Looks like everything will be lost. It's breaking so that's all we know. It's Paris, a hotbed of terrorism activity, that's the first thing that came to my mind, arson/terrorism, and it was Palm Sunday yesterday, Good Friday this Friday, and Easter is this Sunday.

As a Catholic it's a place I've always wanted to see. Terrible news.

The first report I saw was literally just that it was on fire. Figured something simple, but now after I've driven to another work location and check, like you said it is terrible. Looking at the Reddit post for it there is a lot of construction as well so possibly from that.

I saw a comment that it may be related to on going renovations. Not sure if it was electrical or chemical mishap.

It suggested they've been trying to save the Cathedral basically from centuries of wear and tear as well as from issues relating to modern pollution.

I don't mean to sound cold hearted but I think the news media here in the US went way overboard with their coverage of this. It's an historic building yes but that's all it is, people who are murdered don't get anywhere near this much attention unless it's a terrorist attack or they are famous.

True, but that who goes even further but those are subjects I won’t touch.

I guess since said building is so well known around the world for many different things it just holds more reverence even if people don’t know everything about it.

My coworker was like “oh no, that temple that looks like it came out of ‘oblivion’, that’s horrible”...he’s not religious either, well was Mormon. My gf know it only from “that Disney cartoon” lol she’s Buddhist

That was my thought "oh that's sad" but that was about it, I don't live in France and I'm not religious but I do love old churches and other architecture of that type. I just think the hours upon hours of coverage just seemed a bit much, there were a few black churches burned in Louisiana over the past few weeks and it was hard to even find anything more than a passing mention of that.

As the smoke clears on the events that unfolded on Monday at the Notre-Dame de Paris, we stand in solidarité with our fellow Parisians and everyone around the world moved by the devastation the fire caused. Notre-Dame is an integral part of Paris, a city to which we are deeply connected. Seeing the monument in peril like this affected us all.

In light of Monday's events, we will be donating €500,000 to help with the restoration and reconstruction of the Cathedral. We encourage all of you who are interested to donate as well. In addition, we want to give everyone the chance to experience the majesty and beauty of Notre-Dame the best way we know how. For one week, we will be giving Assassin's Creed Unity away free on PC, for anyone who wants to enjoy it. You can download it now for Uplay PC here: http://assassinscreed.com/unity-notredame/

When we created Assassin's Creed Unity, we developed an even closer connection with this incredible city and its landmarks – one of the most notable elements of the game was the extraordinary recreation of Notre-Dame.
