This game makes a great first impression, really fun first level
Yeah, nice that you get a brief story recap of Psychonauts/Rhombus of Ruin, then right into a prolog level that recaps your skills pretty quickly. Very nicely done! This game feels like it's firing on all cylinders!

I just finished replaying all but the last level of Psychonauts tonight, then literally started playing 2 after dinner, so I'm recently familiar with the controls. This is (thankfully) much tighter, even though it kinda also feels the same. Really interesting, what they did there. Jumping feels the most different, as a sustained hold on the button now goes much farther than before. That's kinda messing with me, but I think it's from just playing the original on the same day.

Yeah, so I was going to be done with the original game 1st, but it didn't quite happen 😄, and I'm about to leave for vacation for almost 2 weeks, so I just had to start the new game first. I will probably just call it now that I'm at HQ, and maybe just try to finish the original before going away. I've waited 16 f-ing years, and now I'll be away on a cruise without access for a week (not complaining at all, just terrible timing), then another few days visiting a friend. I'll just suck it up...I guess. I've been kind of a big fan of the original for so many years now, so it's bittersweet. I am however, relieved that the game is as good as it seems to be, so far!

Got to download from Steam and play this on the 24th. Impressions so far, I'm loving it. It's such a great balance of offering new experiences while offering nostalgic moments and references. It's a love note to fans while also feeling modern and sleek. The art direction benefits from the visual upgrades offered by modern hardware, and the dialogue, storytelling, and animation all feel on point. One of the coolest things it's done so far is blend real cutscenes with gameplay. Feels really new and fresh. A game of the year contender in my eyes for sure.

First hour or so if anyone wants to check out the gameplay, more on the channel. Skip to 8:23 to get into it the actual game.

Games good, great even in regards to story and characters, but the gameplay... It's way too floaty imo. And having to switch out powers often is confusing (not sure how they'd solve this though).
The combat is the one thing that made me turn off last night, after the third attempt at cleansing the casino (outside the entree) area of baddies but failing cause the control and combat is so bland and hectic (that dodge move isn't implemented well at all) made me give up.

Are you serious? That's confusing to you? And the casino isn't even a hard section. Gamers give up too easy these days.

It's not bland, man. Get your your skills and lvl's up.

He did a hot take off a 30 second trailer?
It wasn't even that long and to even call it a snooze fest with little to no real look at it is a dumb remark. I never had interest in this dude, but looks like he's trying to be a Howard Stern. I guess he's being raw. I think I've said more about him then he's given the game :)

He’s still a thing?

Yeah, he’s not for me, maybe for kids that are seven, eight years old ;)

my guess he probably saw the trailer before and used it’s opening line as a “cruel irony” joke?

I'm in the exploring mood right now. The game definitely feels "bigger" than the original campgrounds, but they've packed in so much stuff to interact, collect, and discover.

Can I play this without playing the original? All the praise and great reviews has me interested.
Yes, they start with a skippable recap. However, the first one is good.

BTW, I forgot so much of the story, I've watched the recap and another with some actual cutscenes from the first.
