Monster Hunter: World

No campaign? Well I guess I will pass on this game.

There is a story quest line and a ton of side missions. It can be played solo or in co-op. What exactly do you mean by campaign?

Just like the campaign in Gears of War, Call of Duty, etc. I didn't want to have to rely on other players to play the game.

I don't think co-op is mandatory in this but certain monsters will be easier to defeat in a group I guess.

Definitely looks good. No time to play it now which doesn't matter since the PC version isn't out until later this year.

It's a drop in/out type of campaign. You can play solo and ignore all of our requests to play with you.

I'm picking it up with no idea why other than I can either say I tried it and hated it, or get all loved up like the rest of the internet.

I asked about this on Resetera, and the answer I got from several people was that you could play the game either SP or MP. It's the same game either way -- same storyline, same quests, same upgrade paths, same dialogs, same weapons, same areas, same everything. The only difference is that in MP, you're playing co-op with other people, and in SP, you're playing co-op with an AI kitty cat.

So, no, there isn't a separate SP campaign mode like in Gears or CoD. It's the same game either way. You do not have to rely on others to play the game. You don't even have to be online.

Nice. That works!

Took the plunge. It's downloading as I work today.

I'll still dabble in Sea of Thieves this weekend, but start MHW.

I’m enjoying it so far. Seems very deep in terms of what you can do. Tons of upgrades, customizations, tools, equipment etc. some reviews were saying you needed a 12 digit code to play with friends. I think that’s gone now. You can lock a party behind a code so only friends can join but I don’t think you need them. That said I haven’t tried online yet.

Also saw you can shoot a flare. This will allow outsiders to join in and help. On the other side, you can go into the menu somewhere (haven't played) and look for distressed users and what they are combating. So if you are looking for a particular monster you can help them while getting what you need after defeating the creature.

How's the performance?

Please keep the impressions coming guys. I had fun with the beta and this was to be a day 1 purchase for me. But I’m currently hooked on something else so I have to push this game’s purchase back a little bit.

Its really good to read that Capcom did not make any drastic changes or compromises to appeal to a wider audience. There is a youtube reviewer that I really like who did a great review. He goes by the name ACG. Anyway, he went on to describe this as a looter like Diablo. That its very much a hamster wheel where you go out to find monsters to craft new gear so you can go out and fight more powerful monsters for even better gear. I’m a big fan of that type of gameplay loop. There is something about that type of progression that really appeals to me.

Excellent. I have an x1x and it gives you three different options. I had it set up max graphics but then swapped it to frame rate performance and it’s much better with that setting, especially with the combat timings you need to use.

Capcom on the critic upswing lately. Here's hoping it translates to the sales they need to MAKE ME A NEW OR REMASTERED POWERSTONE YOU ANUSES

Just saw all the reviews. Wow! Never played a Monster Hunter game but became a Soulsbourne addict and the gameplay I've seen in the Monster Hunter videos looks like it would appeal to that type of gamer. Looks like I'll be buying it this week.

So after 20 hours - the game is a lot of fun but if you don’t like the loot upgrade rinse and repeat mechanic of these type of MMOs, this is not the game for you. Because that’s all it is in a nutshell. That said the environments are absolutely gorgeous and the monsters are without doubt the stars of the show. Each large monster I’ve come across behaves differently, fights in its own way and reacts uniquely. They’ve always put a lot of time into the creatures and it shows.

The upgrade system is relatively straight forward, kill dinosaur to get pieces and upgrade your weapon. You need to do bounties to get armour upgrades and at no time those the game tell you this so it took me a while to figure that out.

There are no classes. Just weapon load outs. And you can swap between them with ease and without restriction. Equally you and remove upgrade parts from one weapon and apply them to another for MOST weapons, but not all. So be careful there when you upgrade a weapon and look for the warning that says the upgrade can’t be undone. I have no idea why a few weapons can’t have their upgrades rolled back. It’s a silly way to do things. No armor upgrades can be rolled back. They are all permanent.

Multiplayer is a mess on Xbox. The SOS flare system, which you need for the story missions and free roam does not work at all on Xbox. Capcom acknowledged this on Friday and have been silent ever since. Investigations and Events can be played in co op as long you setup a squad - which has its own hub that again, the game doesn’t tell you about. I won’t even begin to try and type out the process needed to get a co op game going because tedious doesn’t even come close. I’ll just say to say it’s easier to get a multiplayer session in a single player game than it was trying to get co op going in this over the weekend. And that’s very disappointing because basically the entire game is meant to be played in co op. That said these are problems that Capcom can actually fix so there is that.

Hey - Anyone's X1X's fan rev up during cutscenes?

I think it's time I gave MS a call. It's borderline annoying.

Not once did the fan make a peep during Sea of Thieves.

Define ‘rev up’ ? My fan switches on for this game sometimes (could be cut scenes, I’ll check later) but it stays at the same rate. It does the same for PUBG as well. Other games it doesn’t switch on at all.

Like a whooshing sound. Noticeably louder. Can hear it over the game, in fact. It's only for a second then quickly dies down.

No I don’t think I’ve heard anything that loud. When it switches on it’s noticeable but that’s only because it doesn’t make a sound otherwise.

It's only a few select games. I'll give them a call tonight to see if it's of any concern.

Let me know what they say. I’ve seen a few threads here now with complaints about the fan suddenly kicking in.

5 million shipped. That beats any other MH entry lifetime sales, and in one week. Of course, that's shipped, not sold, but presumably those copies will sell through. The positive critical and fan reception should help. Off to a very good start.

OH BOY, another Japanese developer drop the ball on xbox matchmaking but the PSN working. Sound like home court advantage to me.
