Patch Notes
Ahoy pirates!
We hope you've all thoroughly enjoyed the festive season! Now that it's come to a close, Outpost residents across the Sea of Thieves are taking down their decorations for the year.
If you haven't used your Gilded Voyage yet, fear not! You can hold on to it and use it at any time. Duke has now run out and is no longer offering these Voyages, though he continues to offer Letters of Recommendation and bags of gold for purchase with Doubloons. In the meantime, we've fixed a number of issues reported by the community and made further improvements to loading times. Happy New Year!
Updates
  • Loading Times – Further improvements to loading times should be noticeable with the release of 1.4.2.
  • Scalable Text Chat - Text chat can now be scaled via the settings menu.
Fixed Issues
  • Cannon radial no longer sticks on a player's screen if they are knocked away from a cannon.
  • The lowest LOD texture on the galleon ladder has been updated.
  • Players on the Ferry of the Damned will now be credited for Krakens killed by their crew.
  • Players no longer get teleported to the middle of the map while on a Rowboat during server migration.
  • Players should no longer intermittently fall off ship ladders when reaching the top.
  • Rewards in Kraken Watchtower Vault have been rearranged so they can all be picked up.
  • Migrating with an in-progress ‘X marks the spot’ map no longer puts treasure back in the dig spots.
Known Issues
  • Some players on an Nvidia GPU might be experiencing rendering-related problems. While the team continue to investigate the issue further, a workaround has been found. Please follow these steps in order to mitigate your issue.

This game seems to seeing quite a bit of a resurgence on Twitch right now. Kind of wild tbh.

Sea of Thieves draws Twitch’s top streamers, and every sales and player metric is on the rise

Sea of Thieves has had a resurgence in the past couple of months, kicked off by the one-two punch of the Shrouded Spoils update and popular streams from Summit1g. Now more of Twitch’s biggest names are setting sail – including Ninja and DrDisRespect – and Rare says all this interest has given the studio a very happy new year.

“Pretty much everything” has taken an uptick, according to executive producer Joe Neate in the latest developer update video, “whether that’s monthly active users, or it’s the streaming numbers, or even just our sales and our Game Pass. We’re seeing really great growth across all of these areas.”

Exactly how long this momentum lasts remains to be seen, and we don’t have the benefit of specific player counts since Sea of Thieves runs on Microsoft’s closed platform. The one thing we can see is Twitch numbers, and those have been big. Varied tracking sites from TwitchMetrics to SullyGnome show Sea of Thieves just outside of the top 10 for January’s most viewed games by hour count, encompassing 14 million total hours viewed.

That number is dwarfed by the likes of League of Legends and Fortnite, but compares favourably against Black Ops 4, FIFA 19, GTA5, and even Overwatch. For a time, Summit1g had the highest subscriber count on Twitch after he started streaming Sea of Thieves, and the popularity has been enough to bring in Ninja and DrDisRespect for at least a few days in the past week.

Game was still in top 10 on twitch this weekend when I was on.
