PS5 News + Speculation

Most PC tests I see online are also running at 1440p or even down to 1080p, they aren't as fixated on 4K.
I agree about the res. Hopefully we will see more visual options next gen. Still, I imagine the optimization for consoles will help get more bang for their computational buck...

I highly doubt we will get any raytracing of any significant kind at least not at 4K and not intially. A RTX 2080 ti struggles to run Control, arguably the best game implemented raytracing at 4K at 30 fps. And I highly doubt the ps4 is going to have rtx 2080ti level gpu. Now if you mean ray traced effects at 1080p, that's possible, but why buy a new console to run games at 1080p? Maybe later on in the consoles life time the developers and engineer can figure a way out to squeeze some more performance out of the PS5 but I don't believe we're going to see any significant ray tracing early on or at 4K.

Oh, I don't think we'll get the full-fat Raytracing experience (not even PCs do outside of like, that Quake RT release), but We will see it used piece-meal for more refined, accurate lighting. I bet we see a lot of hybrid rendering. Either way, it'll be another layer of visual polish.

I agree. I will be happy with any sort of advancement. But I would love for 60fps and 4K as the standard first.Or even 1440.

Very interesting tidbit from resetera:

Yeah. PlayStation 5 was originally planned to come out next month. The software engineering needed to get BC 101% right was not progressing as fast as they needed.

It is my belief that this is one of (but not the only) reasons Sony delayed PlayStation 5 to holiday 2020.

They made this change in 2017.

I'm shocked that those rumors of PS5 potentially coming out in 2019 actually had something to it, Sony was looking to just grandslam out into a new gen and get a year jump on MS... the laid back PlayStation experience and no show E3's make a lot more sense with this in mind.

Someone was claiming the other day that it was going to be no sooner than 2021. Some insider or something.

Apparently BC might still be a problem for some games..? I remember hearing about this a long time ago though, something about the architecture...? I’m sure the big ones will be a priority, but I also wonder if existing games will have enhancements...?

I have all the big games, so I am sure all mine will work.

maybe something to do with azure/xcloud???

A new patent discovered by German website Techtastic, however, suggests the Dualshock 5 (or whatever it ends up being called) could signify a huge shift to cloud gaming for the PS4's upcoming successor, revealing a controller that connects directly over the internet, and not to the PS5 itself.

The patent, filed a few weeks ago by Sony through the World Intellectual Property Organization, describes a "a controller device for user interactivity with a server of a cloud gaming system is provided", accompanied by a sketch showing the user connecting their controller to the console remotely through an online server.

"The controller device communicates directly to an access device for connection to a network that connects the controller device to the server without connecting to a client device", reads the patent, "wherein the server receives and processes the inputs to render gameplay video that is transmitted over the network for rendering to a display device that is local to the controller device."

So... Like the Stadia controller does. Still, if it is just an extra function, it could possibly reduce regular online gaming input lag.

IF this the case I am expecting a prepped and ready launch and launch year. Tbh I think we can guess the studios who will have games ready for year 1: Bluepoint Games, Guerrilla Games, Japan Studio and maybe shock Polyphony digital.

IGN is stupid. It's not called "the Zen2". Zen 2 is the AMD architecture that the CPU will be utilizing.

Wait, so the Intel Coffee Lake doesn't mean that Alan Wake is coming back to an Intel-exclusive console? Pre-order cancelled, except I couldn't find anywhere to preorder one in the first place.

To be fair, I'm not sure if I'm more annoyed that people are calling this Zen 2 or that (probably the same idiots) are referring to the current CPU chips as Zen 3.

Hmmm if it has the power I don’t think most people would mind paying $500 for it these days...?

Rumored $500+ PlayStation 5 Launch Price Would be a Disaster for Sony

A European retailer operating out of Slovakia appears to have revealed not only the release date of Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 5 console but the launch price as well.

The listing on retailer Progamingshop’s website allows users to pre-order the PlayStation 5 for the princely sum of 499.99€ ($556) in anticipation of release on Dec. 4 next year.

Slovakian Retailer ‘Leaks’ PlayStation 5 Release Date and Price

Programingshop is indeed a genuine retailer, so there’s no doubt the listing in real, but it isn’t exactly the most polished we’ve seen.

The image of the PlayStation 5 is quite simply a copy-paste of the product renders based on the devkit patent created by web site Let’sGoDigital. It’s the closest we currently have to the real thing, but it doesn’t exactly instill confidence for potential buyers having to part with 500 €.

As for the description, it cleverly markets all the little snippets we’ve been privy to up until now into a semi-cohesive blurb but doesn’t offer anything new in terms of specifications and features; AMD Radeon Navi based GPU, SSD, new haptic controller, and crazy backward compatibility.

Although the release date is very specific, it’s hard to argue it’s not in the right ballpark. Sony’s announcement last month pinpointed a holiday period 2020 launch, and Dec. 4 seems as likely as any other day in the lead up the Christmas period. We’ll reserve judgment on that one until we get official word from the horse’s mouth.

The Price Has To Be Right
If there’s any truth to the 500€ / $550 price tag, then Sony may be playing with fire. We immediately get flashbacks to the ill-fated PlayStation 3 pricing announcement at E3 2006. The $500 and $600 price points (differing based on hard-drive capacity), primed competitor Microsoft’s Xbox 360 for success, and we all know how that turned out. The stratospheric success of the PlayStation 2 blinkered Sony’s vision for the future and it clearly misread the market.

While Sony has done incredibly well this generation both in terms of unit sales and garnering positive public opinion from gamers, an exorbitant PlayStation 5 launch price could quite easily undo all of that hard work.

Sony and Microsoft generally manufacture and sell new consoles at a loss only to recuperate costs via game sales later on, so there is a business incentive to raise prices to mitigate the use of much more expensive next-generation components. This makes sense. But the issue lies in whether the average consumer is willing to fork out $550 for an unproven product, especially if Microsoft’s Project Scarlet is priced more competitively.

As always, early listings aren’t to be taken as gospel so throw in a pint glass-sized dose of salt on this one.

I really don't think $500 is a potential disaster, especially if MS is charging the same amount. The core gamer who buys consoles at launch wants the best they can get for the price, the masses who fill out the rest of the user base don't buy in right away usually. I would love it if we got what the rumored specs are at $400 but I'm not counting on that.

I paid $600 for the PS3 around launch. It still works and allows me to do special things with it, so it was a good purchase. Not sure if I'll be doing the same for the PS5 if that'll be the price.

Sony is claiming the PS5 will be the worlds "fastest" console:
