Old PS5 rumors

This E3? Think you are getting ahead of yourself.

Tech demos are pointless, they are never even remotely representative. Rather they show something a bit more real and honest.

I expect announcements. Probably not a full on reveal, but Sony is already getting a lot of press and interest in the PS5. They will have to do something to keep some mindshare.

And I love tech demos. Obviously they don't typically indicate what you would see in games, but I really love them. Just raw demonstrations of what could be pushed out visually, or from a physics perspective. They can show games too, of course, but I like the spectacle.

I really liked that Lady Bug rendering demo they put out for the X too.

I don't see actual 8K support being used much or at all.

The 8K part is likely the HDMI 2.1 support.

I could see this and it be pretty amazing if we could get PS/2 games with 8K support/downsampled to 4K...

8k just seems so pointless to me. 4k is already ridiculously sharp, and typical home sized TVs aren't going to see much benefit from viewing distance.

The last thing I want is for them to start chasing 8k and wasting all of that overhead on frikkin' resolution. 4k is the sweet spot. Let's use that power to improve the games now.

Good news and loving the specs. Hopefully it's full BC on 99% PS4 games and not like XB1 s***ty BC where you need to beg to have them added.

You wont see games chasing 8K next gen. Maybe a few indie titles and maybe Gran Turismo might have an 8K mode.

The 8K support seems more about upscaling should 8k take off .

Yep, give me 4k, 60fps and much improved load times and I'm happy.

Agreed. 4k is just now really becoming a reality at acceptable framerates on consoles. To me, this just sounds like a grab by Sony to throw out a tagline. "lookie here, we have 8k support *sticks tongue out*" Then the reality hits that there won't be a title capable of hitting 8k for like ten years.

This sounded very snarky, but really what I am trying to say is they are just throwing out boosted up specs right now to drum up hype. We all know 8k is basically pointless at this period on game consoles. There isn't a wide enough adoption to 4k to even warrant the advancement to 8k.

I can't wait. I am glad I held off buying PS4 pro and Xbox one X. I can save up for both PS5 and Xbox two next year when they launch. I am expecting $499 for each so $1000 need plus games.

They said upscaling to 8k right? That seems like honest marketing to me.

I don't think anyone expects it to be native.
Right but that is part of the HDMI 2.1 spec.
They are giving the impression that PS5 will run 8K games.
Xbox V also will be able to do this.

Gaming isn't the only thing that is barely coming to grips with 4K...
Most movies aren't even shot in 4K.
We will be stuck on 4K for a long time.

So far so good, but there are big unanswered questions that will make a big difference in final performance:

-mhz RAM and # of shaders in GPU

-what type of ssd

-Sata nvm pci

8K support could be just for video-out; which would make sense for Sony to include considering they're making 8k tv's.

I'd imagine the only gaming thing that'd possibly be 8k would possibly be older BC games (PS1, PS2) and probably some indie games. If PS3 games are on the table that seems like it could be a possibility as well.

Yeah I know he said "8K graphics" but I'm guessing that it'll just upscale, no way a modern AAA game is going to actually be 8K.

Being that the SSD is already getting things through faster than anything available for PC right now I'm guessing the type doesn't matter as much as what they are able to do with it.

Yeah that s***ty BC that actually improved old games to 9x the resolution. And damn Microsoft for showing Sony that people actually do care about BC. They cant ever do anything right.

To be fair only a small handful of games got any really noticeable improvement and some of the ones that didn't actually look worse somehow than they did on the 360. The Witcher 2 looked great on the 360 but on X1X before the update that improved everything it was a blurry mess. They get credit for doing what they are doing for sure but it's not like it's 100% BC and the quality of the emulation varies from title to title.

True but considering what MS was working with hardware wise Xbox One/X, BC and in some cases improved BC was super impressive.

I expect Sony to do similar but in steroid mode!

Oh yeah the games that actually got enhanced look great for what they are, I had no interest in playing ugly sub 720p games on my One X but when they enhanced RDR and The Witcher 2 I was really happy with the results.

As far as Sony I guess it depends on how they are doing the BC, MS seems to be doing it on a title by title basis so everything needs to be touched in some form or fashion, if Sony is doing it in a way that makes everything just work I'd guess it's all going to be basic BC unless a game gets a patch. The good news is PS4 games already look good so even if they aren't improved in any real way it's not like we'll be looking at something ugly.

I thought the X automatically boosted the resolution on BC games? Not the 9x enhancement but 2x? Or did they just get upscaled?

I think it does something to enhance the texture filtering but again it really depends on the game, some look pretty good and some look awful.

Only on X enhanced games does that actually happen. But there is 16xAF added to all BC games by default.

Yeah I knew the AF was being done but I couldn't remember if anything else was by default, that AF boost is hard to notice on the games that look really blurry though, I remember being so disappointed when the witcher 2 was first made BC, it looked so much worse than it did on the 360 I didn't even want to play it, thankfully they gave it an X1X upgrade and it looked MUCH better. RDR didn't look anywhere near as bad before it's enhancement as the witcher 2 did but the enhancement helped that game a great deal as well. It's sort of a blessing and a curse, you appreciate it for the games that do get the extra love but then when you see that the vast majority of them don't it's a little disappointing. Thankfully from this gen on anything that's BC even if it doesn't get any extra enhancements is going to look decent to great depending on the game and who made it.
