Q. After my Nintendo Switch Online subscription expires, will my Save Data Cloud files and Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online save data be erased?

A. Save data stored with Save Data Cloud cannot be kept outside of the duration of your Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online also uses the Save Data Cloud, so the same applies. However, if you keep the Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online save data saved locally on your Nintendo Switch console, then you can use it again if you purchase another membership.

Q. Is my save data retained if I cancel my Nintendo Switch Online membership?

A. We are unable to guarantee that cloud save data will be retained after an extended period of time from when your membership is ended. However, you can continue to use the save data that is saved to your system memory.

You'll need to connect your Nintendo Switch to the internet every seven days to keep playing your NES games.

The Virtual Console-style catalogue of retro classics comes as part of Nintendo Switch's upcoming online subscription. But you'll need to remember to connect at least every week in order to guarantee access - even if your subscription is a long way from expiring.

If you have an online subscription you're likely to be playing online regularly, although maybe you're heading on holiday? Or maybe you only play on the bus without internet and are subscribing just to play retro games?

Nintendo's method is different to how PlayStation Plus and Xbox Games with Gold titles work on PS4 and Xbox One. Both Sony and Microsoft let you play offline as long as you like if the games are downloaded to your "home" console.

I don't see anything that would ever get me to pay for their online service.

Do Sony or MS do the same with your save game data when you cancel their services?
I don't think MS does. I could be thinking of something different, but I canceled Xbox Live once, after I downloaded Sunset Overdrive when it was a GWG. I got Live back and my Save Data was still there. This could be different, though, so feel free to correct me if these two implementations aren't the same.

I could be wrong but I believe Sony keeps your cloud saves for six months after you allow your membership to lapse.

MS saves to both your console and cloud as long as you have an internet connection, be it gold or not, allows for easier save data syncing.

I wish Nintendo could just outsource there online services to MS. They knock almost everything else out of the park.

Definitely dumb but at $20 a year i don't really see why you'd let your sub lapse if you're serious about playing on the Switch to begin with. Doesn't bother me much.

I am mostly tempted to buy this to be assured my Zelda and Mario saves are safe.
