Playground Games' open world RPG, what are your hopes for it?

So we know PG's second studio is working on a open world RPG and even though it hasn't been officially confirmed yet it very likely is a new Fable. But even if it's not Fable and turns out to be a new IP I'm absolutely fine with that. Xbox getting its own open world RPG is exciting in itself.

But I was wondering, what are your hopes for this game? If it's Fable, do you hope they stay as loyal as possible to the name or would you be fine if they just only use the name and come with brand new ideas and concepts? Personally I wouldn't mind a brand new approach, no more expressions and certainly not the farts and burping.

I would love a much more grown up, adult approach with less "childish" humor I guess. Make it more like Witcher in that regard and bring a dark fantasy tale like it as well. I also hope they will come up with new stuff, stuff that we haven't yet seen in this genre. I have no idea what but I'm hoping they will surprise us. Take Horizon ZD for example, while a lot was heavily inspired by many other games, they did have the robotic dino creatures and you could say that for a game in its genre that's something new.

Share what you would love to see from PG's open world RPG.

If it's Fable get rid of the guns.

Time to have a Mass Effect style chat wheel rather than lame farts and what not

I'd like it to retain Fable's humor, although I agree I could do without the fart jokes. I'd also like slightly less cartoonish-looking models. I don't want it to be a serious, adult, "mature" RPG ala The Witcher, though. We've got enough of those. I'd like it to retain Fable's lightheartedness. A lot of that depends on studio culture, though, and I'm not sure Playground can pull that off or wants to. I'm expecting a more serious and heavy version.

Beyond that, I'd like more lush, immersive outdoor environments that pull you to explore more. Fable's environments were colorful and vibrant, but I never felt like I was really wandering in the forest, and exploration never felt all that rewarding.

I'd like it to be more challenging, too. Fable's one-button combat was dumb. I don't mind easy games, but come on.

I like an RDR stlye fantasy game. Gritty and realistic, Low Fantasy (no generic elves or dwarves kinda thing) with good melee and a solid physicality.

Maybe even something with a Bad Company vibe like a Guy Richie film..

Yes this especially. Give us all the freedom you can have too. I see water, I want to be able to go there and enter it and swim. I believe Fable 3 offered more freedom like that, but not enough.

And if they can do this properly, I'd like a voiced protagonist too. Enough with the silent protagonist stuff.

I agree with this. But Fable is popular for its charm and humor. We need that.

I agree. I wonder if they'll retain the charm and humor, though. It seems to be a popular tactic, to drop the lighthearted elements and turn a series into something dark and grim. Negative emotions capture attention much more effectively than positive ones (which is part of why politics, news, and social media can be so toxic), so there is plenty of monetary incentive to go in that direction. I hope they don't, but I won't be surprised if they do. I'm optimistic that they'll strike a balance, though.

Sounds like if guardians of the galaxy were an rpg only withthr fable title and more magic....dude, imagine if Xbox got exclusivity to said franchise

I'd like it to be more challenging, too. Fable's one-button combat was dumb. I don't mind easy games, but come on.

The combat in Fable 1 was the best in the series, I think 2 is where they switched to the one button system, but Fable 1 I felt actually had a really great system for combining all 3 types of combat. I especially liked how you had very easy access to a bevy of your spells really quickly.

If it is a Fable they're working on, I'd want it to retain the light-heartedness as well. And while they could tone it down a tad, I sort of like the cartoon-ish art style, with characters having exaggerated features and what not. Plenty of games are made to portray characters and landscapes with realistic proportions, part of the charm of the series for me was the cartoony nature of the character models and structures.

I agree they need to do away with guns. I think time-line wise they should do a prequel to the first game and get back to the bows, swords & wizardry for the combat aspects. I'd like to see more variety in the weaponry and playstyles as well. Make it possible to be a stealth assassin, or a hulking knight, a noble wizard or gallant archer etc.

I want them to deliver on story, combat and memorable characters. As much as Lionhead seemed to enjoy it, I never really got the whole farting, belching and emote stuff that was in the game. Fable legends artistically with a Witcher 3 kind of world map.

I want what they originally promised Fable to be. You’re in a big living breathing world with consequences and the world can change. Keep the humor and charm.

Yes. And this, please.

Fable would be fine but I would also enjoy something out of nowhere like Outward, with a little less jank maybe,or even a Pyranah Bytes type game...(Gothic,Risen,Elex)

All I know is, I can't wait for whatever the opening mission is. Every single opening race in the Forza Horizon series has been jaw dropping fun.

That would be a change. Most first missions in RPGs are stuff like "go kill a rat."

I just can't wait to see the first official revealed gameplay. I expect to be floored like I'm always am when they reveal a new Forza Horizon game. Or when Halo 4 was revealed for the first time, showing that forest level, man that was so good. With the power of next it's undoubtedly going to be a sight to behold.

I already feel like I will be let down if it’s not Fable.

Some rather reliable sources strongly hinted that it was Fable, it would make sense too for MS to not give up on that IP. From what I heard is that PG was actually working on a new IP, and they couldn't find a interested party. Then MS allegedly said they would pick it up if they make it into Fable.

That last part is more like hearsay, rumors what I read on ResetEra a while back.

I do remember talk about PG working on something other than FH4, and talk about other publishers wanting to pounce on it once they were to focus on it after Horzion. What ever it is I just hope it’s good/worth-it. I’m ok if it’s a walking car rpg

I believe they have hired some very talented developers from CD Projekt RED, Kojima Productions, Rockstar etc. Or am I now thinking of The Initiative?
