A sequel to the 1996 Earth invasion hit blockbuster Independence Day has been confirmed by 20th Century Fox.

The movie, produced by Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser is scheduled to be released on June 24, 2016. Emmerich "is in negotiations to direct" the film, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter. Jeff Goldblum is said to be in talks to make a return, but it's thought unlikely that Will Smith, who played a fighter pilot in the original, will appear in the sequel.

That's actually pretty cool. That giant ship is just so iconic in the late 90s era, it'll be cool to see it return. Personally, I think the humans and aliens should face off on a more equal level. The unholy mess followed by humans getting their act together is just a dated formula at this point. I think this could be a very good and memorable movie if done right.

I liked Independence Day.

Just reading this thread for the first time now, and this is my first time hearing about it. Apparently it's being overshadowed by the likes of Jurassic World and Star Wars.

To be fair, this is pretty recent news and has only been greenlit where Star Wars 7 and Jurassic World are setting the stage for a future release with trailers. Give it time and they'll be able to jump start the hype train once the trailer is out. That said, not having Will Smith seems like missed opportunity, even if he'd come with a hefty price tag.

Ah, yeah that's very unfortunate.
