Mini-Review/Backlog Destruction Thread

Trying to get through Kingdom Hearts 3. I couldn't imagine playing this game if you suffer from epilepsy. Too many bright colors and actions.

Beat DmC on Game Pass which prompted me to buy and beat DMC5. 2 excellent games. Never played DMC games until this month. I’m a fan of the franchise now.

2/3rds of the way through Ninja Gaiden 2. That camera wasn’t good then. Aged horribly. Would be a really good game if not for the camera.

Now trying to figure out MK11. Really good production values for a fighting game. Haven’t tried to learn a fighter in nearly 2 decades. It shows.

Finally finished RDR2. Loved it. Watching through the credits to pretty much see a direct lead into the first Read Dead was great and sad know what it leads to.

I loved the whole sequence with John and trying start over. I really identified with that whole ordeal of trying to better yourself for the ones you love.

Incredible game.

120 hours in and I've come to the realization that I'll never get through AC: Odyssey.

Metro exodus, great graphics (except faces), good gameplay, good story so far. I don't seem do be able to play for more than an hour at a time though, it's exhausting for some reason idk.
Good game this far though.

Did you play the first two games?

What? Ok, now you're just trying to hurt me.

They are intense games though for sure.
They're great games, they just aren't great for longer play sessions, at least not for me. Playing an hour at a time seems to be the soft spot. Become a problem after a couple of weeks though, since there's usually some new release I seem to jump into.
Right now I'm playing shenmue 2, not sure I'll go back to metro for awhile I'm afraid.

Started playing Mirrors Edge Catalyst

How do you screw up wall running that much?? Dreadful

Major backlog attack!

I finally finished AC:Origins. Great game, but my gosh it was long. Too long. I had picked up the DLC dirt cheap too. I think I technically left a few main missions out there but I beat the big boss at the end.

What should I play next? I'm ready to get to the GOTY 2018 finalists!
-RDR2
-God of War
-Spider Man-AC:Odyssey (I'll obviously wait on this one a bit as I just finished Origins)
-Metro Exodus

I’m finally getting around to Stardew Valley on XB. They weren’t joking when they said this is like the old Harvest Moon. I’m loving this it is very addicting!

I recently "finished" rebel galaxy. Hard to put finite completion on a game so open and dynamic, but I got the main story out of the way. Good game, simple, but I like that a little more nowadays compared to the complex sims. I very much enjoyed the ship variety, even while wishing there were more. Customizing it with particular broadside cannons and automated weapons really makes it feel unique. Which makes the fact that you can't change a single color on the ship seem like a pretty huge omission. But oh well.

Now have been onto dungeon siege, an ancient party based sort of dungeon crawler where you basically just get revenge on the world for destroying your farm, merrily traipsing the countryside with your group and whacking wildlife and monsters with a variety of typical fantasy weapons and magic.

Finished Dragon Quest 11 on PC. Jeez this game is long. But the payoff was worth it. First of all it plays very much like an old school Jrpg complete with turn based action and in some place random encounters. There was a lot of grinding for levels especially toward the end. Story was really cliche until you get to the first ending then it really opens up a bit. Game had a bit of FF6 and Chrono Trigger mixed in. And yes there are 2 endings, one early-ish and one very late. But that final ending, the TRUE ending you get at the end makes it worth it. They managed to tie together timelines from multiple Dragon Quests games with this one. Very well done and thought out. Alot cleaner than how the Zelda games are so called connected.

Graphically it looked great. I switched back and forth between 4K and ultra wide (3440x1440) and both looked extraordinary.

Bottom line if you're a fan of old school JRPGs or Dragon Quest in general, this game will not disappoint. Just be ready to give it a bunch of time.

I may jump to that. I started RDR2 and honestly I am having trouble getting through it. I was afraid that the slow pace would bother me. I see that it is a good game, but it isn't necessarily a good game for me. Coming from AC was just bad too. In AC you can go as fast or slow as you want. RDR2 forces you into this slow pace (literally and figuratively).

Agreed! RDR is a very good game but can be very slow. Then when you hit the open world you could spend hours doing almost nothing, which is a good and bad thing. I eventually took a break and never went back.

My favorite game on your list is Odyssey, but Spider-Man is a close second so I recommend that because it’s probably not best to play Odyssey and Origins back to back!

Just started play Prey. I have to say based on my very first impression I'm not sure I'll even end up finishing it. Everything about it seems OK, and the enemies are just not fun to fight at all.

Finished Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. It shows why Naughty Dog is an elite developer. Their attention to details is one of their best traits. As for the game, standard Uncharted flair, which IMO never gets old. The banter/interaction with Chloe and Nadine was superb. I was curious with how Uncharted 4 ended, how they could potentially keep the series going. The lost legacy answers that quest well. Didn't hurt that the game is a looker graphically even 2 years after its release. Photo-mode most definitely got a work out.

My thoughts exactly, didn’t enjoy dealing with the enemies at all!

Here's what I'm playing now:

PS4: MLB: the show 19
X1: Mortal Kombat 11, Hand of Fate 2
Switch: Fire Emblem - 3 houses
PC: Rage 2, Halo Wars 2 DLC: awakening the nightmare

Finished Story mode for Mortal Kombat 11. Kronika has got to be one of the cheapest bosses in a fighting game EVER. Other than that the visuals were great and the gameplay pretty balanced. But Kronika is soooooooooo cheap.

Every time I try and get into RDR2 I just hit a wall. It is just soooooooo slloooooooooooooooooooooow. Walking around camp and trying to get a mission and get your horse out is just so frustrating. I get how it is more story driven and really trying to immerse you in, but I am not a patient gamer. The controls are goofy at times too, I don't know if I'm pointing a gun at someone to threaten them or shoot them. I shoot someone in the chest 3 times and they still just run up to me and punch me in the face? Every action that is fun ends up having negative consequences. Does this get better as it goes along? I think I'm just too much of an action oriented gamer for this.

I'm jumping into AC:Odyssey for now. In the opening mission of the game and I'm already killing :)

Just bought the neo geo mini, great fighters (last blade 2 is a gem imo) and slugs. The lcd looks terrific and it's fairly good to control with the stick. Looks okay connected to TV (not great but nowhere near as bad as reviews say) if used with the smoothing filter (which most say is bad? ). Honestly feel this have gotten way too harsh reviews. I've not been gaming much on neo geo cabs, but have a sega naomi with atomiswave games via netboot on an og arcade crt, playing snk vs capcom, neo geo bc, kof etc. and honestly there's nothing wrong with the neo geo mini running off a modern TV imo.
Got it with two joypads and they're great for fighters (although now microswitches), better than modern console controllers by miles.
Prob hack it for more neo geo games since there's a few I miss but otherwise I'm happy with the purchase.

Keep up the impressions of Odyssey, it’s my favorite game of this generation. Greece is such an amazing setting.

I made decent progress this weekend (got off the starting island) and I love it. While it isn't way different from Origins, there's a bunch of little improvements that really make the game better. The combat is improved significantly. I also really like the exploration mode. I thought it would be a little tedious, but I gave it a try and it is fun. It doesn't take long to find quests and objectives at all, and there's enough direction to give you all you need. I'm going slowly doing a lot of side quests. I like how everything scales to your level so even a simpler side quest is fun.

The stealth combat is still really great. There's nothing more fun than taking out an entire enemy base just sneaking around assassinating people.

I loved Origins and wasn't sure what they could to do top it, but they've done it. Odyssey would be my vote for 2018 GOTY by a wide margin.

The Sinking City

A fun if flawed game.

Good story
Interesting characters
Player choice
Multiple endings
Detective stuff works well
Good length (20hrs or so)

Rough around the edges
Way too much back and forth around the city
City not that interesting

7/10

Is this similar to Vampyr in regards to gameplay and such? And, if so, is it better or worse?

Glad you’re enjoying it! I still jump into the game all the time just because I love the world and gameplay so much. It’s great to switch combat styles too, I spent most of my time with a warrior build but switched it to a hunter build a few weeks ago. Really changes up the tactics.

I also agree about the quality of life improvements. Origins was already pretty user friendly but Odyssey takes it to a new level. Now is a great time to start playing too because they’ve patched a ton of stuff in since launch. My favorite additions have been the ability to customize the look of the gear and the ability to create saved loadouts.
