Mini-Review/Backlog Destruction Thread

Just finished Alice Madness Returns. The game's pacing feels a bit off at times and there a few repetitive sections, but overall it's a damn good game. The atmosphere is top notch, the combat feels good, and the platforming is perfect. Definitely recommend whether you've played American Mcgee's Alice or not. Really hoping there will be another iteration in this series one day.

Next up I'm going to finish up my Alan Wake lore by playing Alan Wake American Nightmare.

So Alan Wake American Nightmare was actually really fun (only played the story). I was expecting a cheap spin off but I enjoyed it a lot and though it was very short it was an interesting story. Now I'm all caught up on the AW lore and ready for 2!

Next up, my next stop on the Kingdom Hearts train is Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance.

Just some random thoughts:

As I have less time for game, one factor becomes more important. Enjoyment level/unit_time. Its significantly more important (to me) than other matrics like entertainment_value/unit_time (aka money spend vs hours of gameplay).

If you think about it, live concerts, even movies, they provide high cost/unit time. In many cases, you have to travel a distance to go to a live concert if you do not live near a major city. Because they return high entertainment level/unit time. Another example is a theme park. Queue an hour to get 5 mins of ride. BUt people do it as the rides are so Fking thrilling.

a lot of game-like to advertise with the number of hours. For me, as a decently financially person, cost isn't a major issue, in-game. I don't need a game with 100 hours, (nice to have if fun)., More important to me is how entertained I am when I play.

One reason I stopped playing elden ring, was I feel the amount of time I was having fun, vs when I am not, either when I kept dying, or when I am farming for exp to traversing (which to be fair not as bad as many *cough* Red dead 2*) is heavy to the latter.
Now contrast this with Tiny Tina Wonderlands, whey I spend most time shooting stuff, and picking up loot. If I happen to die, I get back into the heat of action very soon.

Yesterday evening,I play some V rising, which is the most hype Survival game after Valhiem. One boss is annoying & its like the game asked me to GTFO. 5-6 times, I almost beat him, & some s*** just will happened (which to be fair often my fault) like missed all my spells when he was like 2-5% of life....Like 1.2 hits from killing him or random mobs started attacking me. When you are "out of combat" with the bosses for like 10sec, the boss regen to FULL health! What made it double, making it triple annoying is you have to travel like 5 mins back to where he is, & hope the other mobs do not respawn yet, & its not day time (you will get killed by sunlight, as a Vamp), & you lose durability of gears if you died. SO finally like the 8th time or so, my gear broke, which result in not just losing stats on the gear, but level, & got killed, I uninstalled the game. Its so frustrating, as I like other aspects of the game, & the game concept, but when the unfun part overwhelmed the fun, I questioned continuing with it. People can laugh I am just lousy (not that I cared), but in the need, a game must be consistently fun.

In a way its like a bad relationship. Its awful most of the time, but you keep hanging on to it, due to the moments when it was great, & the idea eventualyl it will swap places.

Never had a more FU experience in any game. Elden ring doesn't even come close. The game hates me. the boss is less than 10% health, I will keep missing shots.....why.... I kept losing fight should have won, like the game say GTFO my game. I have played games for a long time, but never had this on one.

I actually uninstalled & reinstalled to give it a 2nd chance. I think I will uninstall it permanently. Each death, you lose durability & after a while you have to return to repair, & farm items to get the consumables repaired. The game is a test of your tolerance. Its a good tool for anger managerment. If you do not get angry playing, you pass anger management. YOu can out level, or ut gear bosses as well, as gears are tied to unlocking stuff, via well killing bosses.

Waste of my previous limited holiday playing the game.

I am playing Bioshock 2 remastered on PC (Bioshock collection Free on Epic store). It aged surprisingly well. The game must be a visual treat back in its days. But to be honest, it felt alot like Bioshock 1 DLC or 1.5. That was the reason I did not play when it was released initially, having played Bioshock 1.

Juggling multiple things right now.

On XSX: Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising and Sniper Elite 5, thank you very much gamepass. Both are really good games an polar opposites of each other which helps balance out switching between games. I will say this, Sniper Elite is really scratching that Splinter cell urge. If Rebellion decided to do a modern telling, Ubisoft will need to look over their shoulder.

On PC: Far Cry 6 and Vampire the Masquerade: Swansong. Again 2 very different games that are interesting in their own right.

On Switch : Nothing. My last game, Triangle Strategy while really good, was really long. Glad to give the Switch a break.

On PS5: Surprisingly nothing. The PS5 is my exclusives machine and I'm in holding mode right now. When God of War arrives that's a Day 1 purchase. I will get Horizon Forbidden West one day, more than likely in the fall during a price drop. The Final Fantasy 7 remake has rubbed me the wrong way and I don't know if I'm going back to it.

Is Vampire the Masquerade nice. It's a Vampire detective game right?

Have been playing Astral Chain for a bit now but had to give it up. Game mechanics way too convoluted honestly and just not that fun like Nier or Bayonetta.

Just finished Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance today. While it's probably one of my least favorite KH games, I still enjoyed it and like where the story is headed with only two games left.

Before those though I'm going back to a game I started playing basically at launch, played it for maybe an hour, then forgot about it for 8 years - Ryse: Son of Rome.

Ryse Son of Rome is a pretty fun game. A bit repetitive, sure, but it's short enough that it didn't overstay its welcome.

Next up I'm playing Call of Cthulhu. I've heard it's not that great of a game but I like anything Lovecraftian so I'm giving it a play.

Ryse was definitely a fun game. I wouldn't mind a sequel.

I don't care what the internet thinks, Call of Cthulhu was a great game. Maybe it's just because I'm super into Lovecraftian stuff but I loved every bit of that game. I liked how they combined a number of different Lovecraft elements into it, the story was interesting, the 3 endings I unlocked were all good, and I liked how most of the achievement names were direct references to Lovecraft stories.

Next up, back to KH with Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage. Just this one and 3 and I'm fully through the series.

I am super sick since Wed, & literally, working through the sickness. I suspect covid but test neg. Bad headaches for 2 days. Today was better but my throat is still rough.
When I get better, I maybe start some new game again

I was debating between getting a game (Desperados 3) on Xbox or on Steam (both platforms have it on sale currently), then decided to check if Epic has it for cheaper.

Epic showed that I already own it - turns out I bought it last December.

FACEPALM

Finished Kingdom Hearts 0.2 - Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage in about 3.5 hours. Was a nice little segue into Kingdom Hearts 3.

Before that though I'm taking a KH break and playing Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Finished Wolfenstein The New Order today. Great game. I'm not really that into shooters but this felt really good and had an interesting enough story with a good ending that makes me excited to play New Colossus.

Before that though, playing a small game that I wanted to play for a while and is currently on Game Pass: Contrast.

Contrast was quick and easy. Got stuck maybe two times and I don't even think they were on the "harder" puzzles. Enjoyed it though. It was interesting and the atmosphere was good. Cool surprise twist at the end.

For some reason a bunch of achievements that I got aren't unlocking on it though, so that kind of soured the third act for me. But hoping they are just delayed.

Next up I'm playing Batman Arkham City. Played Asylum about about 2.5 years ago and really liked it but never got around to playing any other entries.

I just started New order last week. Its a free game on Epic store so why not. The dual guns is clucky & I never use. The loading is atrociously long & annoying especially after you died & wanted to get back to the game. No happening a lot but annoying when happened. It also use annoying check poit system, but most time, the checkpoint ain't far. The 2nd game (New colosem or something), which I played first, has a better, traditional save pount system when you can save when you like, & multiple files, which I Far prefer & loaded faster.

It is the German version of the game, as oppose to the International version, where the good guys speak German, & fighting the reigme (Swastika & reference to Nazi are banned) .

Game is pretty decent & I think it maybe better than the 2nd game, at least so far .

I never used the dual wields either. Either I wasn't good at it or just didn't feel right.

I didn't notice any issues with load times though - I actually thought they were quite fast.

Finished Batman Arkham City today. Really good game. Improves in just about every category from Asylum in my opinion, and I really enjoyed Asylum. My one complaint is they went way overboard with Riddler trophies, etc. In asylum I went through and found every one but in City there's just too many and some of the challenges are way too hard. But not a big deal all things considered.

Now after about 1.5 years of working my way through the series I'm finally at the beginning of the end as I play Kingdom Hearts 3 next. Super excited about this one.

I did not manage far with Arkham CIty. I think some of the "optional challenges" are too hard & the frustration push me off playing the game., I know they are optional, but as someone that like 100%, it push me off. On hintsight, I could ignore them, the train already left. My 360 was in my basement collecting dust.
