"Backwards compatibility is coming to PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Now is only part of the story. A well-placed source working with Sony's streaming service reveals that only PlayStation 3 titles are currently scheduled to use the "gameplay over IP" cloud service. PS1 and PS2 titles are set to follow the more conventional route of running locally under emulation on Sony's latest console - but with the possibility of HD visual enhancements.

"...Internally, PlayStation 3's firmware contains emulators for PS1, PS2 and even the handheld PSP, while Vita is capable of running PS1 and Vita titles virtually flawlessly using the same technology. In short, there's a proven codebase that can only get better for the vastly more powerful PS4.

"Our information suggests that the same internal emulator strategy is planned for PlayStation 4, and we understand that Sony is actively pursuing the ability for older titles to run without the blurry upscaling seen on PS3, suggesting that native HD resolutions are being targeted. Assuming this intention carries through to final code, we'll be seeing an effect similar to the resolution scaling seen on unofficial PC emulation of Sony's consoles, as well as a great many of the "HD remasters" we saw on PS3 - where original assets were rendered at a higher resolution, often without any actual remastering at all."

Good news, if true. I'd rather download PS1/2 games off PSN rather than stream them over PS Now. And the potential upscaling sounds like a nice bonus.

That would be big for people who've owned a PS1 or PS2 or PS3. I know a few who've been loyal to the Xbox brand and never got the PS2 or PS3 so a chance to play the blockbusters on the two systems would be welcomed.

Yeah, there are half a dozen PS2 titles I'd like to play (Shadow of Colossus, a few Ratchet and Clanks, a Sly Cooper or two, maybe God of War and Okami). This would make it a lot easier to just get a PS4 and not have to be concerned about streaming quality for those titles.

I read through the first couple of pages on GAF, related to this issue. They seemed to think it was more likely it will just be downloads via PSN, rather than capability to play discs. But I don't really know. It would be nice if people with a large PS1/PS2 disc collection could use them on PS4.

Damn I hope so otherwise if they do this it's worthless as hell if I'm rebuying any games. More then likely your right being as that is how they did PS2 games on PS3 in the later years. The more you think about it yeah I doubt they will let you ran the games from the disc :( makes Now less appealing and won't help Sony make more money.

I still have a good 40 PS2 games and hundreds of PS1 games on disc. The PS1 has been in storage for a while and the PS2 went into storage over the holidays. I wish I didn't have to rebuy.

Sorry, I'm working and didn't read the article fully. Any indication if already purchased digital titles will carry over? I have a pretty nice digital collection of PS1 titles because of PS+ that would be nice to play upres'd on PS4.

I'm hoping the emulation is via disc cause I just picked up 100 PS2 games+ for $75.

Damn bro good games? The is a great deal. How you get so many for so cheap? I'm not f***ing kidding I'd pay Sony $100 for a good emulation app that let's you use disk for PS4. So I don't get my hopes up if they it my bet it be for downloads like on PS3.

I didn't see anything in the article about that, one way or the other.

Truthfully I just want to play PS3 games on my PS4. Most of the big PS2 games got the HD treatment. And PS1 games are for my Vita.

All good games and rare games consisting of JRPGs like Final Fantasy X, X-2, XII, Star Ocean, Monster Rancher, Wild Arms, Grandia, and so on to Fighting Games like Capcom vs Marvel, Tekken, Street Fighter, Gitaroo Man, King of Fighters, Soul Calibur and so on to Nich Games like Okami, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and so on to Action/Adventure/Platform games like Metal Gear, Sly, Jax and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Psyconauts, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, Haunting Grounds, God of War, Rygar, and so on.

Most of the games are like $.50 each to $3 each.

All of them is disc only so no manual or case. Just disc which I don't mind. I just bought 128 disc holder case on eBay for like $15.

Check your local GameStop. 75% off on all PS2 games and accessories.

I'm hoping this will be used for disc based games and will have support for remote play.

Make it happen and i'll buy a PS4 the day after. I just want to be able to play all my games across one console without any bullsh!t. Is that so much to ask?

come on guys we can dream but lets not BS it will be for download games only. I hope I'm wrong but I doubt it. Making
emulation for disc based games is not going to make Sony bank.
