Easily the best show that was ever cancelled. I hope it does happen, but it has to happen with everyone that was involved.

Filing this under “I’ll believe it when I see it” comes news that has fans of Firefly and Serenity all jacked up with hope. Joss Whedon’s short-lived but hugely beloved SciFi series, which continued with the 2005 film Serenity, has continued to hold its fandom. Finally, after years of fans clamoring for more of Joss Whedon’s space western, someone at FOX thinks it might be a good idea to see the remaining crew members of space ship Serenity return for second season/reboot of Firefly. Whaa? Is this for reals? Are fans finally going to get their wishes/dreams fulfilled? Well, yeah, but it’s all predicated on one very important condition.
Fox Broadcasting President of Entertainment, David Madden, recently made a comment that has gotten everyone around the Interwebz abuzz. At a panel at the TCA 2017, Madden informed Rotten Tomatoes that he is open to a Firefly reboot, but ONLY if Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, The Avengers, and Toy Story) is on board.
“Given the success of Fox’s reboots of The X-Files and 24, and Prison Break returning this year, Madden said he’d be open to a Firefly reboot if Joss Whedon himself wanted to revisit it. Madden suspects Whedon is now too busy with movies, and he would not consider doing Firefly without Whedon.”
That’s an important distinction for fans since it was Whedon’s creativity and filmmaking magic that made Firefly the cult classic it was. As fans know, it was canceled due to Fox’s poor management and promotion of the series. They showed the episodes out of order, didn’t promote the show, and canceled it without airing the last few episodes. Whedon took the cancellation personally and, at the time, said he would no longer work with the company.
