Official Thread New PC Hardware Discussion. POST YOUR RIG/SETUP.

RGB, Red Green Blue right?

Pulsating light show.

A silly thing that was probably cool at the start, but if everyone is doing it why is it a thing still?

Why not have other stuff be RBG in the room, aside from the computer>? And keep the focus on the computer being reliable and better than ever?

I could RBG up my entire room and the computer doesn't need to be involved. But then I also have black-out drapes on my window.

I can't do much with my PC at this point.

So asking for some advice, should I update my main drive from a Samsung 960 EVO 250GB to a 970 EVO+ 1TB?

I want to, but can't be arsed to figure out how to swap everything fairly seamlessly. Anyone have any advice there?

the 970+ is on sale, once it's gone I'm stuck. I feel like I should go for it.

How do you transfer everything? I do have two m.2 sockets on my MB.

Install the drive in the second slot. Clone the main drive to it using Partition Wizard, or I believe that Samsung has some software also.. After cloning you can swap the new drive into the other M2 slot or just change the boot order so the new drive boots first. If it were me, I would swap them around and get an enclosure for the old drive and have a nice extra usb hard drive.

Hmmm, ok.

I kind of want to do a clean install of Windows 11 on the new drive and then transfer over some stuff from my current boot drive.

Thing is I have a Windows 10 license but upgraded to Windows 11 when it was free to do so.

Not sure how that will work out?

I probably should grab this 1TB 970+ because yah, that basically the end of what my motherboard can support. Anything going forward is going to need to be backwards compatible, which probably means no benefit whatsoever.

When I clean installed Win 11 I believe I used my Win 10 key and it worked.

Yeah sounds like it should work.

Man, a lot of preparation and thinking before you go swap your main drive and do a clean OS re-install.

So yeah, I bought the 970 EVO plus 1TB, nothing wrong with my 250GB 860? ( I don't even know if that's what it is)

Blazing fast. But figure with the 970 on sale, and this being about as good as I can do with the motherboard I'm on, might as well.

I also love a fresh OS installation, get rid of all the bloat you've accumulated, and it's fun if you're a computer nerd of any degree.

Here is my WFH setup. I dont game so I just have a Dell XPS 8940. I need something that will run Autocad well. I could have built a better on cheaper but I didnt have time for that when I needed it. I may build a new one at some time, but this one performs well for me. I have my corporate laptop on the right that I use to access the back end of our document tracking system. Its a Dell Vostro with an I7. Nice laptop...Im really surprised they sprung for a good laptop like that. Could be that Im the only person in this billion dollar company that can manage our system properly.. They wont let me access the VPN on a personal machine unfortunately...
I have a Keychron K4 that I can use with both machines. I use a g604 mouse between the 2 machines also.

Lol, I just dont have time anymore. I always have projects around the house or the wife and I are in the mountains..
I hear ya. I am 90% of the way there it seems. Maybe 80% in the winter and like 95% in the summer.

But I will say, that is a clean setup you have and an excessive (but necessary) number of screens and computers you have there. Only thing you are missing is a Mac product :)

Huh, the main drive swap isn't working, and I got s*** to do so put the old stuff back in and nice to be back online.

I'll figure it out later. It can't ever be simple can it?

Did you clone the drive? very specific, you dont want to just copy things..

I couldn't get anything to work as far as doing a windows 11 install on the new drive.

It would get to 25% just setting it up, and nothing after.

Not sure how I got to this point, but noticed Samsung Magician can migrate your data (OS, everything) from one drive to the next.

So I just went with that. Took around 60 seconds to copy my 960 evo 250GB to the 970 Evo Plus 1TB.

What an unnecessary bother I put myself through with the whole windows flash drive process.

I don't see a clean install happening and maybe I shouldn't be bothered with that. It was more about upgrading my main drive storage volume while it was on sale and I'm stuck on gen 3.

So that worked and everything is good again. And I put the 960 away just as a back up. Should work if I have a failure.

These NVMe drives are just nuts. Faster than blinking.

Should have checked the Samsung thing out earlier, sorry about that.

But not a bad idea to get an external enclosure for the old drive and use that as an external. I'll have to see about that.

I upgraded ssd to a Samsung 980 pro w/ heatsink. What a difference...AutoCAD opens up in about 8 seconds. It was around 20. Lightroom and Photoshop both open in about 1/3rd of the time it used to. Right around 10 seconds each. Quite the performance boost.

I have the same ssd. My PC boots up blazing fast. It's like turning on a light.

Make sure you update that drives firmware ASAP using the Samsung software, or else you will run into the degradation issue

Thanks for the reminder. I forgot to check on that...The drive came with the latest firmware.

Because why not, I "upgraded" my PC's game storage ssd from a 4TB Samsung 860 EVO to a 4TB Corsair MP600 Pro.

I just got a couple of new SSDs to add also lol. I have a 500GB 970 Evo NVMe drive as a boot drive currently, I'm upgrading that to a 1TB 980 Pro, and also adding more game storage with a 2TB WD 850X. I have about 4 TB of SATA SSD game storage currently.

Another cabinet came in today!
I will post more later.

I would love to buy an arcade cabinet. Funny story. My brother and I were in a mall in VA maybe 12-15 years ago and the arcade was wholesell selling their commercial arcade cabinets as they were going out of buisness. They had Marvel vs Capcom, NFL Blitz, Street fighter, etc all for $100 -200 USD. 1 day only everything must go sale.
Only problem was 1. I lived 3 states south and had no way of getting one home. 2. My brother lived in a TINY studio apartment in VA and literally had no room for it. 3. We were fresh out of school and had no disposable income. I swear youth is wasted on the young.
