MS and Sony to explore ‘strategic partnership’

I share this level of excitement, but for different reasons. I liked this video, but there is a major omission with his theory that Microsoft is teaming up with Sony to combat Nintendo's forthcoming dominance. It's actually kind of laughable, to me. Never mind the fact that Microsoft already has laid down a sort of half-public partnership with Nintendo, already. Frankly, it's a little immature that a lot of people have had SO much trouble coming to terms with the fact that: IT'S NOT ABOUT HOW MANY CONSOLES SOLD! It hasn't actually been about that for a pretty long time. Why is it so 15 years ago for so many gamers and half the media, still? The OG Wii was HUGE! How does this equate to software sales, let alone subscription models? It doesn't. These two companies are not threatened by Nintendo anymore than they were 15 years ago. They are doing fine. In fact, both are making huge profits and everything is quite harmonious competing alongside Nintendo... for now.

The real threat here is 100% Google Stadia! Make no mistake. That is what this is about. The stakes are getting much higher for all three console makers right now. It's about to soon be Team Microsoft and Team Google... Wait, I hear rumblings of a Team Amazon. If you don't understand this, you aren't seeing the big picture of what's really going on.

So, looking back at it, "the power of the cloud" is just another timed exclusive. Womp womp, Microsoft.

More better? TAKE IT BACK! lol

I'm not a fan of all the cloud talk but if MS has a set up and both companies see it as mutually beneficial I guess they had no reason not to do it. Depending on the deal this basically removes any cloud "advantage" MS may have had next gen but we'll see.

So.."power of teh cloudz lolz" or "now Microsoft is giving away their advantage"...Which is it? It can't be both.

This seems like very anti console war news that somehow is trying to spun as the opposite. Pretty obvious its good for both.

Google Stadia? You mean that service that has more latency than a 1980s modem?

In return, I hope Microsoft gets to access Sony's animation studios and cinematic technologies. Lol

Yeah that Google Stadia was a shot across the bow. Even if you think streaming is not the future. Amazon I am still not sure about. I don't know what they have up their sleeves.

It's the backing behind it that is the threat. Your correct though, the technology behind it will suck until they figure out how to make it not suck. :)

Sony animation kinda sucks, but I’m referring to the studio/film side :p ms/343 did get ahold of the studios and cameras for both scenes and faces that were used in Avatar with both halo 4 and 5. Would be nice if the slipspace engine and other tech gets spreader around the new studios they’ve acquired...they’ll probably get more help from the coalition and rare since they use the unreal engine

I don't believe there is much there in the near term myself that's why I put advantage in quotes, that was aimed more at people who keep insisting that was going to be some big advantage.

Good, end the console warz.

These companies can work together to bring the gaming community together no matter what console you prefer.

You're a living a dream world. Console Wars were fabricated by gamers and they will always find something to War over.

Not to be a jerk but they already work together in other areas, MS is more of a service company than anything else and they'd be silly to not sell services to a company that does so well in the gaming market even if they are competitors. MS could continue to do well but not likely grow much or do just as well and make money off of Sony too, it's kind of a no brainer really, same reason they are allowing some games to release on switch. That's not to say Sony isn't benefiting as well, whatever this cloud stuff ends up being (hasn't really been worth a crap yet and it has been talked about since at least 2013) buying services from MS means they don't have to build out everything themselves so it's likely the cheaper way to go. This is just two companies doing business in a mature way.

In reality this is another partnership between the two and gaming isn't the focus
For MS it's expanding the Azure cloud, for Sony it's expansion of tech and AI. THEY WON'T BE TRADING TLOU 2 AND GEARS 5 OR ANYTHING.

I knew this was going to happen in this field. MS once again ahead of the competition. Years ahead.

I can hear the explosion of Sony heads popping left and right! 🤣🤣🤣

Sony and Microsoft have been have been in partnership for years it's called "Blue Ray Association."

Azure cloud get a tone hype but hasn't proven anything.

You are clearly wrong because I work in the IT field and this is a must to have a really good infrastructure. MS cloud gets used far more than what you know.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...microsoft-blindsided-its-own-playstation-team

(Bloomberg) -- When Sony Corp. unveiled a cloud gaming pact with archrival Microsoft Corp., it surprised the industry. Perhaps no one was more shocked than employees of Sony’s PlayStation division, who have spent almost two decades fighting the U.S. software giant in the $38 billion video game console market.

Last week, the companies announced a strategic partnership to co-develop game streaming technology and host some of PlayStation’s online services on the Redmond-based company’s Azure cloud platform. It comes after PlayStation spent seven years developing its own cloud gaming offering, with limited success.

Negotiations with Microsoft began last year and were handled directly by Sony’s senior management in Tokyo, largely without the involvement of the PlayStation unit, according to people familiar with the matter. Staff at the gaming division were caught off-guard by the news. Managers had to calm workers and assure them that plans for the company’s next-generation console weren’t affected, said the people, asking not to be identified discussing private matters.

The company’s other online game service and main cash cow, PlayStation Network, enables multiplayer matches of games running on PlayStation 4 consoles. For now that is still hosted by the other giant of cloud computing: Amazon Web Services. Sony and Amazon held talks last year for a deeper collaboration on cloud gaming, but couldn’t agree on commercial terms, according to a person familiar with the matter. That led to Sony’s discussions with Microsoft, the person said. Amazon is currently developing its own cloud gaming service, the Information reported last year.

Streaming itself is unproven. The cloud itself is no different. C3 is a bad demonstration of the cloud. And the last time we saw cloud streaming it was laughable. The control latency was horrible

Azure cloud get a tone hype but hasn't proven anything.

As of 2016, 85% of the Fortune 500 companies were using Azure. It's not proven in the gaming world, perhaps, but it's clearly the second-most leveraged cloud platform behind Amazon's AWS (which had a seven year head start) and growing at a faster pace than AWS did at the same point in its lifecycle.

It could have been, though. MS just did nothing with it.
