First PlayStation 5 Rumors Point To 8-Core Zen CPU and Navi GPU; Lots of Devkits Already Out

SemiAccurate’s Charlie Demerjian posted an article a few hours ago, claiming to have access to concrete information regarding Sony’s PlayStation 5 hardware.

The actual details are hidden behind a paywall, but we can list them for you. PlayStation 5 should feature an APU composed of an 8-Core Zen CPU and a Navi-based GPU – both customized, as usual with consoles. We don’t know much about Navi yet, but AMD has previously linked its name to “Scalability” and “Nextgen Memory”. The latter could refer to GDDR6 memory, which both Samsung and SK Hynix have recently made available.

The article also claims that the hardware will be engineered with VR optimization in mind, thus suggesting that Sony will keep banging the PlayStation VR drum.

Furthermore, according to Demerjian a large amount of development kits has been already sent to game developers. This led him to speculate that the console’s launch could be much closer than anyone thought possible, even targeting a Holiday 2018 or early 2019 release window.

Honestly, this last point seems extremely unlikely to us. While PlayStation 4 sales have slightly slowed down recently, the console can surely be pushed for a while longer thanks to highly anticipated exclusive titles such as The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone and others.

At the very earliest, we’d put a plausible PlayStation 5 release window to Fall 2019. This would also make sense if we consider that PlayStation 4 launched in Fall 2013 and PlayStation 4 Pro became available in Fall 2016.

However, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the next generation of consoles in 2020 either. This would give game developers an appropriate amount of time to craft the launch titles.

We’re still a long way from PlayStation 5 and the Xbox One’s successor, though rumors are only going to get stronger throughout this year and the next. Stay tuned on Wccftech for all the latest on next-generation hardware.

I highly doubt a large number of dev kits have gone out. Infact i doubt dev kits even exist. At best they have likely shared some tech specs with the big publishers. Also no way it comes out in 2018 or early 2019.

My feeling is that we'll see a 2019 release with all first party games from 2018 getting upgrades, likely making them native 4K AND 60fps instead of having to choose between graphics or performance. That would be possible because these games were designed to run on weaker hardware and the new CPU will be much more capable than what's in any current gen console not to mention the more powerful GPU.

It will be BC for sure and likely have some base level improvements for PS4 games the way the X1X does for base level X1 games. I also think we'll see PS4 supported for quite a while after PS5 launches, with these consoles being so much closer to PC than they used to be it won't be as hard for 3rd parties to offer multiple versions of the same game.

2020 is possible but why wait? The One X releasing in 2017 basically means MS could release another console in 2020 so why wait for that? The tech jump from 2019 to 2020 won't be huge and you'll need bigger differences in power to see tangible results at that point so they may as well jump first and work on keeping their customers in their ecosystem.

With all of this stuff coming out it's likely that dev kits are out but are very early versions, it's not like they would have final dev kits or anything close to them right now but it's totally possible for them to have sent early kits to 3rd parties.

It's either 2019 or 2020. They just want Microsoft to panic and rush their next console, then Sony can match or exceed the specs of the next Xbox all while continuing to bask in the success of the PS4. If there was ever a time to accuse Sony of using smoke and mirrors, this would be it. No chance in hell PS5 launches this year.

Death Stranding ps5 launch title confirmed?

Shenmue III ps5 pro launch

From what I'm reading, the specs are in line with what people were already expecting. What those specs mean exactly, I can't say, because I'm not a tech guy. I understand that they represent a "generational leap," which I guess is the size of leap you want, if you're leaping generations.

He charged $1000 for a view of the info, which is a bit sketchy. Otoh, he's provided reliable info in the past (e.g., about PS4's specs), so he has some credibility. On the other other hand, the speculation about 2018 release damages that credibility. We're in April. They're not going to release a console in the next 6 or 7 months when PS4 is in full stride and they haven't even announced PS5 yet. 2020 is most likely, although 2019 is a possibility, too. I'm fine with either.

There never is an early version of a dev kit. The first thing that happens is you get equivalent PC specs so you know what to aim for. But from what i hear some of the things being planned don't even exist in the mass market yet. This generation was a wash as far as tech specs are concerned. On the one hand being closer to PC helps development but we miss out on those sweet sweet console tech. I am really psyched for the next consoles.I am guessing they do a tease reveal at TGS this year and then do a full reveal at E3 2019 and launch in 2020.

What most people mean by early dev kits is approximated equivalent PC hardware. I don't see Sony announcing in a different year than the launch anymore, the PS4 was announced and launched in 2013 and the Pro was announced and launched in 2016. It makes no sense to announce a year in advance anymore, the One X was only announced as early as it was because MS wanted to try to undercut the announcement of the PS4 Pro, there was no real benefit to announcing that early and that was with an upgraded Xbox One, announcing a new gen machine that early makes even less sense. Console announcements at TGS makes no sense either, Japan may be Sony's home country but it's far from it's most important market when it comes to gaming, they'll likely hold a single event to announce the console the same way they did for the PS4 and Pro.

I call BS on that launch date. PC hardware has historically been far ahead of the console tech. Notably with the exception of the X360 launch.
Late 2018 and early 2019 is a pipe dream when not even PC GPUs have been announced with GDDR6.

The rest of the specs look good but I'm weary of them putting another power saving gimped CPU in these things.

Never said console will be revealed at TGS. A tease is entirely possible. We would be hearing more about the dev kits if they were already out. Being smaller devs we normally arent allowed to apply for them till closer to release but we would have definitely heard about it by now. You are right though maybe they dont need a tease especially since they have all the momentum this gen. Still think early 2019 is way too early. Early 2020 or maybe late 2019 at best. Also GDDR 6 is not going to be most exciting bit about the machine. *wink wink*

I think they'll announce Spring 2019 for Fall 2019 release, with the success of the PS4 they'll probably want to follow as much of that same road map as possible.

Even if the CPU isn't amazing it's still going to be miles beyond what we have now.

They need to release it this year if they want to compete with the new Atari.

Even though I agree with you about the X. I'm glad that Microsoft announced both the S & X consoles at the same E3. Announcing the S one year then announcing the X following year would have been highly criticized.

Why? The S was just a slimmed down version of the console currently on the market, a new more powerful premium machine that wouldn't be ready for a year and a half isn't really the same thing. You always run a small risk of being criticized when announcing a new console although it's usually by the late comers who didn't buy a base machine until it had already been on the market for 4 or 5 years.

Because some people would have viewed it as shady. "I bought the S, now you guys announce the X a year later?"

I think MS played their cards perfectly. The undercut the Pro announcement while building momentum for the X alongside a cheaper alternative.

I get what you are saying, the thing is the S is still just an Xbox One, yeah it has UHD playback but it's still not anywhere near the level of the One X so I don't think anyone who buys a cheaper slim console has a right to be upset if a new much more powerful machine is announced a year later.

You and I know that. But some people view all three as separate consoles.

It was kind of a unique situation and I think Microsoft considered all scenarios.

Death Stranding ps5 launch title confirmed?

Sounds good to me. Death Stranding and The Last of Us Part 2 as PS5 launch titles is likely better than anything the competition will bring to the table in the first 2 years. Throw in Dreams and i'll be on cloud 9. Boom, generation won. I'm sure TLOU2 will be playable on PS4 but we'll either get a remaster or it'll be playable through BC on PS5.

Hopefully if it does come out in 2019 they'll have visual and performance upgrades for all of their big 2018 games and beyond so you'll have true 4K games at launch and being that they were made for PS4's CPU they'll also likely be able to be 60fps with some extra work.

Not true. They have gone out.

True 4k yes. 60FPS no.

Around more/less the GTX 1080.

If they were designed to run at 30fps with this old clunker CPU that's in the PS4/Pro I don't think it'd be too much of a stretch to get these games to hit 60fps with a new CPU that's far more capable along with a much stronger GPU. I'm not talking about rebuilding the games just taking the existing ones and giving them enhancements. There could be some issues with how the compatibility works so you could be right, you never know :) I get why 60fps isn't possible on the Pro or One X when upgrading games from the standard consoles because those CPU's are just faster versions of what's already in the base consoles but the PS5 is supposed to be using a custom Ryzen.
