It's barely weaker and it has advantages over the Series X in some ways , the money went to different areas but this thing likely cost right around the same ballpark to make as the Series X.

I don't disagree. That is why they have to cost the same.

I think we can't be sure yet - Sony's got less silicon in the GPU but much higher clocks and having to volt pretty heavily to get there, so the yields may be noticeably different. Plus the SSD controller is custom, rather than an off-the-shelf one which may add some as well. But I also presume they as well as MS went into this with a target price point for their cost even before the sell price target and I don't imagine Sony's would have been set significantly higher.

If Sony prices higher it's because they can't afford the loss but I'm sure we'll see a ton of "arrogant Sony has returned" nonsense, there are already people trying to give MS credit for Sony's pricing if they go $399 digital and $499 standard even though those prices have been predicted and even "leaked" for a while. Bottom line is these are meant to be consumer products and they'll get it out at as low of a price as they can afford to so they can get their adoption rate up as quickly as possible. They aren't going to try to make $50-$100 profit on a console at launch but they also aren't likely going to be willing to lose more than $100 on a box either.

I wouldn't doubt Sony's pricing was going to depend on what MS will be charging. Why else would they wait? MS would have been the same if they went second. It was a game of chicken. I still theorize that the reason Sony still hasn't revealed price is that it may in fact, be more expensive and they need to put some distance from MS's reveal.

Hopefully we know soon, because the wait is ridiculous...

kinda agree, but the reveal wasn’t intentional, who knows how long we would have had to wait if it didn’t leak.

Also need to factor in the extra plastic in the casing, that is larger. The exterior of the PS5 based on the shape, size and amount of plastic needed will add to that cost.

I still don't see how removing the disk drive will get them 100 dollars cheaper.

Every game sold on that console will be through PSN, they will make a lot more per game sold that way, 70% of games sold for PS4 last quarter were digital. They would likely be more willing to take the up front loss here because the potential on a quick return is higher and they'll make a lot more over the lifetime of that console sale than they will with the standard version, it also eliminates used game sales and I'm fairly sure the people who would want a digital console are often people who buy a higher percentage of games too.

Could be that they were waiting so they could go as high as they possibly could. Maybe be they hoped Microsoft would make a mistake. Possibly even were willing to undercut them still or didn't want to give Microsoft the option to undercut them.

Either way I don't think this puts enough distance to cover for a bad price and I also think that argument works towards Microsoft as well. You could have said if they were willing to go to a good price why were they waiting.

I still don't see how removing the disk drive will get them 100 dollars cheaper.

Possibly reasons

1. Perceived value. Phones do this with storage difference that have huge price differences that don't reflect the manufacture price.
2. Increase in digital revenue makes them feel its worth it
3. Want to hit as cheap as price as possible but they don't manufacture as many. 80% of PS3s at launch were the $600 model. So they could get good press and not actually take that big of a beating

If it's $450 with the goal being $400, then it was never $100 to begin with, it's $50. This is why removing the drive gets them closer to that mark. So by keeping the drive in puts them at $500

It is clear that Sony has revised down the production volume of the next-generation game machine "PlayStation (PS) 5" to be released within the year by 4 million units in this term (ending March 2021) to about 11 million units. Became. The production yield of the specially designed integrated circuit "System on Chip (SOC)", which corresponds to the heart of PS5, is not stable.

Due to the non-disclosure of the information, several parties have revealed it on condition of anonymity. In July , the company informed its parts suppliers that it would double its production volume, considering that the consumption of nesting due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection would support demand even after the year-end sales season.

According to the person concerned, the yield of SOC has been sluggish at about 50%, and the production volume has to be reviewed. He said that the yield is improving, but the quality has not reached a stable level. A Sony spokeswoman declined to comment.

Sony stocks were trading in the plus zone on the 15th, but after receiving news reports, they fell 3.1% from the previous day to 8001 yen.

US Microsoft last week, in the "Xbox (Xbox) Series X" $ 499 (Price in Japan is 49,980 yen), the "same series S" does not have a disk drive 299 US dollars (up 32,980 yen) 11 Announced to be released on the 10th of March . There is a view that the announcement of affordable prices poses a threat to Sony.

Sony is expected to announce details such as price and release date at the PS5 related video event to be held on the 17th. Masahiro Wakasugi, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, expects the cheapest case to be priced at $ 449 for a model with a disk drive and $ 399 for a model without a disk drive.

Funny thing is Redtech said yields were going better than expected just a month or so ago.

I’m planning on waiting on both systems, but I might try for a preorder just to throw it up on eBay. If this is true, it’ll go for at least double the price for the holidays.

They are better, worse, and exactly the same all at once here in the rumordome.

Well he isn't banned at resetera. He does seem to be banned on GAF but it isn't related to his info being reliable or not.
He has been problematic at Gaf.

And he also mentioned that MS was no longer investing in Xbox as a fact, but 8 months later MS had grown to 15 Xbox studios, which he was called out for being unreliable. He is notorious for being anti-xbox as well for quite awhile.

Like I said he wasn't banned for his info so that doesn't really matter that he is. Nothing really wrong with any of those posts anyway.

He has got a lot right and has credibility which doesn't mean he is never wrong. Some of these supposed insiders never get anything right.

Ok we will have to agree to disagree.
