Microsoft needs to let devs and publishers, especially indies, freely price their games, like they do on Steam, across all their digital stores
The problem with Steam OS is the game support compared to Windows. Not to mention, not a single game that I currently own on my PS or Xbox will work on Steam OS. With the next Xbox, I will be able to at least play my 800 Xbox games on it. And if I can't even play Wow, or COD or BF6 on Steam OS, what is the point of buying one?
They are not going to win the goodwill of gamers back with the price of their hardware going up multiple times regardless if it's their fault or not.
$399-499 powerful console that's easy to optimize for with tentpole first party exclusives.
But my guess is their direction is going more and more third party especially with how much more expensive XGS has turned into after the two behemoth acquisitions.
Looks to be another huge console release announcement. This will probably be the definitive console to own. Not only in performance and graphics, but in compatibility with an extensive number of games. If rumors hold true, one would only need a Switch 2 and Next Gen Xbox going forward. Not to mention, their first party onslaught is untouched.
They had it with the 360 and og Xbox, they captured some of it with the series x, and a, but then somehow bungled it. They had a period of six straight months where they were outselling ps5 and even a few where they outsold the switch. I do wonder if they could’ve sold more had they not used Xbox series x for their servers. I think someone reported that half of their allocated series x’s were going to power their cloud gaming. They should’ve busted used series s’s instead, but then again they said they weee using the x to emulate up to four series s’s but at a lower frame rate, that it (to me) seemed like they were really emulating one s’s
I do wonder if the way to do this is release something super strong that plays Steam, etc. Almost tailored more towards the hardcore gamer…?
In a weird way that makes it cooler than trying to please everyone. Plus if the goal is ‘game anywhere’ there are plenty of other lesser options for HW.
If it’s just on par with PS6 it has no chance.
Not sure how Steam on the new console would benefit them. The Xbox store gives MS more revenue from each game.

Don't forget that they were outselling PlayStation 5 because they were able to get more Series consoles shipped in that time frame, the demand wasn't higher than PlayStation it was the supply.
It makes it more niche, most console players aren't interested in PC gaming and most PC players are going to look down on it being a console because they are snobs lol. They have an audience that will buy it but it will probably be the worst selling console they've ever released, not because it won't be a good machine but because their market share has been dropping for two generations in a row AND if the rumored pricing of over $1000. is true that's going to be a big no for most people no matter how powerful it is.
Yeah but people are paying 1k for the Ally, phones, etc. I don’t think it’s out of the range for a lot of people now. They don’t need to sell a ton of HW now since they are more about the ecosystem and selling games.
Is that a good idea? Time will tell. But at this point they can’t compete with the PS6 otherwise. And as they said, they are competing against other forms of entertainment as well.
And I’m not interested in PC gaming, but I AM interested in games that are only on PC currently. I think others might be in the same boat.
Part of me just feels that going to an extreme on the power front might be appealing to the more serious console player, and *might* change perspective on Xbox down the line.

I’m gonna guess they’ll release that new version of the controller then, so it’ll have full gyro, actuated haptics and maybe a mini Touch Bar to cover all games across all platforms and emulation, may even default the controllers with paddles/buttons built right in…hopefully with a way to turn them off so you don’t accidentally hit them
I've seen people who have had inside info in the past saying over $1000 before this ram nonsense started, we'll see how it goes.
The Ally has probably sold a couple of hundred thousand at most, that won't cut it for a console. Phones are rarely paid for up front in the US, most people just pay it off over 2 years and many upgrade to the next one as soon as they are done paying it off.
They've been saying PlayStation wasn't their competition for the last two generations, all of these consoles are competing with the same things, each other as well as other forms of entertainment and anything else that takes up someone's free time.
Xbox had a power advantage this gen and it was their worst selling machine since the original, it's not just about power. I mean look at how the best looking games look on PC now, do they make PS5/XSX games look bad? no, I mean they run better but I'm sure both consoles next gen will focus on at least 60fps. The hardcore xbox crowd will buy it as long as they can afford it but that group is shrinking.
They all need to be mindful of pricing, this is a hobby and at some point they are going to price people out of it.
The real question is how did Xbox Series sell even worse than the Xbox One thus far considering they should have powered up their first party studios through acquiring Zenimax and Activision , learned from the X1 mistakes, and Gamepass should have hit an even bigger stride now than when it first launched mid way last gen etc. That is the big elephant in the room.
