Monster Hunter: World

How were the monster battles? From watching videos they don't seem good. They look like you just go all out on a dumb monster..no dynamism, intelligence or even varity between one fight and another.

It also sounds like the hunt becomes trivial thanks to high level flies that basically take you straight to the target.
You have to dodge or use a shield. I would say the combat is similar to Dark Souls. If you just stand there; you'll die. You can set traps, buff your team. All sorts of stuff to enhance the fight. I've lost track of the monsters a few times, because they'll retreat.

Also, everyone had a choice of pre-set armor and over a dozen of weapons. Starting from scratch, you'll have to craft your equipment and weapons from the hunts you go on. So there's a decent progression that's huge in the game.

This was a beta, so not sure how helpful the scout flies will be. Not sure if some creatures are easier to hunt than others. From what I heard, in other MH games, a fight can last up to 40 minutes. I'm new to this game, so can't speak from experience.

I liked what I played.

I've heard lots of prep work needs to go into your hunt and potentially a lot of tracking. I found it hard to judge how hard the actual fights were based on the videos i've seen.

It's great when you are in a fight with one monster and another jumps in. Then the 2 of them go at it. We had our one monster hauled away by a flying monster. :)

If you are in the jungle area; there are these cats that will jump down and temporarily tie the monster down for you to swing on. Not sure if that happens automatically or if there's a way to trigger it.

Also, the beta had 3 pre-defined quests. Not sure if that's how the game usually plays or not. I do know there were at least 2 other monsters that were not in the quest, but could be targeted for a fight. Actually, all creatures can be fought, but these were the larger ones.

The combat felt a bit too loose to me. The controls weren't as responsive as I would have liked. But I really didn't know what I was doing which most likely added that feeling. I was able to button mash my way through the first hunt but the second and third hunts I couldn't get through, I ran out of time. I don't like timed missions and I hope that's something that is adjusted for the retail version. I'm happy to say that when I messed with different weapons it was great so see they have have very different attacks.

I'm leaning towards the XBX version because I thought it would be the prettiest. But if you guys are going PS4 I can do that too. :txbcool:

I've always been interested in these games, but have never played one. I'll probably pick it up too if several people from here get it.

I stuck with the hunter's bow. Supposedly it's best to change weapons based on the creature; however, I joined matches where I assumed there would be heavy attacks. I felt mostly in control of what I was doing. I think it's just a matter of getting use to combos.

I was first thinking PS4 because it would be the heaviest used via States and Japan, plus any quests completed netted you some inventory that carries over from the beta. Plus, the beta was brought to PS4 and just thought it would be the better optimized out of all the platforms (just guessing). However, I'm up for either. XBox is my primary console. Not sure when it will come out for PC, so I'm not holding out for that.

Giant Bomb has a preview of the beta, here. You can probably start it at the 16 minute mark.

First review is out. 39/40 from Famitsu. Take it with a grain of sea salt, since Famitsu is a Japanese publication and tends to be overly generous with their scoring.

Some review highlights (from resetera):

* 50-60 hours to reach the ending. Lots of replay value after that.
* Massive increase in the feeling of presence. Lots of QoL changes make it a more comfortable experience. Truly worthy of being called the next generation Monster Hunter.
* The seamless areas keep you in the action, without interruptions.
* The pacing of the action has been increased.
* A wide range of information, from weapon trees to monster weakpoints and parts that can be broken can now all be checked in-game, making it much easier even for new players to start the game.
* Scoutflies are revolutionary.
* The areas spread out in all directions, there's always more things to find or see.
* The story has a strong, solid through line.
* Definitely a game for cat lovers.
* It also includes systems that series' fans can dig down deeper into.

I thought they would do the last beta for the XBox as well at least...Sony paid some good money to get beta exclusive on this one lol...

Anyone playing the beta this weekend on PS4 and want to coop? If so, message me or reply here. I plan on checking it out once more this weekend.

Did you play much of the beta? Any more impressions? We should start getting the reviews this week.

How long is the beta available? I might check it out.

No, never had the chance. I'll be checking out the reviews and see how XBox compares to PS4.

91 on MC after 40 reviews

Seems to be reviewing quite well. Some complaints about an annoying/overly complicated party system but that seems the worst complaint about it. I'm looking forward to this. Roll on tomorrow.

Damn these reviews. I wasn't planning on getting it any time soon considering my ridiculous backlog, now I'm not so sure.

I have no self control.

I have no self control.

I was not expecting the reviews to be as good as they are to be honest. Tomorrow can't come soon enough now.

I didn't know there's a single player campaign or what looks like one.

Wow, 91? I didn't expect it to be that high. I'll have to take a closer look.

Yeah, I've heard that the cat becomes your companion.

Yeah, I've heard that the cat becomes your companion.

The cat is like an AI companion that you can customzie to give you buffs. I think you have it if you play solo or co-op.

No campaign? Well I guess I will pass on this game.
