I think Knack is one of Sony's hidden gems. It may be just me but I haven't heard enough about this game or seen it in many news feeds. I think that needs to change. Knack looks like it will be setting the standard for 3D platformers coming next generation. It has the uniqueness and style to separate it from everything else. Could Knack be the PlayStation 4's first-party hidden jewel that helps jump start Sony's next generation?

Pre-order Knack from Amazon.

The Story
The story, of course, revolves around Knack, mankind’s secret weapon against the goblin threat. After an initial invasion by the goblins years prior, the two races have been living together on Earth, in separate societies. However, after the goblins invade a human settlement, Knack sets out to find the goblin hideout and discover how these primitive goblins got their hands on advanced tanks and airships.

Aiding Knack on his expedition: the Doctor (the inventor that brought Knack to life thanks to the mysterious power of the ancient relics), Lucas (the Doctor’s teenage assistant), Ryder (Lucas’s uncle, who is also a world-famous explorer), and Viktor (a billionaire industrialist who made his fortune mining the ancient relics that provide power for electricity, machinery, vehicles, and more).

There’s a lot more to the story, which is told through a feature film’s worth of fully mo-capped cutscenes (featuring some familiar voice acting talent). You’ll learn more about the origins of the mysterious ancient relics that power everything in the world, including Knack. Deeper mysteries abound that — as certain parties try to harness the true power of the relics — could threaten to put the whole world at risk.

The story sounds rounded enough to engage all age groups. Add in the fact that there's a feature film's worth of cut scenes and we're looking at a game that immerses you in a world filled with gameplay and sit back and enjoy the story aspects.

The Transformative Powers of Knack
As you may have seen in our other previews, Knack is made of relics, and by absorbing more and more of them he can grow from his original 3-foot tall size to 6 feet tall, 15 feet tall, and even 30 feet tall. On their way to the goblin hideout, Knack makes his way through an ice cave and, thanks to Lucas, discovers the ability to absorb ice, just like relics, to make himself bigger and stronger.

This changes up the gameplay in different ways. For example, once Knack makes it out of the cave, the ice starts to melt and he’ll have to defeat tough enemies before he shrinks back down to a smaller size. Throughout the game, Knack will find he can absorb different kinds of materials, such as…
  • Metal Knack: an extremely powerful form, but being made of metal also means you’re magnetic… which can lead to some interesting problems!
  • Wood Knack: one of the biggest versions of Knack in the game. And while wood is easy to find, it does burn easily! That said, if you’re on fire, you can use that to access some extra areas…
We’ll be back soon to talk more about the world of Knack, including how we’re sharing the fun with our local 2-player co-op mode. In the meantime, you can pre-order Knack now via PSN and download it day one.

The dynamic nature of Knack's powers will make sure the game never gets stale. One of my pet peeves are games where repetition is what is needed to succeed and creativity is an afterthought. When a game breaks those boundaries, as it seems that Knack is, it keeps me coming back for more. Knack looks like it will deliver and that's nothing but good news for Sony.

With WatchDogs and DriveClub not available at launch now, I may just pick this up instead. Probably would have played it eventually but might as well add it to the launch day list.

i am on the fence here... the game play looks stale, but i like the vision behind the game. who am i kidding, I will still get it....

Nice to have a game I can share with the kids at launch.

Although I'm not feeling the look of the Knack character itself.
Needs to be cute or comical...endearing in some way.

You Should Probably Expect to Die a Lot in Knack on PS4

Game over

One thing that we’ve noticed when playing Knack in the past is that the game’s hard. We don’t just mean tricky, but full-on rage-inducing, stamp on the DualShock 4 difficult. That’s because, despite its cuddly appearance, the title is designed to take you back to the days of PSone favourites such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon – neither of which were a walk in the park.

“I know it looked cute, but [Crash Bandicoot] was a brutally difficult game,” director Mark Cerny toldGame Revolution. “Even on the normal difficulty setting, [Knack] is designed to be pretty challenging. Playtests show that there are roughly 20-30 deaths over the course of one level for typical core gamers.” If you need further proof, the system architect himself – a renowned video game veteran – still needs at least five tries to get through a single stage.

If that sounds about as enjoyable as replacing your eyeballs with hot toffee apples, then know that the title will be a lot more accessible on its simplest setting. “On easy, it's straightforward enough that someone can play it as their first console game ever," the Marble Madness creator added. "Core gamers are the initial audience for the PS4, but I just wanted to be sure that there was something for the rest of the family.”

Earlier today, Sony revealed a little more about the upcoming next generation platformer, including some of the titular hero's different elemental forms. The Japanese giant’s promising to show a lot more of the game over the coming weeks, as it edges ever closer to its 15th November launch. You may want to brace yourself for the impending challenge while you still have the chance.

$10 and that is my final offer. Knack just doesn't look fun. It's just not worth the full price tag to risk it being a stinker.

Knack is no platformer. But if you are looking for a cartoony God of War kind of game, Knack is like it.

Thanks. I couldn't figure out what kind of game it was on my own. I'm glad you were able to help.

I have read stuff comparing this game to Crash Bandicoot. I see very little resemblance (some but hardly). This looks like a brawler and not a platformer.

I wish they had just remade Crash Bandicoot. It would have been an awesome launch title and brought a ton of people back into the fold. I personally enjoyed Crash even more than the Mario series.

Obviously it's not my call but as it stands I am still looking for a PS4 game to buy and this one just doesn't do it for me.

They don't own the CB IP anymore.

So I hadn't thought about CB for years until the comparision came up and had no idea what had happened to it. After your reply I did some looking and see Activision has the licence.

All they would have to do is make a next gen update of the old games (think better graphics and get rid of all that slowdown when things got crazy on screen) and Sony or MS should have wrote them a blank check to have it ready for launch and it would have really created some excitement....a lot more than this Knack game. JHMO of course.

The only part that does resemble Crash is at least one level which is like Crash where a big monster is chasing you in the background and you are running towards the screen.

Imagine how much more fun this game would be on the X1.

Nah it would still look weak. :p

Dare say Drive Clubs delay has just helped its sales a bit.
