Not the same. The Retail MSRP pricing for the PS5 options will be much more competitive and fierce since there are so many companies trying to fight for your business. Add to that, new SSDs coming out that will be faster and faster will push prices down even further. There's no competition for the proprietary options as far as I know. Is it still only Seagate making the proprietary options or did more get added now? I thought they were supposed to come out last year already?

The 1TB SSD for Series X is still $219 on amazon here in the US, the Western Digital 1TB SSD with heatsink is only $169.99 on amazon, it launched much higher that less than a year ago. The 2TB model which is the one I have cost me $477.30 back in July, now on Amazon it's down to $288.00 while the 2TB card for the Series X is $399 on Amazon and the MS store. Clearly Sony's approach was the better one, it takes less than 5 minutes to install, and you are done worrying about it while the Xbox expansion card takes a couple of seconds but costs a hell of a lot more and there is no competition to drive the price down. How many companies are going to try to make drives that only work on one product?

You're trying to get that point across to a guy who is spending his time doing Ms rewards to get free Gamepass. You would think someone as frugal as that would understand but the green goggles get in the way I suppose 😉

Does anyone find it odd that Jerry didn’t point out the the PS SSD isn’t portable? You can only have the one card installed. You can’t swap it out with another without formatting. You can’t have multiple plug and play cards and take them with you filled with games to friends and families. I wish Sony went with a portable format for my needs.

Lots of numbers there... So, pay $170 and have to tinker and exchange SSD, or pay a $220 and exchange in a second and use the internal SSD at the same time?
Lol do you think the little cheaper Homer Simpson alternative is better?

Wrong on all levels... you don't exchange anything. The SSD you install is an expansion, just like the Xbox. The PS5's internal SSD is soldered on, you can't remove it from the mobo. Guess what, you also don't get slower speeds with these expansions like the Xbox's option. So you are paying less for more with Sony's option in every single way. All it takes is a couple more minutes of your time.

Sounds like a hassle, I'm wishing you luck on your future endeavors of opening up your plastic toy and hope that you don't hurt yourself ❤️

It's not. Literally if you can put together tables and chairs from Ikea, this is easier than that, lol.

I'll be fine. I build my own PCs since mid 2000s.

Actually on PS5, you do. Some expansion drives are slower, some are the same, and some are faster. None are portable.

Actually you don't, at least not yet. No PS5 only games have utilized the full speeds yet, not even Rift Apart. That's why you don't see much of a difference in load speeds for slower than recommended SSDs installed in PS5s when compared to the stock and even faster SSDs. The performance has been the same. Maybe off by 0.x seconds.

According to DF, the slower speed drives do perform slower than the installed drive. So actually, you do.

According to this article, it does in some cases and some cases not. I've said all along, go with what Sony recommended: at least 5500mb/s read speeds and you will be fine. The sn850 and Samsung 980 pro that goes on sale often are faster than the stock SSD memory in the PS5, the former which Cerny recommends. I would listen to him as he is the architect.

So looks like we agree.

My mistake, Brian. I thought you quoted me saying the 980 pro and sn850 are slower.

The only ones that are slower are the ones lower than Sony's recommended 5500mb/s read. So just go for the SSDs that meet that and you will be fine.

Obviously if you put in a SSD slower than the one in the PS5, you may experience slightly slower times. That's just common sense.

So weird having my name said. Gave me tingles in my taint!

You use the internal one on the PS5 as well it's not removed or replaced, the expansion port is just that an expansion. Once inside it's the same thing as the series x, you choose which storage area you want the game put to, the internal drive, the expansion drive or a USB HDD. Do you still think you are replacing the internal PS5 drive with the expanded storage? that's not true at all.

It took me less than 5 minutes and I'm not a guy who tinkers around with tools all the time lol, anyone who thinks that it's actually difficult to do is either extremely lazy or just wants to have a bad faith discussion. Does it take a little longer than plugging a drive into the Series X port? sure, much longer? not really and once it's done it's done, you can get a 2TB SSD for the PS5 with the heatsink for only $69 more than the 1TB Series X expansion card.

I googled but I can’t find anything. Does this require a heat sink for the PS5? It’s only $179.00.
