For the first time in many years, Blizzard announced a new franchise today: meet Overwatch, a team-based multiplayer shooter with Pixar-like graphics that will enter beta next year.

Overwatch is a reworked version of the PVP portions of Blizzard's Titan, the long-in-development MMO that was overhauled in mid-2013. Despite reports earlier this year that Titan had been cancelled, the game actually morphed into Overwatch last year, according to a person familiar with the project.

Holy s***.

It's like a perfect version of Smite, but x10.

This reminds me so much of TF2, but in a good way.

Interesting that it's a salvaged portion of Titan, which confirms it was an MMOFPS. It's sad that got cancelled, an MMOFPS by Blizzard would be pretty cool.

Why does English voice overs sound so annoying in video games ? Most English people do not sound or speak like these old school, up tight, richy, highty-tighty styles they seem to love holding on to. :smash:

Not sure what to make of this game. Big issue I see is the lack of content, I mean, lack of abilities. There seems to be so few.

Looks like a cross of Monday night combat and TF2 which is fine by me as I love both those games :)

Why are people mentioning Smite and Monday Night Combat with this game? This game doesn't have any creeps or towers.

Looks great. Should be able to find a character that plays like anyone wants.

I'd rather play TF2 like a real gamer! :D And is it just me or is the second video really choppy framerate-wise? I may have just gotten too adjusted to the 60fps YouTube stuff.

I'm talking about the actual combat and how each character has a very different move set, similar to a moba.

What other class based, FPS arena shooters with hybrid RPG type elements are out at the moment please?
This is essentially TF as a FPS/Moba hybrid. We already had Gigantic and Battleborn announced which are essentially the same thing.

Anyone want to make any bets which game will receive long term support by its respective developer? Overwatch? Gigantic? Or Battleborn? The answer is obvious.

Looks cool, but do we need another arena shooter?

I would argue this is at least taking the shooter in a different, better direction.

Games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Halo are, to some degree, are a version of the childrens game "Hot Hands". Players generally win by being able to place their cursor on the other players quicker than everyone else in the match. They're basically games designed to reward joystick jocks.

Games like Overwatch (hopefully), BattleBorn, and Gigantic on the other hand have the Hot Hands part of it, but also attempt to insert a little strategy, tactics, and team play into the game. While I'm not thrilled with the speed these games are portraying, I'm hell of a lot more excited for these than the old guard type FPS games.

It looks really interesting. Like a modernized, more interesting and varied TF2. Gonna check it out for sure.

Really ? I never really see that. I mean the tactics, team-play, strategy, for games like this or TF2 always seem similar to that of a game like battlefield. You have support guys, medics..etc. Oh, look, I can fly and drop OP bombs from the sky, that be real strategy. Oh, look, I can teleportz and drop an OP Bomb then teleportz out, strategy up the whazoo.

Sorry, but these games have no more, no less strategy & teamplay than pretty much every other shooter. Even something like COD can be strategic and team-play centric. I remember when folks said similar to TF2, and then when I played it it was a typical shooter. People just running round like mad hatter, shooting everything in site, and only real doing team based stuff when it suited and benefit them.

I know, I know, you said hopefully. And hopefully I am wrong, but doubt it.

I feel like competitive multiplayer games are built around variety more than ever myself. I mean, even CoD, despite arguably being the most "Hot Hands" out of the three, still offers up some levels of strategy and teamwork. Obviously Battlefield has it's own level of interactions and destruction that makes it standout from the pack, but Halo has always carried with it the described stategies, tactics, and teamwork. I mean, power-ups/armor abilities, multi-man vehicles and aircraft, having a variety of weapons from human/alien guns and grenades to melee weapons, and maps have always been large enough to support a nice spacing out of players that allow teammates to coordinate and aid each other where CoD is typically known for smaller areas for the most part. That's not taking into account that it feels like those games offer you the ability to be a lone wolf or team player. It really depends on how much one plays against randoms and/or friends most of the time.

As for Overwatch, the thing that bothers me is that it looks like overkill. There are so many classes and if it weren't for visuals, I'd say that some of them bleed heavily into each other. It almost looks like TF2 on steroids and that's just a scary thought to me considering how much TF2 has grown from it's original formula. It's only a matter of time before they make some form of hats and then an even shorter amount of time before they carry some kind of buffer effect.

What is great nowadays is that the online FPS has evolved tremendously. Back in the day, games like UT, Doom and Quake etc had deathmatch where it was just one point for one frag, then with games like Quake 3 team arena, Wolfenstein, TF 1&2, counter strike etc we started to get games which encouraged team work, had objectives and you could get points for helping out, assists etc
Even games like battlefield, CoD, halo etc now have slight RPG elements built in with Unlockables, levelling up, perks and abilities, character progression etc etc which for me has made these types of game much more enjoyable and satisfying.
I loved Shadowrun like I said above, and I am a massive fan of TF2 and Monday night combat and more games like these and Overwatch are very welcome in my books :D

This is just wrong.

Games are designed with different goals in mind. To say that all shooters offer the same amount of strategy and team play is just foolish.

We are all dumber for reading your post.

one day you will realize and notice my comment as truth.
Yes, games are made with different goals, but you seem to have overlooked the most important and influential variable.

Yeah TF2 isn't even close to the same thing as COD.
