MS Not Done Purchasing, New Devs?

Seeing how they have grown over the years I would say no.

They got paid well for those projects

Growing now yeah but its been a rough stretch going back to the back half of last gen. Its going to be good but lets now pretend they just had a bad year or two. Its not just about their image. They were just straight up doing a poor job.

Oh yeah won't be remedy but people keep acting like they had a falling out which isn't true at all.

And xbox was still in a rough place even QB came out. Taken a few years to get rid of the stink caused by the announcement and launch.

Saying it's not a good move and that MS seemed fine letting them go doesn't mean they had a falling out it just means their business relationship didn't work out. We'll have to agree to disagree on the timetable, 2016 was well beyond the "stink" imo, it was the year after Halo 5 launched and was the same year that Gears 4 launched.

Microsoft as a publisher has been in rough shape for about 10 years

The Remedy/MS partnership might not have been good for MS but it was probably even worse for Remedy.

It hurt them when it comes to name recognition and building an audience but they also have to blame themselves though for having poor direction, no way you should only have two games out in a 10 year period, Naughty Dog released all four mainline uncharted games and TLOU in a 10 year span.

Yeah, they did get paid well. It was Remedy's idea to incorporate a television show. Looking at Control and back at Quantum Break, It looks like they got to do what they wanted creatively.

I think they just reIeased the game too soon. This was MS's fault. It was a bad idea to release it against Red Dead Redemption and have no real marketing push. They even made it sound like it wasn't an Xbox exclusive experience either which killed alot of its buzz at the time. The game ( to this day) has visual glitches which should've been ironed out before they released it. And If they would've had Control's way of management of Jack's powers it would've made the game stand out more. Quantum Break had an awesome story and stilll looks amazing, way better than Control. It had alot of potential to become a hit.

Alan Wake release date was set first. RDR got bought forward late on but MS should had still advertised it.
Remember reading Remedy were a bit unhappy their "good friends" decided to go up against them.

But then it was Remedy that decided to do the Bright Falls live action stuff.

Alan Wake needed to be released, they announced it with pics and a trailer at E3 2005 and I don't think pushing it back would have made a ton of difference, maybe a stronger advertising campaign would have helped a bit but at some point you just have to get the game out, a lot of people who were initially hyped for the game that they announced had lost interest, when you announce too early and have to make a ton of cuts/sacrifices to the game it's hard to keep people interested. Also RDR was delayed not brought forward, not sure if that was a typo but the game wasn't originally scheduled for May it was supposed to come out in April.

You can't release the game the same day RDR. Push it forward or push t back. It makes no difference.

The game was sent to die

There were in rough shape for almost 10 years. It’s a different company now than it was in 2016...but so is Remedy. Just bad timing.

Control didn't even make the top 20 selling games on NPD last month, yes it came out late in the month but most of it's sales would have been in the first few days and there wasn't much competition, hell GTAV is in the top 3. They are not a studio that's going to be worth picking up, you guys can keep saying you want it all you want but it's a waste of resources.

Control is a good game and was well received by the gaming community for the most part. I feel the advertising left alot to be desired and in the end, it came back to bite Remedy and 505 in the ass.

I'm still a firm believer that Remedy would do quite well under the Microsoft umbrella. Those marketing dollars would make all the difference in how well Remedy games are received. That's not mentioning GP.

Didn’t Sony have marketing rights to Control?

Sounds like the perfect game for Game Pass. It’s well received and scored by gamers and GP would give it more light.

They do. But people sounded excited to dive into Control, so I don't think Remedy expected the game not to chart in top 20 like that. I didn't. I read Man of Medan hit #19.
With the game on PC, PS4 and Xbox day one, I am very surprised it didn't chart.

What keeps happening with Remedy continues to be terrible timing and luck. Control would’ve been perfect for Game Pass. Remedy has had the unfortunate luck of their publishers mishandling marketing and promotion. 505 just isn’t big enough to help sell a $60 dollar game on any kind of scale. Microsoft has both bad mindshare and bad marketing when QB released. Alan Wake released up against Red Dead which again proved that the people at Microsoft struggle in knowing how to sell a good product.

Remedy either needs Sony’s top of class marketing and promotion for single player games or Game Pass. I’m fine with either. They’re a talented developer who makes distinct game worlds. I beat Control and thoroughly enjoyed it. A game with a AA budget had one of the best levels and 10 minute segments of gaming all generation mixed into a world with great lore. After beating it, I’ve changed my tune on Remedy. I’d really like to see Microsoft go after them so that Remedy can cross over all 3 of their game worlds (as they all seem to tie back to Alan Wake). I think they’d catch on in Game Pass with better timed releases.

I think they'd also probably be really good at making episodic games for Gamepass. Or whatever the hell else they want to do, of course, but Alan Wake in particular was like you were binge-playing episodes rather than a complete game ("Previously, on Alan Wake ... "). It would let them put more into the story as well, since instead of needing to ship an entire game at once and having to ration out what they have across the entire game world, they can focus on a really good segment of gameplay and then load up whatever story asides they want to go with it (be it Night Springs/Threshold Kids stuff or live TV/Dr. Darling video stuff or pages from an unwritten book or unwritten play).

But yeah, they'd also be good with Sony, where they could just take however long they wanted, release a solid single player story game that you play once and are done with, and fit right in - and maybe then actually get the accolades that seem to coincide with that.

I just don't think they are worth picking up, they haven't had a hit since the first max payne, you can't coast on a single success forever, especially one that long ago. If they have a lot of talent those people will get jobs when and if the studio closes, MS likely got most of the studios they did buy for a relatively cheap price and that was a good move if they were looking to buy several studios, buy small and build up. Sony probably paid as much for Insomniac as MS did for 3 or 4 of the studios they picked up, Insomniac is roughly 275 employees and just released a 13 million selling title. Being that Remedy is over 200 themselves I would guess they could be more expensive to pick up than any of the other studios MS has purchased so far, I just can't see them seeing a value in that kind of acquisition.

And another plane has AS-XGST instead of AS-XGSB. Could be reading too much into it?

Funny thing is when control was announced it was 'great' for Remedy because their games would sell much better with Playstation gamers....

Not at all. Would you really compare its marketing to Sony's own games?

they did push Destiny and COD pretty hard... my younger cousins at the time didn’t know they were on Xbox.

I’ll be honest the only time I see any video game marketing, that’s not a media or of an influencer related push, on YouTube ads.

Sometimes I forget certain games are out 😝

Maybe Sony only goes big when they feel it’s worthy (ie triple A third party games)?
