But really, if they’re using less parts/resources, isn’t that saving them money?

In all your years as a gamer have you seen the world in the situation it's in right now? Have you seen parts shortages like we have now? labor shortages, global inflation and higher prices, droughts causing more expensive shipping because certain waterways can't be used and exchange rates being off the way they are in some parts of the world?

PS head J. Ryan put out a statement today crying about Call of Duty possibly not being on PS after MSFT acquires Activision/Blizzard. Wow, PS is pretty ok with exclusives if they are doing it but when they get shutout they b!tch, haha.

The story I just read talks about how MSFT offered Sony CoD for an additional 3 years after Sony's deal with Activision expires. Ryan says this is totally unacceptable and is actively trying to scuttle the MSFT purchase of Acti/Blizz.

I have a feeling that after this deals goes through Sony is going to regret being so public about their opposition to MSFT's purchase. MSFT should rescind their offer to Sony and tell them if they want CoD or any other games in their wheelhouse then they should allow GAMEPASS on PS and then all Sony gamers get access to all the games.

Ahhhh man, gaming is better then a soap opera. :laugh:

The only reason he went public with it was to try to stop the buyout from happening, this was more for regulators than it was for fans.

At the same time Spencer and other xbox execs saying they don't want to take COD away from PlayStation gamers was just proven to be a lie, if they said "well go 3 more years" that shows the plan is to stop at some point or they wouldn't have an "end date" so to speak.

Here's the thing, both companies secure exclusives and both are swallowing up developers to keep games exclusive to their platform. That's just the way things are right now. But for Ryan to start publicly crying about what both do reeks of desperation.

If what I read is true then J. Ryan is a little impulsive manchild. Ryan says he went public because Spencer made it public with the release of a statement that said MSFT is willing to leave CoD on PS for the next couple of years.

Spencer then reached out privately via email to Ryan to detail that Xbox will allow CoD to be on the PS platfcorm for 3 years after their deal with Activision expires. I think that was a nice committment especially when things can change so quickly as we have seen over these last few Pandemic years. It was this email that seems to have infuriataed Ryan and he went public with their private conversation like a little insecure punk.

I'm a multiplatform gamer so I'll be able to play these games regardless. But I hope this doesn't start a new gaming cold war between these 2 because Sony could easily lock out MSFT from something like Destiny. Hell, Sony locked out MSFT gamers with both Bethesda games Death Loop and Ghostwire Tokyo and yet here we are with Sony shedding tears for what they themselves also do.

Or they would just re-negotiate. Contracts typically establish a term of some sort, be it driven by an explicit duration or a "trigger" (end of services, etc.). That said, lets not kid ourselves that Phil is going to use it as leverage to get something from Sony if they want to extend it - whether that be GamePass on Playstation, an exchange for Sony classics to come to Xbox, etc. Ultimately, they don't want to take it away from Playstation gamers, but MS is definitely going to throw their weight around.

I would even go further to say that MS might "leak" this as public. The narrative will be that Sony only had to allow an optional service to be used on Playstation to keep COD, adding even more to what Playstation offers. Instead, they opted to lose COD and not have GP to keep a perceived market advantage. This is just conjecture from me, but many people thought this was MS' long game and I tend to agree.

This would be in line with the company’s usual strategy of making a FIFA bundle following the launch of the latest annual FIFA video game release. However, a notable inclusion in the upcoming iteration of this bundle will include not only the PS5 (in both Digital and Optical version) and FIFA 23, but also an additional DualSense controller as well. For those unaware, the Japanese tech giant usually launches its PS5 with just one controller.

But the new bundle will feature two controllers out of the box. This also makes a lot of sense considering FIFA is also a co-op title and is often enjoyed with friends on the same game console. As of right now, the exact pricing for the Sony PlayStation 5 FIFA 23 bundle is still unclear. Furthermore, its availability details is also at large and it is unknown if the brand will be launching the bundle in markets like India.

Based on the report, the new FIFA 23 bundle for the PS5 will likely launch sometime around the launch of the game itself, which is set to release on 30th September 2022

The new Oberon Plus brings practical benefits to the PS5 CFI-1202 models with its die shrink. Officially(opens in new tab), TSMC’s N6 “delivers 18% higher logic density over the N7 process,” as well as being fully design rule compatible with previously produced N7 chips for more straightforward migration. However, TSMC’s linked press release doesn’t mention some of the associated benefits of moving from N7 to N6; as well as the smaller die, a processor can see lower power consumption with better thermals. It is particularly true where the chip designer doesn’t re-spec other aspects of the chip, like its clock speed. This aspect of the CFI-1202 was part of the teardown video earlier in September. The revised PS5 reportedly used 10% less power for the same gaming experience in that video. We have also seen that the 2022 revision had more reductions in cooler system bulk and overall system weight bringing down Sony’s bill-of-materials (BOM).

Unlike many device makers who would have submitted a flurry of design improvements alongside the order for a new batch of N6 SoCs, the console industry is peculiar in that it might steer away from overt performance improvements within the same generation. So Sony was happy that the die shrink allowed it to reduce its BOM, as described above, and didn’t have any further ambitions for it. Indeed, the 10% power saving when gaming isn’t a benefit they will be advertising, but it is welcome nonetheless. Lastly, it is good to know that Sony PS5 consoles didn’t lose up to 600g of mass over the last two generations to any real detriment to the system (but some say the 2021 revision ran a little hotter than the original).

Lastly, Angstronomics also observes that the PS5 is the first of the big three current-gen consoles to get a 6nm chip and that Sony is getting nearly 50% more PS5 chips per wafer than Microsoft with its Xbox Series X processors. Even so, Sony, with its cheaper silicon bill and new lower BOM, recently pushed price hikes worldwide (except in the U.S.).

Sony annual gross profits for 2022 were down by a whopping 1.73%.

Time to raise the price of the PS5, despite the cost saving hardware revision! No one should defend this.
