This is probably why we won’t see first party day one releases on ps-now

The creative director and writer of Days Gone has said that players should buy games at full price if they like them, instead of waiting for them to go on sale or be given away as part of services like PlayStation Plus.

John Garvin was speaking to game designer David Jaffe on Jaffe’s YouTube show, where he was asked if he’d heard anything about any “meaningful uptick of engagement” with Days Gone since the game was added to the PlayStation Plus Collection on PS5.

“I do have an opinion on something that your audience may find of interest, and it might piss some of them off,” Garvin replied. “If you love a game, buy it at f***ing full price. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen gamers say ‘yeah, I got that on sale, I got it through PS Plus, whatever’.”

“But how do you know you love a game until you’ve played it?” Jaffe responded.

“I’m just saying, you don’t, but don’t complain if a game doesn’t get a sequel if it wasn’t supported at launch,” Garvin replied. “It’s like, God of War got whatever number millions of sales at launch and, you know, Days Gone didn’t. [I’m] just speaking for me personally as a developer, I don’t work for Sony, I don’t know what the numbers are.

The news that a pitch for Days Gone 2 had been rejected by Sony prompted David Jaffe, the game designer known for creating God of War and Twisted Metal, to host video interviews with Days Gone directors on his YouTube channel. Last week he had Jeff Ross, while yesterday it was John Garvin's turn (who, by the way, was also the game's writer).

Garvin revealed to have left Sony Bend merely days after the game's release in April 2019. When Jaffe asked him how he took the first wave of Days Gone reviews, Garvin replied:

"I took it hard, to be honest, because, again...This is just the reality of Sony, Metacritic score is everything. If you're the creative director on a franchise and your game is coming out to a 70, you're not going to be the creative director on that franchise for very long."

I know this guy is bitter about his very specific circumstance, but if you're trying to plead poverty to gamers who have been nickle and dimed for years now with loot boxes, DLC we have to pay for that should have been part of the full game, minor upgrades to games that they reissue at full price, hikes in prices for this gen to $70, etc, then I'm afraid you're not going to get much of a reception.

And, if you're complaining about Metacritic scores, well, your game was flawed bro. I'm not going to get into whether it was overrated or underrated or anything like that, but it sure as hell wasn't perfect, was going against other stiff competition in the genre, and really was fairly unoriginal. The reason Metacritic means something is that as a group most gamers can't afford to not be selective with what we buy, which also goes back to why we collectively have to wait for sales.

^^ No that's not why.
The game was not only a critical fail but also a mess at launch.
Did they make things right? Yes but the damage was already done.
Sony releases premium products.

What a complete clown statement. Comparing Days Gone (a new IP) to an already established IP like a God of War is moronic and none of what that guy said makes any sense.

He's not completely wrong though. We love our sales, but s*** goes on sale (usually) because it isn't selling. He was speaking in reference to getting a sequel made. His point was if you want more of it, then you need to support it. That's a generally true statement.

It's why I still buy certain games even though they are on Game Pass. I will buy Halo Infinite because I care to see it continue.

That said- Days Gone didn't have instant appeal to a lot of people. His game was good but flawed. I thought it was underrated, personally, and wouldn't mind seeing a sequel. I don't have to have one though. Comparing your lower budget game to GoW is silly as well, but his point wasn't really about GoW.

Honestly, always blows my mind how people act like this is such an expensive hobby and will only buy games on deep sales and such. We all like to save money, I guess. And I agree about predatory loot box practices and such but I feel that is pretty rare.

Can't argue with that. Still, I think the crux of it is that full support is what keeps studios afloat and communicates what customers want to see more of. It's a tough spot for a new IP.

I love the game, always have but I think a good chunk of sales came at reduced prices after the launch period. It didn't help that some review sites knocked it for not being what they wanted it to be vs grading it on what it was. I'd love a sequel, I'd much rather play a Days Gone 2 than play Men in Black if that's really what they are working on.

What if MIB was developed by Naughty Dog

Nah, I mean I could change my mind if the game is real and is shown and they somehow make it really cool but I never cared for the parts of the movies I've seen.

I had no clue there wasn't going to be another Days Gone :txbmad: I beat it not long ago and thought it was great.

Some of the reviews for the game were criminal (gamespot) You got the feeling if the main character wasn't a straight white guy those same reviewers would have said it was amazing.

I bought it at full price which is why I consider it one of the worst PS exclusives. All of those terrible reviews were justified. Even after the 1,793 updates, I wasn't able to even attempt to download any of them being stuck on garbage internet at the time. I installed it on PS5 and never bothered to play it again because the memories are so bad of what I played at launch.

That site doesn't offer a refund for the game, so idk how that will help.
