PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech compatible headsets at launch

So, can someone explain exactly how these are different than normal headphones?

or headsets, that advertise 3d or 7.1 audio
Most of those 5.1 or whatever headphones aren't compatible with Atmos for Headphone because it's algorithm based, and mimics the acoustics through 2 speakers instead of using all of those goofy mini drivers. I would have to think that Tempest works the same way, with 2 standard drivers... That's why I am really wondering what's really different about a Tempest headphone? Maybe it's like a certification? If Tempest is proprietary to their headset, that's kinda stupid, IMO. It would be completely backwards from what Dolby is finally doing, letting you use any pair of good headphones.

Don't think they are.

Think of 3D audio as a more advanced mix. You shouldn't need special headphones, any set of headphones should be able to take advantage.
OK, that was my hunch. Whew! So, it's just basically marketing then? That doesn't bother me at all, but it can be confusing for most people when they see some headphones with the name on it. Dolby Atmos Headphone was confusing at first because most people expected them to go proprietary with their headphone hardware. That's why they do the licensing now instead of physical, but they don't try to badge the headphones anymore, I don't believe. If they did, it would probably come with a software key.

Pretty much, yeah. At the end of the day speakers are speakers.
