Flaws and all, I'm still having fun with the game (Gamepass ftw!). Playing with a buddy sailing the seas is as good as it gets. We wasted about 3 hours just doing random sh*t and even getting robbed was fun. These f*cks sunk our ship at a fort raid and I snuck on their ship pulled up anchor and killed one of their guys. We stole their ship but they respawned on it and killed us. Meanwhile, our 3rd man had snuck and hid on the fort and got 2 chests...we sailed back after dying and chased them off and redeemed both chests for about $1500 gold. Not a huge haul but damn it was fun...the previous few hours we had been robbed and spawn killed by another crew which was both fun and not.

I think the game is fun playing once or twice a week. I played Destiny 2 similarly...didn't really want to play every day. I wish there was more stuff to find while exploring the islands tho. I have found random chests/messages in a bottle with map, etc. but not enough of that. Finding a map in a bottle with X marks the spot(s) and going to get that treasure is really fun. I do think the game would have been great with a story mode attached like Destiny. Having pvp in the primary/only mode is both a blessing and a curse....there is no other mode to go to if you are bored (i.e. pvp vs. pve). Another thing that would have been cool is mini games (the only thing good about the shared area in Cod:WWII)....card games, bowling with coconuts, basketball with coconuts (anything with coconuts is cool). I think outposts should have been "safe zones"...i.e. once you are at an outpost, no pvp allowed.

I'm interested to see what the next content is going to be and if it will really expand on what we have now. Also, since this isn't solely a pve game, not sure what they can release that will keep people coming back? This game is largely a "make your own story" game so they just need to add more stuff to do if they can. Would be cool if they could add pve raid zones where you all fight some giant sea monsters and/or some other AI events (pirate fleets, larger forts/islands, etc). They should have brought me on as a designer...I have lots of ideas :). The idea has huge potential...just not sure if Rare really tapped it.

Good assessment. I have said similar things about safe zones and mini-games... Maybe they could make an exclusive safe island and keep the same model. Although, I do think that they should have started you out in the tavern not partied up, but in a crowd. From there, you could go do your shopping alone or just look for a crew in the bar. It would really be cool if you could party-up with people you meet or with someone you have maybe just played cards with, etc.

Speaking of, the crew/party system really needs to be more dynamic for this type of game. It's not cool that I can't go on missions alone, then invite a friend to the sloop. As it is, if I'm in the middle of a mission and I see a friend pop up online, I have to either tell that friend to wait until I'm done with my mission and cashed in, or quit my game entirely. I usually like to do the animal missions alone, but I would invite a single friend. It's the same size ship, so why not?

Updates/Balance
  • Message from Beyond - A message from the Ferryman has been nailed to the door post on the Ferry of the Damned instructing players on how to scuttle their ship. This is a reminder to players that if their ship and / or crew is in a position they want to get out of, simply going to "My Crew" in the settings page and voting to "Scuttle Ship" will sink the ship and start the crew in a new location.
  • Weapon Balancing - Reduced Blunderbuss Damage and Increased Eye of Reach damage. We've been reviewing the data on players weapon choices and damage dealt across our weapons and made some balancing changes. We will continue to monitor this change and further tweak as needed.
  • [PC Only] Aim Down Sights Sensitivity - We've increased the default mouse sensitivity to allow for more efficient aiming and to be in parity with the controller, as we heard your feedback regarding how mouse-mats around the world were being worn out due to how painfully slow it was to aim down the sights. We are also currently working on further improvements for a future update which will include an ADS slider in the Settings to allow players to choose a sensitivity they feel comfortable with.
  • [PC Only] Mouse Binds - We've added mouse scroll up and down to the list of controls players can use to rebind actions to.
Fixed Issues
  • Enabling 'non-directional' chat no longer allows non-crew players to be heard anywhere in the world.
  • Players should no longer get into a state where they can no longer equip a second weapon.
  • We have corrected an issue with players receiving very little warning of a server shutdown. Players should now receive a minimum warning of 30 minutes for a server shut down.
  • We are still working to ensure that server shutdowns are something that a player would only experience during scheduled maintenance. In the meantime we aim to give players more opportunity to react to a shutdown should it occur.
Performance Improvements
  • In response to reports of poor ping times in South America, we have now deployed Sea Of Thieves to a South American data centre.
  • Multiple server and client crash fixes.
  • Further improvements and optimisations for all platforms are ongoing.
Known Issues
  • Trading Companies now have limited voyage stock that refreshes at 6am every day (in-game time). This limited voyage stock is currently not explained during purchasing.
  • Some players cannot see their downloadable content in game.
  • Once you redeem your code, here is a Support Article that shows you where to find your items in game. If you still cannot find your items in game, please raise a support ticket to log this issue.
  • Players may experience details of their pirate (such as hair colour / scars) looking different from their initial selection.
  • We are still working on a fix for this. This was discussed in our Launch Update article written by Executive Producer, Joe Neate.
  • Bounty quest skeleton waves sometimes spawn in the ground or cannot be found at all.
  • Improvements to spawning have been made in this update, and we are working to resolve the issue for all islands. For a potential work around, please read this Support article.
  • Pirates can be migrated to another server after completing a Skeleton Fort, and sailing away with the Vault Key. After migration, they will find that the vault is empty upon their return.
  • We are working on a fix. A short term solution is to not sail away from the Skeleton Fort when you have the Vault Key.
  • [PC] Push to talk option will reset to default (disabled) between sessions.
  • Message from Beyond on the Ghost Ship isn't translated to other languages.

I don't think Rare gets it.

At the end of the day all of this is STILL leading to getting gold to buy useless cosmetic items.

Well, I have to say I'm actually encouraged by the video. They talked about several things I did above (i.e. collaboration events with other crews, more to "find" during exploring and generally just more stuff to do). While I wish the "loot" wasn't just gold/map to go get gold, hopefully, they can add more incentive to get loot. So 6 total major content drops this year and hopefully weekly/daily events. I think it's a start....we'll have to see if it actually keeps folks attention.

Official Sea of Thieves Content Plans

It's been just over three weeks since we launched Sea of Thieves, and a lot has happened since then! We've been listening to you all, and we know you are keen to hear how we plan to grow Sea of Thieves. As we've always said, launch is just the start, and we are going to grow and evolve the game with feedback from our community. It feels like the right time to reveal how we'll do this.

Sea of Thieves is a unique experience. As we look to add to the game, we will be very purposeful about the type of experience we want to create, and how we want this game to grow. At the same time, we have also been listening closely to everyone playing the game since launch and have been ensuring that this feeds into our content plans. When considering what to add to our plans, we always consider how we can make the most impact on the following:
  • Bringing players together in interesting ways, encouraging different types of player encounters
  • Enriching the world that players adventure in
  • Giving players new ways to play
  • Giving players a variety of goals and rewards
  • Broadening the journey to Pirate Legend and beyond

Alongside this, what's key for us is the rhythm and cadence we want to get into with Sea of Thieves. Our focus for April is to continue addressing the top feedback points, but as we move into May, our focus will shift to new content.

Our first content update, The Hungering Deep, will release in May and bring with it a new AI threat to the world. Crews will have to work together to discover and defeat this threat as part of a unique event. We will also be introducing a number of new mechanics to assist players on this adventure, and there will be unique rewards that players can earn as part of this event. Beyond this, we will begin our weekly events programme during May, where we introduce new mechanics and give players fun new ways to play with weekly events and rewards.

In the summer months, we'll debut two more content updates with Cursed Sails, which will include a new ship type, and Forsaken Shores, which will introduce players to a perilous new part of the world to explore. Similarly to The Hungering Deep, both of these updates will also include new gameplay mechanics for players, new AI threats to challenge and new unique rewards to claim.

As we've always said, we never wanted to do anything to separate our players, so we're pleased to confirm that all content updates will be available to all our players, at no additional cost.
With Sea of Thieves being a game that grows and evolves, we'll be listening to you, our community, throughout. As such, we'll always be looking at whether our current plans are meeting your needs. Based on feedback since launch, we have changed the priorities for both Pets and Ship Captaincy which we had previously announced as things we would look to add in the few months after launch. These are on the back burner for now whilst we add to the game in other areas. Expect our plans to continue to be fluid, but always with the goals listed above as our guiding principles.

We are hugely excited to be beginning this phase of Sea of Thieves, and seeing where the adventure takes us.

Cheers,

– Joe Neate, Executive Producer

So how are they going get crews working together when basically everyone kills each other all the time? The PvP encounters are all that’s holding the game together at the moment and now they want try to change that? Adding new AI is cool but if it can only be beaten by multiple crews working together I think it’s going to dead on arrival.

Instancies, like you find in MMOs. For example: The Kraken appears in sea and crews must take it down together. Completion gives gold and unique rewards.

No idea if that is what they have done.

Must say that these "content drops" sound very small. I mean, only 1 new ship, really? Or 1 new AI antagonist. Simply doesn't sound like enough.

What if they implemented a way to ask a nearby crew to vote on joining you? Doing such could make enemies invulnerable to attack (just like your own crew members)

It would have to be something like that.

Logged on yesterday and got nine achievements. So that part seems to be working now anyway.

It sounds bad. No where near enough content.

The new A.I theat sounds like it will be mostly meaningless after the timed event, same for the "working together" mechanics.

No real confirmation on "rewards" being more meaningfull than cosmetic, but they likely aren't.

Weekly events sound like they are going to be mostly more of the same fetch treasuse quests.

Customisation Variety
  • Regional Stock - Shopkeepers in different regions now only stock certain item sets, due to some mistimed deliveries.
  • Strike a Pose - We’ve expanded our clothing range to include the Executive Admiral, Grand Admiral, Rotten Bilge Rat, Castaway Bilge Rat, Corsair Sea Dog, Ruffian Sea Dog and Imperial Sovereign sets.
  • Ship Shape - Multiple sets of ship cosmetics have been added to the shipwright stock. Now you can purchase and equip Grand Admiral, Castaway Bilge Rat, Ruffian Sea Dog and Imperial Sovereign ship customisation sets.

Updates
  • Tutorial Invulnerability - Players are no longer invulnerable during parts of the Tutorial when first launching the game.
This should resolve confusion around players seemingly being invulnerable at outposts. We take all reports very seriously, so please log a Support Ticket and we will investigate further.
  • Skeletons Accuracy - When shooting cannons from islands at long distances, Skeleton accuracy has been reduced. We read your feedback that it was a little extreme... #SkellyOP!
  • Merchant Voyages - It is no longer possible to force Merchant voyages to request delivery to a specific outpost. Now you'll have to earn your cheddar.

Fixed Issues
  • [PC Only] Rebinding to the F key will no longer soft lock the radial.
This has been a top reported issue to Support, and we believe this is now resolved. If you are still encountering issues with this rebind locking the screen, please log a Support Ticket and we will investigate further.
  • Stow and Disengage can now be rebound to the same button on a controller
  • Incorrect company icons will no longer be displayed for a split second if trying to get reputation from two different Trading Companies.

Summary:

Official Sea of Thieves Developer Update: May 1st 2018

-Weekly updates have started more focusing on adding features and cosmetics. Instead of bugs etc.

-Content teams are split in three seperate teams. One team working on Hungering Deep, other team on Cursed Sails, last one on Forsaken shores. Teams work also on the weekly events during "their" DLC release.

-Hungering Deep is a "medium size" content update. Other ones are abit bigger because of more time

-When Hungering Deep team is done when the next DLC hits they move to the back of the queue to the DLC after Forsaken Shores.

-Private crews update hopefully in next week patch

-Handing resources to each other coming

The game has design flaws and I'm not sure if that can be fixed with content updates.

Instead of SoT we should call it DoA.

We'll see how it all plays out though. No Man's Sky is supposedly a great game now and i haven't played it since launch so anything's possible.

I've been away from this for awhile and decided to play this again. I actually had a great time playing it.

That’s the thing with this game. It’s super enjoyable to play. It just there is no player content outside of the make your own adventure mechanic which is sad.

Just started this morning, playing solo...how do you track the first few proposed voyages, tutorial flashed quickly on the screen about laying the map on the captain's desk...? I dont see it,I see the big map on a table below deck but I can only mark stuff on that...maybe its because I took a sloop...? getting on in 15 minutes if anyone wants to join and dont mind a french accent lol...

Gamertag is Ricker by the way lol...add me as a friend, will be interested in playing some SoD 2 with you guys as well.

Ok someone helped me understand the basic stuff,he had no mic though but I got most of it.

Union doesnt have a Club set up on the XBox...?
