How are they not the underdog?

OG Xbox - Cam second but sold 120 million consoles fewer than #1.
X360 -Came third.
Xbox One - Came third.
XSX/S - Currently third.

They are literally the definition of an underdog.

Spencer lies it is the end of the world.
Jim Ryan lies and not even a frown is given.

Ponies in full meltdown mode.
Well Xbox One was 2nd, ahead of Wii U.

None of them have multiplatform IP that is being made exclusive and many of them were indie studios. When you guys continue to pretend that buying Activision is the same thing as buying a studio that has only done remakes or one that does PC ports it doesn't strengthen your argument.

This constant "MS is the trillion-dollar underdog" narrative is a joke. All companies buy and close studios, Sony has done it, Nintendo has done it and MS has done it, what's different is buying out publishers that make the biggest multiplatform games in the industry and pretending you are doing it to save the company and have no intention of taking games away from other players when behind the scenes you're saying the exact opposite.

Spencer's line about Bethesda running "semi independently" was a joke as well and showed he's nothing more than a corporate BS artist, the lies he was telling about the Activision deal only solidified what most people already knew.

But but, its different when good guy Sony does it. its for the greater good, unlike bad guy MS, which is for corporate greed and evil.

Microsoft buying publishers is different than just a studio and a worse thing for gaming overall but that doesn't make Microsoft wrong or bad for doing it

Wanna agree with ya on 99.999% of what you said. Atm we don’t know if it’s “a worse thing for gaming”. It’s more of a wait and see if they do what many predict and or fear. Then we can look back and say “yup….or….I told you so”

Without context I would say buying a publisher is bad for gaming, but Activision is an absolute mess. Them getting purchased by MS is certainly good for Activision employees and stockholders.

Bungie is a publisher, and Sony bought them. I have no doubt that if Sony had the money and Activision was for sale, Sony would have bought them if MS hadn't.

Yup.

We will see what the future holds now that these two dominoes have fallen.

Hopefully better for the developers/employees.

But I’m sure there’s gonna be many who leave because they don’t want to be under the ms/Xbox umbrella ella ellaaah making bacon pancakes…

Since the OG XBox launched to what they’ve done in recent years, what should MS have done to get a leg up/compete in this industry? We saw what happened to Sega and plus Nintendo had a 1980’s head start and Sony a 1990’s head start.

I don't know why you are including since I specifically said they didn't do anything wrong.

Your question shouldn't since the Xbox launched because Xbox was neck and neck with Sony until they blew up their first party but essentially your question is what are they supposed to do after that and the answer is make acquisitions.

My question is there ever a point where we can say they have done enough? Its a tough sell to me that they still need to make purchases to compete or that they even needed Activision to compete.

Well, their intent was to bolster Game Pass subscriptions. It's easier for them to make their subscription plan more appealing with a lot of developers putting games on their subscription plan. If they tried to do it a single studio at a time, or building those studios, it would take decades to cover the same base.

They are trying to make an incentive for people to subscribe. They need massive blockbusters NOW, not later.

Better manage their first party studios for one.

I don't have an issue with acquisitions per se but don't act like it's a good thing when you're taking multiplatform games away from other platforms.

Too true. But don't take away popular pop-culture characters away from gamers who wish to have fun in taking digital control of one of their favorite heroes like Sony did with SPIDERMAN. It's like it's cool when Sony shuts gamers down but when they get it done to them all of a sudden they are the VICTIM.

MS turned Marvel down first and that's when they turned to Sony. Ironically, Xbox wanted to focus on its own IPs at the time 🤣

MS amusingly had first dibs.

I agree, MSFT fcked up. But Sony took it too far in making Spiderman exclusive to a multiplatform game like the Avengers. Also, you don't hear MSFT whining about how they missed out on the Spiderman game. They just moved on unlike Sony who's crying to anyone who will listen over one IP.

Seems like outside of the multiplayer in Halo, where does MS need to do a better job at managing their studios?

Yeah the Avengers thing was kind of weird. Should have been day 1 multiplatform for Spidey especially when Sony already has Spiderman.

They didn't whine BC they knew they messed up lol.

It's more like Sony is crying over the potential lost revenue. Which are ongoing from COD and other IPs for 2 decades now. It's a huge balance shift all at once to lose out on all these new and existing IPs. $70 billion worth of IPs.

Agreed, with management of their first parties, directly under them. Pretty sure Bethesda is their Shepard dog with all their studios.

They haven’t removed anything from any console, yet, but they do want to and should port their games over to switch.

2 AAA first party studio games in Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 entering year 3 in just over a month. That's good enough for you?
