Next Gen Games Going Up In Price?

If development companies are heading towards unionizing, we'll probably see an increase in game prices just due to that.

If we have the option of paying an extra $10 up front and they stop trying to hook micro transactions into games I'd be all for it.

What if you pay the standard price, here in the US it’s 59.99 but with ads during the loading screen. Or pay a small premium, like 69.99, and get no ads

That would defeat the purpose of the fast loading that the SSD provides, that probably would have been a decent option for the current gen though.

True, but I fear once next gen games leave there the kiddie pool of 8th-gen upres ports the size of the assets/worlds/effects will negate the benefit for said games. I have no experience within 4k/RT/SSD with current pc games but I wonder what a game on say on the Xbox Elite with the hybrid ssd/HDD will compare to the same game, on pc, with a comparable graphics card and a ssd.

Yep. For the few games that are worth $60 now (not that many to be honest), I'd pay $70, but there better not be a single microtransaction in there.

For $70, you better give me a finished, polished product with zero future transactions in it.

Honestly I rarely pay $60 for games now unless it is a big, multiplayer release that I want day 1. For single player games especially I have a big backlog and always wait for a sale.

Which is never going to happen.

price should be going down, not up. The rise of digital means they get more per unit sold. Microtransactions everywhere.

Games already had a price hike not that long ago anyway.

Put it this way, if games go to $70 then I will never buy a new game on release.

I'm ok with game prices going up. Its been a while. I think game prices go down way too fast and its hurting the industry. Its crazy we can wait about 2 months and a game will be at half price. How that is sustainable is beyond me.

Prices went up at the beginning of the last generation, it has been a long time and costs have gone up as well. A big AAA game takes a much bigger dev team now and they take longer to make so something has to give at some point if we want the industry to remain healthy. That doesn't mean a company has to be as bad as EA or Activision but prices going up makes sense IMO.

If they keep raising the prices then the consumerbase is going to shrink. 60 bucks for a video game is very pricey.

I feel we been down this path before, asking whether it’s worth paying full price for a game that lacks a mode like black ops 4 or Wolfenstein.

With streaming it’ll be a tougher pill to sublingual :p are people going to pay full price for a game at either tier of stadia? I remember with PS Now the last of us was a full price title whilst the remaster was atleast 10 bucks cheaper, maybe cheaper elsewhere.

I know some out there say “pc games are cheaper”. I haven’t bought a pc game ever, so yee. All I hear is people saying “I have so many games that I bought on sale I’ve yet to play one, in years”. Anyways, aren’t games(AAA games or nothing indie) on pc usually the same price as their console/switch counterpart upon release?

They went two generations on the same price point, it's not like they are raising them every two years. I get what you are saying but if we want these companies to stop or at least slow down on trying other ways to screw us over I think a basic $10 up front would be the best way. They could also get more creative with their pricing and charge prices depending on what each individual game cost to make but that's never going to happen either.

At launch games are usually the same. What people are probably referring to is digital/Steam sales on PC. Steam has digital sales a few times a year at least (along with weekly sales) and you can often find games cheaper. Back in the day especially but even now you can assume most games will be on sale fairly soon. There was definitely a time when PC games were generally quite a bit cheaper sooner than their console counterparts.

Of course today things are changing. Seasonal digital sales are becoming the norm on consoles. You've got physical but online from Amazon (especially when they had their prime program for new releases). Not every game is on steam anymore either with things like the Epic store.

In my experience, it is pretty easy to find games on sale on just about any platform if you pay attention. Console digital sales aren't quite where physical sales are around Black Friday, but they are getting a lot closer. Unless you need a game within a month or two of launch, sales are pretty easy to find.

No it isn't the best way. Raising the price to $100 bucks wouldn't stop all s***ty money making schemes.

And it doesn't matter how often they raise prices.

The problem today is these companies are poorly run. They waste alot of resources on pointless crap. They don't listen to consumers and build games with the content they want. Everything is always bigger when there is no need for it. The extra money making schdmes are terribly executed. Games release in terrible states and drives the playerbase down resulting in less post launch cash flow.

How about they fix the underlying problems instead of jacking up prices.

Just look EA: According to them Anthem not being good is the gamers fault. With ignorance like this the games industry is f***ed.

EA is looking more and more like a lost cause, it's too bad we don't have more private companies making games, this model where they have to show huge growth every year just to make investors happy is killing their relationship with their customers. There is a lot of bloat at times for sure but at the same time we have more powerful hardware coming that's going to require more resources to take advantage of even if it's run more efficiently, it's just something that's going to happen.

When you get rid of Microtransaction you bet your ass they are going to jack the prices.

I disagree. They'll jack the prices whenever they think they can do so. They'll get rid of microtransactions whenever think they can no longer afford not to. Those two decisions are as related as Kanye West's grandmother and Indira Ghandi's cousin.

Shareholders is not an excuse.

The problem is quality and content has been going down, so essentially we've already been paying more for less. The $60 hasn't changed, but the amount of content often does.

The big problem is that the powers that be see a really successful game, and they say, "Ok, now do that again, in half the time, with fewer resources, and make even more money".

This is the start of the downward spiral. Game 2 disappoints everyone, customers, developers and owners. So, what do they do to "fix" it? Cut costs and quality even more. Few games seem to break the mold. We read more and more about developers going through constant crunch, which leads to poor quality.

Maybe make better games first, then we can talk about price?

give me game for free and put as many ads as you want, if I pay premium price for a digital game - no way in hel will I accept pure advertisement in a game (except the usual stealthy product placement thing).
