The size and look of that thing is ridiculous.

My only consolation in being unable to secure a preorder is the remote chance a redesigned or alternate color version of the monstrosity is quickly released.

I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of complaints from casual enthusiasts about both consoles when people finally get them and realize they're too big to fit in many entertainment centers.

It looks like taking those plastic covers off is really easy, I hope that means they'll be selling different colors. It also means adding larger storage should be a fairly simple thing and if you want to go crazy and buy 2TB or larger expansion as long as it fits you can do that vs 1TB at a time for external plug and play on the Xbox Series family of consoles. I'm still doing a larger external HDD and swapping games, no way I'm spending hundreds of dollars for minimal storage upgrades, I just can't justify that or afford it.

I don't know how they won't fit if you lay them down, the Series X is a little taller when you lay them down but it still looks like it should fit fine in most entertainment centers plus the ventilation will be going out of the side so you won't be blocking anything. They had to go with these designs to cool the internals, there is no way around it really unless you want a gimped machine like a series S.

Actually, MS announced they are coming out with more sizes for their external storage as well as additional manufacturers. I will probably switch to the 2TB as soon as it's released.

I didn't try to preorder one, I did try to preorder the XSX and didn't get one. Neither one of them will fit easily on my current entertainment stand without removing 2 devices. At least the Xbox is slightly less ugly overall.

The official Playstation teardown vid, on Playstation's YT channel, already has over 4 million views.

would it fit with says heat sink?
No idea. I would buy anything until its okayed by Sony. That's a lot of money. I wouldn't buy one without a heat sink either as heat supposedly has an effect on speed consistency and longevity.

If its compatible, make sure you get the one with the heat sink

Yeah what could it hurt? better to have that extra protection and it's not like it adds that much to the cost.

Edit: This guy says don't get the one with the heatsink, probably best just to wait and see what guidance Sony offers.

PS5 Storage May Support Four Different M.2 NVMe SSDs Sizes Based on Hardware Breakdown

PS5-expandable-SSD-768x454.png

In the recent PS5 breakdown video, we see Yasuhiro Ootori, VP of the mechanical design department at Sony remove the cover for the storage expansion slot. not much else is elaborated other than this is where users can install a supported M.2 NVMe SSD drive. However, if you pay close attention to the shot you’ll notice that there are different screw holes with a numbers by each of them.

For those unaware, these represent the different length that a M.2 NVMe SSD can come in, though there are more depending on the type device.

M.2 Module Sizes
M.2 Cards and Motherboard slots vary in sizes, both in the width and length of the card. Compatibility will depend in part with a Motherboard’s ability to fit that specific card’s size, in the same way other PCIe devices do. The current available sizes for M.2 modules are as follow:
