE 2 in steam. Downloading the game now. I hope its not too scary.

I am not sure if my download speed is slow. I average about 615 KB/s on steam, & I download RE2 for like 6 hours & still only about 50%.

So had a really sad realization today. I went through my backlog and counted up the games I was definitely interested in playing and the number came out to 110!! Holy crap!! :surprise::surprise::surprise:

And some of those games are huge like Fallout 4 and Skyrim, and I only counted bioshock and uncharted collections once lol. That also wasn’t even counting games I got through gwg that I wasn’t really interested in.

So the plan now is to only buy new games with bing points since those credits expire and focus entirely on the backlog. You’ll be seeing a lot more from me around here! Been fun reading through the thread, haven’t checked in for awhile.

I am still playing Diablo 3. I am surprised the mileage I have done considering its a 6 years old game. I am playing a few builds I never tried, & also for first time ever, playing a supporting role in MP. There is more depth than I expected to play support builds, depends on the group you play with & the level to play. More defense focus, more offensive focus, etc

I am on holiday now traveling, to my parent place, staying in my old room. I only brought my 2014 laptop so Choice of game to play is limited,

I just play mainly still Diablo 3 mostly in groups and a bit of grim dawn. Games are choppy and even sub 30fps. Console experience I guess.

I finished Pathfinder: Kingmaker on PC. There's a good game in there. Its too bad that there are numerous bugs and glitches and the quests are unexplained to say the least. Divinity Original Sin 2 and Pillars of Eternity 2 are much more polished experiences.

Moving on the Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4), Dragon Quest XI(PC), Crackdown 3 ( X1/PC) and Hand of Fate 2( X1)

I beat Ocarina of Time 3D recently. Overall it was a fun game. Next up is Left Alive. Not the best reviews and certainly some Japan jank, but looked fun enough and I like the Front Mission stuff.

Darksiders 3 7/10

Enjoyed it but the check points and loading times let it down

The check points, or lack of at at some areas are bad. The gameplay is very shallow though. Dodge & attack works for most bosses.

I am still playing Diablo 3, but mostly in Group. I have a nice group for near-Meta setup (2 support chars, 2 damage dealers) at high difficulties level so its quite fun.

I also started playing a bit of Path of exile new league. Its crazy how much I spend already on this 'free' game. Almost 500€!!! I seen some cosmetic wings going for outrageous 64€. Thankfully most of the MTX armors looks ugly (You have to really try to have armors this ugly, but PoE managed) , so I can resist not spending on them., even though I am a big cosmetic fanatic.

But I am a loot hoorder so I may buy some (very expensive) inventory tabs (It cost 20€ for 6 inventory tabs)

Well I made it through 1.5 missions in Left Alive and think I've had enough. It's a jank game no doubt. I can put up with that. Graphics bad, controls bad, etc. But the game honestly had false advertising. They say you can play it however you want, but that is impossible. The controls are so terrible that if you get into shooting combat you are going to die quickly. Aiming is slow and no auto aim even when turned on on console. Plus ammo is very scarce so really only way to be offensive is to build explosives with crafting materials found throughout the level. Great, except it takes two or three devices just to kill someone which is crazy.

So that leaves you to play stealth, which works except when it doesn't. I've had enemies just up and 360 no scope me out of nowhere. Saving is seldom available so you can't even trial and error without wasting a lot of time. You also have no real way to know what the enemies can see as well outside of an icon above their head. I assume that means you are within viewing range but that's not the case either. Also, to tie in with the first complaint, there is no real hand to hand combat and a way to silently take out an enemy like in MGS. Only way around it is hope you're just outside an unknown magic area to melee enemies to death.

Side missions include finding survivors and guiding them to safety. They follow a predetermined path that you can't change at all, and can only tell them to walk or stop. Except if you're not right on them then you have to go into your map and tell them to stop, which is a pain, especially when trying to thread the needle past enemies. My first survivor save wasn't bad, but I was literally around the corner from getting to the second when it said mission failed and survivor was killed before I got there??? There weren't any enemies around so not sure what it's talking about, unless it doesn't say you failed until you arrive, in which case again it was a complete waste of time.

Definitely pass on this game. Maybe $20 or less/rent is worth seeing what it's about if you like the Front Mission games.

The hype over Sekiro means I think I want to finally get into Dark Souls series. Got the whole trilogy last year for really cheap including the Remaster so guess I'll hop into that. From one rage game to another..

I'm enjoying the last season of the Walking Dead (Telltale). I've been playing through it, and I'm just about finished with episode 3. The 4th episode is the last one, and it's out 3/26.

In the last couple months went to my backlog and finally beat Bloodbourne, Doom and Dead Cells. All 3 felt better than before and I think it shows sometimes it’s a matter of timing or being in the mood for a game. Bloodbourne was fine but not amazing until something clicked past the 2/3rds mark. Don’t think I was even playing Doom right. Dead Cells much better balanced since their mega update and it’s in my top 5 Indies for this gen.

Now playing Divison 2 and Sekiro. Division 2 is far and away my favorite looter shooter of this gen. Plays surprisingly well single player for those not interested in online play. Really satisfying gun play. Sekiro just demolished me. Need to watch some tutorials. Nothing you ever learned in Dark Souls or Bloodbourne helps you here.

I started Dark Souls Remastered last night. Only just beat the asylum demon. I only played a few hours of Demon's Souls a while back otherwise I am curious to see how the DS series will play compared to Bloodborne. I don't want to watch anything on Sekiro as I do intend on playing it eventually, but I'm curious to check out Maximilian Dood's playthrough as he is huge into Soulsborne stuff.

TWD Final Season episodes 1 - 3 grade: B+

Sekiro has its claws into me now. There was a point where I was doubting if it was for me. It’s probably the most flawed of From Software’s games the past 2 gens...minus maybe DS2. There will be cheap, unfair deaths. More than other Soulsbourne games. But once I got it (and by got it, I don’t mean being gud), it became gameplay crack. Yesterday I faced off against a mini boss for 5 hours. A f’n mini boss! Not even halfway through the game! However when I finally beat him, was one of the best gaming moments of the year. Game plays more like a rhythm game...or fighter. 9.5 right now. Hopefully it maintains this quality to the end.

Division dropped a bit. Still really good but not worthy of being in the 9’s as I would’ve rated it during the first 10 hours. Think the grounded nature of the game limits its potential to stay interesting. Great AI. Maybe the best this gen. Right now it sits at a 8.5.

Reminds me of Maximilian Dood playing Bloodborne. Can't remember the boss name but it was the electric beast you get to after being bagged. It took me like 4 times or so to beat him, while it took Max over an hour. Then again he was using a dex build so barely could do any damage. Fun to watch but I probably would have rage quit long before that mark, so I'll give you props for sticking with it.

Just Finished HellBlade: Senua's Sacrifice. Awsome game that just had me so hooked by the end. Looks like the set it up for a sequel.

Very different kind of game despite it's simplicity in mechanics and structure.

Combat has it's moments too, though you really have to listen to the voices( and act instantly) to know if someone off-screen is going to hit you, as the camera is just too close for combat against multiple opponents. That said, is there anything more satisfying than when you get a Parry? I also liked the fight with the beast.

Good stuff, and an amazing achievement by such a small team. It was longer than I expected as well.

Really dark and depressing though. I really appreciate the efforts in characterization. Senua was very convincing in performance and character writing. Loved it!

Finally got motivated to play Tomb Raider(2013) and I had a lot of fun with it. Not a huge game but I beat it in less than a week. Feels good to knock another one off the 360 list before they become too old to be referred to as "last gen".

Now I need to decide Dead Space 2, Metal Gear Revengance, Bioshock Infinite, Splintercell Blacklist, or one of the Crysis games.
