I have a 40GB PS3 and in the system info it says i have 25GB of the 37GB. I have removed every game and demo and i have no idea what is taking up this much storage. I skimmed through the savefiles and no way thats a total of 12GB. So i really don't get this.

I want to free up space so i can download Ni No Kuni, it's 21GB and i wonder...will this even work? Don't i need double the amount of space? I download the game and thats 21GB, but it also needs to be installed, doesn't it? Or will this work?

This will mean i can't buy Crysis 3 though and that sucks! I gotta know what is taking up the 12GB of space. Anyone?

I don't think that's you're problem, If I remember the problem is how Sony handles downloads and installs on PS3...

So if you need to DL a 10GB game you need 20GBs free. Basically X2 of whatever original space you need

Oh damn.....so its not going to work for Ni No Kuni then....unless 21GB is the full thing and doesn't need to be installed.

Oops @ the stupid typo in the thread title.

Sounds about right I think?

I think I remember my 60GB had 41-42GB / 55GB free to use when I first got it with nothing installed.

yeah the bigger the HD the less you have my 500 gig PS3 has like 400 and change. but ya should just upgrade the hard drive laptop drives are insanely cheap and that is all the PS3 hard drive is a 2.5" SATA hard drive. I put a 650 in my last slim 120 model took like 5 to 10 minutes (just transfer your saves to a flash drive before swapping drives).

Or for people who upgraded their PS4 HDD, maybe use that for the PS3?

I'm thinking of doing that right now since I just have the stock PS4 500GB lying on my table.

Those are some good ideas people. I will go look for one of those HDDs then. Be a shame to miss out on Ni No Kuni. I will be checking out Youtube to find out how to do this though.

It's pretty easy. Just follow the simple steps and you should be fine.

Yea kind of dumb how they do it needing double the space and what not. I'm playing Ni No Kuni right now and really enjoy it so definitely not one to miss. The downloads for that game are weird though as there were two parts to it, at least for me.

So I tried installing the 500GB HDD on my PS3 and I think my PS3 HDD tray is too old... the screws don't move when I try to unscrew the 4 screws holding the HDD in place. Instead, the crosshead part of the screw (the part where you actually screw the screw) is physically warped so that there isn't enough strength to move the actual screw.

Anyone know where I can get a PS3 HDD tray for an old phat 60GB for cheap?

It never made much sense to me how the PS3 handled storage. With all the installs and whatever it got ridiculous.

what I cannot understand is how you can install the data from a 360 game to a hard drive (disc still has to be in the console to verify the game) but the PS3 with all this almost unlimited hard drive space they do not have a similar feature?

I'm guessing the 12GB space is forced reserved space for games that have to install some data both PS4 and One do that same thing too.

I'd upgrade the HD. Just pay for the games for now upgrade your PS3 HD then install them later. Ipad also does the same thing you need x2 the space to install anything it's f***ing BS.

Was this issue fixed on PS4 or do you still need x2 for installs?

Yeah I always wondered why Sony never did game installs on PS3. Hell wish they would add it.

I have read the PS4 doesn't do this (2X space needed).

How the PS3 did installs and download space i always thought was odd, its another way the PS4 is just more user friendly to use than the PS3. I didn't run into PS3 HD space problems until i started to actually download many of the PS+ games. I ended up buying a 1 TB Hybrid HD in December for the PS4, and using the PS4 500 GB in my PS3 and now both have alot of space.

I am considering upgrading the DS4 battery as well, i have read you can use PS3 replacement batteries in it which would almost double the battery time if you get the 1800 mAh, you can get them for about $5.

I'll get a PS4 in the future and hope by then you can turn the damn light bar off. no idea why Sony even when they wanted the camera in every box did not allow it to be turned off. I'll guess they'll add that in a future version of the controller.
