PS5 News + Speculation

I will say that the jump for the Pro really doesn't impress, but going from the One to the One X was huge. So much so that I look at the One like a friggn' 360, lol.

The other thing to consider are that so much power was sucked up in the chase for resolution. Now it's been (generally) reached, they can start using that overhead for the actual games. Couple that with an actual CPU upgrade.... Well, I think this next gen will be pretty special.

That said- I'm not super-excited yet. I absolutely have to see what they are doing. I know I'll be getting it, but I need to see to get my blood up.

Good point about the power being available for things other than resolution-chasing.

Re. the mid-gen console upgrades ... I think they are probably part of why I'm not super-pumped. The jump between generations isn't as large as it would normally be. It feels more like an incremental upgrade after a few years, rather than a huge generational leap. I guess the upside is that as a Pro owner, it'll be the flip side of what we saw with the next-gen upgrades, i.e., a bigger jump for Pro owners than for X owners (not meaning to get into "vs" stuff, just trying to see the upside).

That's okay. I suppose I should re-title the thread and open it to speculation, rumors, and so forth. There was a separate rumor thread, but it's buried a couple pages deep, and we don't really need two separate threads.

I think a focus on improved CPUs is a benefit to everyone. It's easy enough to scale down a game from 4K HDR to a basic 1080p, but it's damn near impossible to do really exciting CPU-bound stuff and still support the poor CPUs that are inside these boxes. As much as I love the MS commitment to forward and backward compatibility in the XBox family, I think anything with actual next-gen AI or gameplay will suffer tremendously on my Day 1 Xbox One, which fortunately should be retired to one of my sons' rooms by that point. But having this new gen of chips be the baseline now should enable a whole lot more from developers, although we'll have to wait and see who will run with the additional resources and who will give us minor upgrades.

Well, the good news is that part of why MS made the OS a Windows based OS is so that they could get better compatibility for things like BC. I think the OS will be handling that part, so the change in CPU wont matter. I do not care to have the new machines held back by the old. They can wither and die as long as I can continue with my existing library.

I still think some people aren't totally understanding MS's "commitment" when it comes to games working in the xbox family, that talk was mostly done around the announcement of the One X and even then they said at some point the old machines will have to be left behind. You can't have a "next gen" game developed from the ground up for a Ryzen CPU work the same way if at all on a jaguar. There really isn't much reason for them to try even if they could, by the time the next xbox comes out the X1 will still be roughly 30 million behind where the 360 was when it's generation ended.

You started with, "You see it the wrong way." That is literally telling me how to think. It's not a smart approach, if you want to persuade or even be listened to.

Putting that aside, I looked at the list you posted, and nothing there was a surprise to me. "Increased attention to detail, better animations, better bullet damage, ability to open more doors...." Yes, I understand that. An increase in power will bring all that with it, at least potentially. That's not news to me. It doesn't change my opinion.

Again you came off uninformed. hence "You see it the wrong way".

That was only a quick short list The impressive part is getting all that one game and bringing realism in video games to a new height and most importantly innovative gameplay.

.

smh. You're not getting it.

Let's move on.

1080p/checkerboard 4k is better for consoles. IMO Too much overhead is waisted on resolution when it can be used for AI and new gameplay innovation. But console gamers are so busy chasing PC they don't see what's important.

Ps5 Game News/Rumors

Guerilla confirmed HZD2, Killzone and a new IP I'm in development a few months ago.

Insomniac confirmed a new Marvel game plus Ratchet & Clank in development.

SE hiring for new Ps5 exclusive

A lot Bloodborne 2 hints and teasers.

Sont Santa Monica is free but don't expect GoW anytime soon

Sony Japan Studio will have a launch game for sure. Tripple A new IP

We can expect GT at launch.

smh. You're not getting it.

Let's move on.

The opposite. Agree to disagree...

From an interview with Jack Tretton:

GamesBeat: How do you feel about Sony right now? It looks like another cycle is about to come around.

Tretton: I think they’re very well-positioned. The leader of the prior generation is always in a good position going into the new generation. From what I’ve read about the specs of PlayStation 5, it sounds impressive. Their business model obviously worked well for them the last time around, and it doesn’t look like they’re going to deviate from that. They’ll be well-positioned. But I do think they’ll face exponentially more competition than they did the last time around.

Microsoft should give them a better run for their money, and Stadia is a new wrinkle in the market that didn’t exist in 2013. Nintendo is more relevant this time around. It’s going to be a much more competitive market. There are new players. But they’ve learned some valuable lessons in this generation. It should be great for everyone in the business, whether you’re a developer or a gamer. It’s going to keep everyone on their toes.

Next gen might the first gen where one of the Big 3 doesn't face plant. This gen, both MS and Nintendo tripped over themselves like buffoons, and the generation before that, Sony looked stupid. But next gen, we might have all 3 of the big players firing on all (well, most) cylinders. Could be interesting.

It's just my perspective. If other people have different views, that's fine. I'm not into pushing my opinions on others. There isn't a "right" way to see this. There are a lot of possible perspectives. At the end of the day, we're dealing in opinion, preference, and values, not some kind of objective truth. I don't think we all need to agree or see things the same way. I don't think that's possible or desirable.

If other people are pumped and enthusiastic, cool. I won't try to change your mind or get you to see things the same way I do. That's not my style. I'm just expressing how I feel, at this point in time. It may change. I'm sure by this time next year, the media will be dominated by discussions of tech specs and enthusiastic predictions of things to come. I'll probably get swept up in it like everyone else.

And to be clear, I want to have the best version of the Playstation available, and I know this will be a significant upgrade, so I'm looking forward to it. I'm hearing it'll be in the range of 12 to 13 TF, which is about 3x the Pro, then you add some more to that because of the CPU, SSD, etc. That's a nice upgrade. I'll buy it. I'm just not feeling "woohoo!" about it, that's all.
It isn't 3x the Pro...the Pro is a mere graphical upgrade to a game still extremly limited by the weak PS4. As Iwas saying before, your point of view here seems extrely narrow. You seem like all your expectations are based on mere graphic upgrades and totally ignores the potential elsewhere....like physics, A.I, Sound, etc.

It isn't about trying to force opinions. It is about highlighting the bigger picture...a picture your comments imply you don't see.

Just because I didn't list every potential use to which additional power could be put, doesn't mean I'm not aware of them. I can make long lists of possibilities, too. Anyone can. I'm just not that excited by it.

There could be many reasons for my lack of excitement, but it's not lack of information. Maybe because all these potentialities and promises just seem like abstractions to me. Maybe because I've heard many of them before, in the transition to this gen. Maybe because many of them just don't interest me all that much (I've never been particularly sensitive to graphical or performance niceties). Maybe because they don't seem particularly groundbreaking. Maybe because the console releases are so far away. Maybe because I'm fairly content with what we have already. Maybe all of the above.

Like I've said, I'm not trying to make an argument or make a case. I'm just saying how I feel. If you're pumped about next gen, good. Spread your enthusiasm.

I can see where Andy is coming from, we've heard about advancements in AI and physics for a long time but it doesn't seem like much has happened in that regard over the past couple of generations. I know many will blame the hardware and when it comes to physics that's true but I think the AI issues have more to do with the developers than anything else.

I get that we have heard all the AI, Physic stuff before and it amounted to not much, but....when things do happen they have a profound affect on the experience. These are serious under developed aspects of gaming too and have to make big jumps sooner rather than later.

We already sound is a next gen focus. I think people seriously underestimate the importence of sound. Hell, the sound and SSD features will make a huge difference in console gaming.

AI can be very resource intensive.

But this is my point. The next gen sounds like it should have enough power to take us to the next level of AI and physics. Previous gens just didn't have the raw power needed.

I think you just heard my sarcastic remark as implying that was all I was aware of. I don't blame you; I can see how you could hear it that way. But hopefully by now it's clear that's not the case.

If AI, physics, and so forth make huge leaps forward, that will be great. I guess I'm in a "show me" mode. I'll need to see it in action before I get excited.

The absolute worst part of this Gen is that near the end of last Gen there seemed to be a lot of games starting to push the physics/destruction integration... Then nothing. I can only attribute it to the resolution chase.

I get that there is in general more sophisticated integration in animation systems, but there seems to be a general step back in complexity outside of convoluted loot progression systems.

Well if the Xbox E3 leak is true, then you may well seen it in 3 weeks time.

Yet another leak/rumor

This falls in line with the rumors that Navi is Sony exclusive and MS uses Vega based GPU

The best chefs in the world can't cook with only a lighter. AI is something that would benefit from a much stronger CPU than what's out there now, and the fact that both next-gen consoles seem to be promising(*) actually performant CPUs might push developers to actually start to build in more CPU-constrained functionality knowing that the baseline of the console market will now support it.

(*) - Of course, it's just promises at this point, though I assume anyone with a dev kit should at least have a decent idea of how committed they are to said promises.
