Rage 2

Yeah, but... Avalanche's logo was on the gameplay trailer... How is that a leak?

Just an ongoing joke they've been doing for the past week or so, nothing serious.

Also, from yesterday, just posting late.

Gameplay looks really good, but I hope this isn't like Just Cause with 22-30fps.

They also did Mad Max, and it didn't have JC3's performance issues.

I hope its more like Mad Max then. This game seems to have a lot more action though and the framerate in that gameplay looks suspect. Its still WIP though.

So is this a single player game, MP or both? the trailer looked very impressive but there were so many things going on in spots it could easily be an MP game as well.

Rage 2 runs on Apex engine.

Confirmed to be set 50 years after Rage 1. You play as Walker. Three new Bandits confirmed. Goons, Riverhogs and another.

I have mad max on my PS4, it was a PS+ free game not too long ago, I guess I should give it a try lol.
Yes you should. It's really impressive how they can make so many interesting types of desert.

It has some of the best smoke and atmospherics in the business, and there is a nice grounded physicality that I really like. The car combat is a blast as well. It can get a tad grindy if you want, but I loved the game.

What’s the apex engine? Any other big games using it? I don’t recognize the name.

You guys should play Mad Max,it's pretty good...those sandstorms,damn...

Just Cause 3 and Mad Max ran on the Apex engine, I believe. JC3 had framerate issues because the high level physics in that game. Mad Max ran fine and still had a very physics-based world, though not nearly as destructible as JC3.

I hope they find a happy medium. At the least, I doubt they will have to render the kinds of loads JC had because of all the flying and destruction.

The engine handles PBR very well, and the lighting is very natural. It's a great, proven open world engine, especially since Rage 2 looks like it could be a sequel to Mad Max.

Who knows what kind of improvements in optimization we will see due to the collaboration with Id. I'm excited.

Looking forward to it. Rage was a good game. I remember it was lauded for its graphics back in the day but any time you can get a Doom like over the top game i'm there.

Ok, yeah, I played Mad Max and quite enjoyed it. Its the only game by them that i've liked. Good news so.

Highlights:
  • The game is 30 FPS on XB1 and PS4 and 60 FPS on XBX and PS4 Pro. PC can be whatever.
  • Rage 2 runs on Avalanche's Apex engine.
  • Avalanche is also the main developer on the game with id giving advise and guidance.
  • Rage 2 is currently singleplayer only. I say currently as there's a bunch of "for now" type language here followed up with immediate assertions of a bunch of post launch and live service type updates to keep bringing people back. (Also take a look at recent Prey and Wolfenstein announcements for examples of what Bethesda's been doing post launch.)
  • The reason Rage 2 is singleplayer only is that the game is very large and it's the first id type game Avalanche is making, so they thought it made sense to focus on the campaign.
  • Avalanche states that the game has hundreds of hours of content.
  • id stated that they will be talking about whether your character's gender is selectable in the future (which, uh, presumably means yes?). The character is also fully voiced.
  • id notes that there is a lot of skin customization for weapons and vehicles, and that they're still figuring out how you will acquire those. (They were asked if it was lootboxes or crafting.)
  • Crafting does return in general though.
  • The first game's protagonist will not be back.
  • id also notes that there are some social community elements at launch even though there isn't multiplayer.
  • id notes that extending the life of their games with post launch services is something they're looking at more generally too (like, perhaps, a game called Doom "Eternal".)Most other things Avalanche and id talked about were stuff that was apparent from the Bethesda conference video.

Don't have enough experience with the Avalanche engine, but as a huge fan of the id Tech engine it's kind of disappointing it won't be based on that.

I'm finally back home, so I have a bit more time to write up E3 impressions.

E3 opened at 2:00 for the non-industry people, and by 2:30 I was at the Rage 2 booth (which was pretty awesome BTW. They had several people dressed up just like in the trailer, and a beat up old ice cream truck.....from which they actually gave us ice cream as we waited!). I was excited because the line was short, but when I got to the entrance I was told the earliest playtime open was 5:45. No sh*t. This is why I'd tell anyone going to E3 in the future to book playtimes ahead if possible.

Fast forward, and I finally get in. They had a little theater set up before the playtesting area, so about 15 of us sat and watched a preview (different than anything I'd seen before), while we waited and ate ice cream. A bunch of devs were walking around, and I was able to talk to a few of them. All very cool people! They were very adamant about no PvP or co-op, because they said it took too much time and resources, and they wanted to get the SP just right.

Everyone went into the play area, and I was last because I was chatting with a cool female dev. No kiosks left. I stood there for awhile and talked to another dev for a bit while I was watching everyone play. Eventually someone left, so I went through the tutorial and finally started playing the demo level. I loved what I played, but after less than 10 minutes, they stopped all of us to let the next group in. I was like 'I just started!' and the guy goes 'yeah sorry, but you all have to leave." ARGGGGGHHHHHHHHH.

If you played the first one, it feels similar, but there is just a lot more you can do. Your character has several extra abilities, like a 'ground pound' and something like short-term steroids where you move really fast. The play control was very precise, and the gunplay felt great.

It was basically like Doom on steroids meets Mad Max.
