PS5 News + Speculation

Thinking of launch titles, it would be pretty cool if the PS5 launched with Horizon Zero Dawn 2 or Spiderman 2. But to be honest, I like to see titles like those later in the console's lifetime as devs really get a handle on the PS5 and can really take advantage of the architecture. More than likely we're going to get a bunch of tech demo games on launch and within the launch window.

I am hoping for GT Sport 2 as a launch title personally.

I would be shocked if either the Playstation or Xbox had a meaningful advantage in terms of raw horsepower. What I'm really interested in seeing is what Sony can do with this added power and their first party studios, as well as a new VR offering.

This is what is ‘official’ for PS 5 so far, with links (credit to @blueisviolet on Twitter).
I’m curious for anyone in this thread, how much of an advantage would be considered meaningful? I mean, if there is ANY difference it will he fought about for years, I’m sure. But I’m curious as to what amount of difference would actually make a difference...?

I agree. I think what its going to come down to is how friendly/intuitive the dev kits/instructions are to developers and how generous the platform holders are to 3rd party devs in terms of support ( i.e. marketing, development funding, platform incentives). I expect the next gen to be a tooth and nail fight fight between Sony and Microsoft quite honestly. And if the platform holders are fighting to continuously improve their respective platform for consumers and devs alike, we might be in for a golden age of gaming next gen.

I wouldn't hold my breath for that given PDs development history. I wouldn't rule out enhancements for the game though. PS5 IS going to be BC right?

Well, the only reason I thought it could happen is that they haven't had a game for a couple years now. It will be like 3 years. And during these past 3 years they have been adding track after track, route after route and cars and cars and more cars. EVERY month STILL. I have a feeling that this content is not only for GT Sport, but is being made for the next game.

Just wishful thinking on my part.

As for BC, the rumor is that PS4 games will work on PS5.

I would hope most of the games released in the past year or two receives PS5 patches yeah.

I hope so too but I'm kind of doubting it now. I'd love to see God of War, Horizon ZD, Days Gone and Spider-Man all get a few graphical enhancements and 60fps.

This was from earlier in the year:

If this is still correct (that’s a base PS4 he’s referring to), it will end up being closer to 5700 or 5700XT....roughly the 9+ TF range.

There are rumblings that Sony had originally planned to launch the PS5 this year, which is why all those numbers came out so early. For whatever reason, they pushed it to next year. It’s too late in the grand scheme of development to make any major changes to the architecture, so they have been trying to squeeze everything they can out of the architecture that they have currently, which is why the apparent heating issues occurred.

If the rumors of the PS5 Pro are true, maybe this is why? But I can’t see Sony doing that personally, at least not for a couple years. They have a big enough user base, so regardless of what they put out there, people will buy it. And their devs are super talented, so they’ll make it look/play good regardless.

But maybe they’ll take a Lockhart approach and do 2 as well...? I wouldn’t bet on it, but anything is possible.

What I've read was that they had planned a 2019 release but that changed in 2017, I have yet to read anyone credible mention anything about overheating.

I am sure any heating issues will be resolved as PS has never had overheating issues.

I really doubt the GPU is going to clock that high for 2 reasons:

Power budget,
Heat output.

Although it would be more expensive, they could have a GPU with more CU's and a lower clock that would draw less power and output less heat than a GPU with less CU's with a higher clock speed and be the same performance.

So just to make sure we are on the same page, Digital Foundry is no longer a credible source?
