I don't really pay much attention to Cable TV shows, but someone recommended this to me and I think it's really cool. It's basically about a loner who does tech security during the day but on his own time is a hacker vigilante. I know the lone computer geek is kind of a TV Trope, but I think this is a good spin on it and the character Elliot is well rounded despite being an emotional mess.

At this point, I'll say that despite the title, this show has nothing to do with Robots lol. Mr. Robot is the alias or username for a character played by Christian Slater who slowly approaches Elliott to recruit him to a cause that is a mix of Occupy Wall St. and Anonymous.

The show is grounded in lots of computer security lingo and I give them credit for now trying to dumb down this stuff. They freely toss around tech terms like DNS, DDOS, Tor, Gnome, KDE, or Linux which many average viewers probably have no clue what that means.

As for Mr. Robot, he comes across as the computer geek equivalent to Tyler Durden. He wants to crash or reset the world economy starting with the company Elliot is a contractor for.

I think the first episode is still on USA's website is anyone wants to check this out.

He comes across like Tyler Durden is a good way to describe what's going on in that show is all I'll say.

Is season 2 happening soon? Show started to get a bit wild for me towards the end but I'd like to watch a bit more I guess.

The first rule of fSociety is you don't talk about fSociety. lol

I was a little suprised they went down the Fight Club route, but maybe there will be another spin on it as Eliot lost days and woke up in Tyrel's car and even Mr. Robot doesn't seem to know what happened during that time based on that trailer.

Also, even though fSociety's Hack succeeded, Evil Corp seems indifferent to it and I think White Rose it's looking to take advantage of the whole situation.

I think Season 2 comes out July 13th. Looking forward to it.

Downloading it now. I've heard clients talking about it a fair bit, but I had no idea what it was about until seeing this thread.

I think it's like, they gave Salander from the millennium books her own show,.but made him a dude... shall find out soon!

Watch this show. It's great.

If you are looking for a new show, do yourself a favor and watch it!

That man guy is a dream boat too. (In a 'michael Jackson and Demi Moore gave birth to a meth addict' kind of way!

On episode 4 of season 2, and I have to say... this season is s***.

I feel like I'm wasting my time.

Season 2 was weird and frustrating because Elliot holds up everything trying to fight or control Mr. Robot.

When Elliot imagines his better future including the toppling of E-corp, that is actually a tease of Mr. Robot's intentions.

Minor Spoilers:

You might also want to stick with the show because of Whiterose. This character holds a lot back, but I think the show is setting them up as some major part of Season 3. Whiterose holds power over Evil Corp and threatens their CEO over a project they need to keep running and funding. Also, they don't show why, by Whiterose convinces Angela to join sides despite the fact it may have been Whiterose's project that had been poisoning people.

Personally, I've stuck with the show because it features a lot of Cyber Security and Hacking stuff that I studied in college and I just enjoy seeing it presented this way. They avoid making computer hacking look like a video game or dumbing it down.

I almost missed the bit after the credits at the end of season 1 with white rose!

I'll keep watching it, but talk about a disappointment.

Season 1 was tight. Each scene felt narratively important or progressive.

Now... it's all contained. I feel like these 5 episodes could have been 1-2 episodes, tops.

Whiterose is the Time Obsessed person Elliot talks to in Season 1. I hope there isn't confusion on that.

There is a lot of uncertainty about this character. I think they're doing horrible things with good intentions behind some mystery project. They're only partnered with E-corp out of convenience.

I'm also wondering if Mr. Robot already knows Whiterose's goal, but is keeping Elliot in the dark. It might be bigger than just destroying E-corp, but about what comes after.

I'm also not sure whether Whiterose is speaking figuratively or literally here and if this is teasing a major plot twist.

"Have you ever wondered how the world would look if the 5/9 Hack had never happened?" says Zhang, speaking with Dom DiPierro (Grace Gummer), a mid-level FBI agent deeply entrenched in the investigation into the hack. "In fact, some believe there are alternate realities playing out that very scenario, with other lives we're leading, and other people that we've become. The contemplation moves me very deeply."

So Elliot seems to have a schizo thing seeing and sometimes being controlled by Mr. Robot. We have a potential villain here with their own double identity as Minister of Security for China and Mastermind of the Dark Army Hackers while also being obsessed with Time and different life paths. I dunno, maybe it's nothing and their both just crazy.

Bitch looks good in a wig at any rate.

I'm sure he'll be a part of the next big twist though.

Elliots sister is the star of the show in my mind at the moment.

The entire concept of the show is fascinating though. Debt isn't a tangible thing. Much like the stock market. It's rediculous that a mythical thing can ruin so many people's lives.

Themes like this are why I'm sticking with this show.

“Money talks” because money is a metaphor, a transfer, and a bridge. Like words and language, money is a storehouse of communally achieved work, skill, and experience. Money, however, is also a specialist technology like writing; and as writing intensifies the visual aspect of speech and order, and as the clock visually separates time from space, so money separates work from the other social functions. Even today money is a language for translating the work of the farmer into the work of the barber, doctor, engineer, or plumber. As a vast social metaphor, bridge, or translator, money—like writing—speeds up exchange and tightens the bonds of interdependence in any community. It gives great spatial expansion and control to political organizations, just as writing does, or the calendar."

Also, early on in the show, Elliot often says he wants to save people from 'The Invisible Hand.'. I keep thinking this is a nod to Adam Smith and The Wealth of Nations. I also think Smith's idea of the Invisible Hand of the economy is widely misunderstood.

Videodrome that quote by Marshal McLuhan is brilliant.

Affluenza is contagious, and when you look at consumerism as a hate of keeping your own wealth, acknowledging people's pursuits for objects, as well as their determination to endebt themselves for s***, it becomes disdaining.

But I do like nice shoes.

Stuff like this makes me think the Economy should have much in common with Ecosystems or even Ecology. At least in terms of how Ecology in nature can be seen to be about finding balance in contrast to 'Human Ecology' or our economy which is widely out of balance.

As both Cosmopolis and Mr. Robot allude to, something must happen to bring things back to balance or harmony and the players who caused the imbalance in the first place must suffer the most in the process.

Youre a Marxist! Be careful with those words! ;)

Actually, I'll suggest both Marx and Smith could influence this show.

I think a key part of Marx was that any revolution must come from the Proletariat. I don't think this has ever happened. Marxism or Communism has been ironically implemented by the arrogant Bourgeois like Lenin on behalf of the Proletariat in past revolutions.

However thanks to hacking, the Proletariat can be empowered to cause such a revolution as is being attempted by fSociety in Mr. Robot. This is also a strange nod to Marx when it's revealed where those Masks come from.
