PS5 News + Speculation

This would explain the ‘leaked’ specs discrepancies

Most of the "leaks" lately have been pretty consistent haven't they? Remember how people were saying MS was going to do the same thing until they actually announced Scarlett? I don't think it really makes sense for either company to do that, it causes issues with production and it creates confusion at retail.

Over on neogaf someone posted that the Japanese guy who was talking about this wasn't "leaking" anything it was just him speculating so this is very unlikely to happen.

I was just thinking about the design of the PS5 and the leaked images. Whatever the shell ends up looking like, I hope that there's a PS1 grey option for the color. I'm feeling a bit nostalgic for that and I'm kind of tired of black consoles.

See, I can't wait for special editions to come out, so I am sure I will end up getting the normal black one on release day. But I might actually trade it in for a special edition when they release them down the road. I have never had a special edition colored console besides the Scorpio Day One Edition.

Before they do, Cerny wants to clarify something. When we last discussed the forthcoming console, he spoke about its ability to support ray-tracing, a technique that can enable complex lighting and sound effects in 3D environments. Given the many questions he’s received since, he fears he may have been ambiguous about how the PS5 would accomplish this—and confirms that it’s not a software-level fix, which some had feared. “There is ray-tracing acceleration in the GPU hardware,” he says

Can't wait to see what changes the new controller will have other than what's been mentioned.

At least that puts an end to the people saying that the RT was software based. I still think the whole RT thing is going to be very minimal next gen, on very powerful GPU's right now it's cutting performance in half.

I like what they are doing with the controller, more advanced rumble is always welcome and a larger battery is also a nice addition. I like that they are being more transparent, even admitting that the devkit "leak" is real.

Yeah, it's good to hear. i think you are wrong about raytracing though. Games with and without it are going to look markedly different. PCs today can still get above 60fps with raytracing on, and given consoles can get away with 30fps, I think that we will see much more of it than you think.

I highly doubt we will get any raytracing of any significant kind at least not at 4K and not intially. A RTX 2080 ti struggles to run Control, arguably the best game implemented raytracing at 4K at 30 fps. And I highly doubt the ps4 is going to have rtx 2080ti level gpu. Now if you mean ray traced effects at 1080p, that's possible, but why buy a new console to run games at 1080p? Maybe later on in the consoles life time the developers and engineer can figure a way out to squeeze some more performance out of the PS5 but I don't believe we're going to see any significant ray tracing early on or at 4K.

Most PC tests I see online are also running at 1440p or even down to 1080p, they aren't as fixated on 4K.

I'm sure they'll find some way to work a bit of it in here and there but kind of like 8K just because it's capable doesn't mean it's going to happen all that much although we likely will get more RT than 8K content. I'd love to be wrong and I hope I am but I don't want performance to tank for RT.

USB type C is good. Also excited about the new rumble. Hopefully they scrap the touch pad.
